Abstract

Rice husk is an agricultural waste abundant in silica (SiO₂). SiO2 extracted from rice husk has a porous structure, so it has the potential to be used as an adsorbent material. To increase the stability and effectiveness of the adsorption process, SiO2 was modified by adding Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and used to removal Congo red dye. SiO₂ extraction was carried out through a calcination process at three different temperatures, namely 600, 700, and 800 °C. Morphological analysis and elemental composition using SEM-EDX showed the presence of a polymer layer on the surface of the material, which functions as a distribution medium for SiO₂ particles. In addition, an increase in carbon (C) content was detected after the addition of PVA, confirming the presence of PVA in the composite. The optimum conditions for the adsorption process of Congo red dye by SiO₂-PVA were obtained at pH 1, contact time 75 minutes, and solution concentration 75 mg/L. Experimental data showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was most suitable for describing adsorption behavior compared to the Freundlich model, with an adsorption capacity of 14.31 mg/g. These results indicate that SiO₂-PVA has the potential as an alternative adsorbent for the treatment of waste containing dyes.

Abstract

This research examines the form, function and meaning of ritual language in the Toba Batak community in Toba Samosir Regency through an anthropolinguistic approach. Ritual language is an important tool in traditional ceremonies which not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a medium for transmitting cultural values, social systems and ethnic identity. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods with participatory observation techniques, and analysis of traditional speech texts such as umpasa, mangupa prayers, and kinship greetings. The results of the research show that the Toba Batak ritual language reflects the dalihan natolu social system which emphasizes balanced social relations, respect for ancestors and clan solidarity. Traditional speeches such as umpasa contain moral values such as honesty, sincerity, hard work and mutual cooperation. Even though modernization has brought changes in the context of ritual language use, the Toba Batak community still maintains core values through adapting forms and media. Thus, the Toba Batak traditional language functions as a living and dynamic cultural structure, representing a close relationship between language, culture and ethnic identity.

Abstract

This study analyzes the linguistic landscape of the Sisingamangaraja Palace area in Humbang Hasundutan Regency as a representation of cultural identity, language ideology, and strategies for preserving cultural heritage in public space. The study is grounded in Landry and Bourhis’s linguistic landscape theory and Stuart Hall’s perspective of cultural representation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through visual observation, photographic documentation, and interviews with key informants. Data were interpretively analyzed to examine the use of Indonesian, Batak Toba language, English, and Batak script across various visual media. The findings indicate that the linguistic landscape functions not only informationally but also symbolically, representing historical legitimacy, cultural authority, and spirituality, while serving as a site of negotiation between locality, nationality, and globality in strengthening the collective memory of the Batak community.

Abstract

Abstract
