Abstract

This study explores the philosophical depth embedded in “Syair Surat Kapal,” a cultural artifact from Riau, Indonesia, celebrated for its enchanting poetry and melodious rhythm. The research employs a qualitative methodology within the framework of cultural studies to investigate the philosophy of Islamic Da’wah embodied in the manuscript. The objective of the study is to examine the impact of Islam on “Surat Kapal,” particularly within the context of the oral tradition of the Malay community in Rengat. It traces the influence of Islamic teachings on this community’s oral heritage. This study employs literature review and interviews with seven informants from Riau. The findings of this study underscore the significant role of “Surat Kapal” in shaping the Islamic identity within the community. The underlying philosophy of “Syair Surat Kapal” as a medium for Islamic da’wah is anchored in the belief that literature and poetry are potent mediums for disseminating religious teachings and fostering moral values. The vivid imagery and compelling narrative of the poem in the manuscript not only captivate the audience but also impart significant lessons about faith and belief in God. Consequently, “Syair Surat Kapal” exemplifies the power of literature in religious and cultural propagation within an academic context.

Abstract

Forest fragmentation has resulted in decreased wildlife habitat, which has triggered conflicts with humans due to the use of the same plants. This has been particularly contentious with the tapanuli orangutan. Research of the tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) habitat is very limited. The aims of this research is to examine the latest habitat conditions, such as land cover, composition of vegetation, feed plant, and habitat carrying capacity to provide recommendations for habitat management in developing a mitigation policy of the human-tapanuli orangutan conflict. The research location is focused on the area of human-orangutan conflict in the Batang Toru Landscape in South Tapanuli Regency, which took place from August to December 2019. Vegetation analysis was conducted using the strip transect method with a total of 294 plots (11.76 ha). The number of species at the pole and tree levels were high with 149 species (46 families) and diversity index (H') > 3. Eighty feed plant species were found and expected to support the growth of the orangutan population of 247 individuals. The density and diversity of cultivated plant species in the buffer zone were high and consumption by orangutans resulted in human-tapanuli orangutan conflict, especially on durian (Durio zibethinus Murray). Conflict with humans will cause stress and disruption to the growth of the tapanuli orangutan. We recommend habitat management to mitigate conflict through patrols for monitoring habitat destruction in conservation forests, enrichment of feed plants in Forest Management Units, cultivation of orangutan non-food crops on community lands, and building a corridor with orangutan food crops with fruits that are not utilized by humans.

Abstract

The objectives of this research include exploring the potential of local culinary as a tourist attraction in four Destination Tourist Objects (ODTW), namely Haranggaol, BIS, Sibaganding, and Parapat in Simalungun Regency, Indonesia. The interconnection between food and tourism is currently growing. This research is an ethnographic study to support the acceleration of culinary tourism development in Simalungun Regency. Data were collected through observation and ethnographic interviews with 3 informants, namely key informants, main informants, and supporting informants. Using selective observation and contrasting questions, several contrasting dimensions among the residents of a domain can be identified (for example, we will know that the main foods are "dayok nabinatur" and "saksang," while desserts are found in "lapet boras" and "marlakop-lakop," and perhaps many more contrasts between main dishes and desserts). Such contrasting issues are the focus of componential analysis. Categorization of culinary based on local wisdom can be seen from the following elements: 1) culinary naming in Batak language; 2) cultural themes behind culinary presentation; 3) basic food ingredients; 4) local spices/herbs; and 5) the cooking process of local culinary. The potential of local culinary wisdom and culinary tourism based on local wisdom is worthy of development into a new tourist attraction, namely culinary tourism, to attract tourists.
