Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the practice of Petang Megang tradition on indigenous Muslim Malay people in Pekanbaru Riau in welcoming the holy month of Ramadhan, and to investigate the influence of Hinduism on this annual tradition. Petang Megang ritual does not only function as a passed-on tradition, but also reflects the acculturation of Hindu and Islam, social interaction, and community culture. This research is a descriptive study, in which data obtained are presented, analyzed, and explained. This study found that Petang Megang tradition reflects a strong relationship between the two beliefs, Hindu and Islam. The relationship can be seen in the similar concepts of purification in Petang Megang which is similar to tirtayatra in Hindu and wudhu (ablution) in Islam. Despite bringing similarity to Hindu tradition, Petang Megang serves as a medium of Islamic dawah (propagation) where it introduces a cultural practice in its relation to religious event (Ramadan). This study suggests that Petang Megang is a symbol of longstanding harmonious co-existence between Hindu and Islam in the region.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this writing is to promote the commandment of loving others as the theological foundation underlying the praxis of religious moderation. The method used is library research, with a descriptive analysis approach to various reference sources. This research resulted in findings on the importance of living the commandment “love your neighbor as yourself” and making it a lifestyle or lifestyle (daily action). This study confirms that the implementation of religious moderation can begin with a correct theological understanding of moderation, because a correct understanding of the theological basis of religious moderation will encourage moderate behavior. Christianity teaches the law of love which emphasizes the balance of people’s relationships with God and others. Loving God is proven by loving other to the same standard as loving himself. This balance is the basic principle of religious moderation. The teaching of love is also emphasized in the golden rules of love with the principle of solidarity.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the language attitudes of SMP Hikmatul Fadhillah (Hikmatul Fadhillah Junior High School) Medan students towards English based on attitude components. Data was taken from students of grade VIII, with 28 students selected from four different classes and seven randomly chosen from each class using random sampling techniques. The selection process involved teachers as informants based on students' relatively better English proficiency, identified through classroom observations. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through observation and interviews based on techniques proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The results show that students generally exhibit positive attitudes toward English. Cognitively, they recognize its importance for future opportunities such as education, career, and global access to information. Effectively, they view English proficiency as a source of pride, and conatively, they show a strong desire to improve and frequently use English, supported by school regulations. However, despite these positive tendencies, some students experience negative feelings, including pressure and low self-confidence, particularly when facing challenges with English grammar. These mixed responses highlight the complexity of student attitudes toward English learning.

Abstract

The integration of local wisdom in education is a crucial effort in the development of contextual learning in Indonesia, particularly in preserving and actualizing cultural values such as those of the Batak Toba community. This study aims to examine how the values of Batak Toba local wisdom can be integrated into contextual learning in schools. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review, this research involved a thematic analysis of scientific sources—including journals, academic books, and relevant research reports—published over the last two decades. The inclusion criteria focused on literature discussing local wisdom, character education, and curriculum development in the Indonesian context. The findings reveal that Batak Toba local wisdom contains rich educational values such as dalihan na tolu, mutual respect, communal harmony, and spiritual beliefs that can enrich classroom instruction, foster character development, support the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka, and enhance students’ cultural literacy. These values, when integrated into learning, not only make education more meaningful and rooted in students’ realities but also strengthen national identity in a multicultural society. The study concludes that integrating Batak Toba local wisdom into school-based learning is an urgent and strategic step to ensure that education in Indonesia remains culturally grounded, ethically formative, and responsive to the needs of future generations. This research contributes to the discourse on culturally relevant pedagogy and opens new pathways for designing educational models that harmonize local heritage with national educational goals.
