Abstract

Abstract

Mangrove forests serve as a natural barrier against storm surges, tsunamis and coastal erosion. Their complex root systems dissipate wave energy, protecting coastal areas from the effects of severe weather. This article serves to evaluate the tourism potential of the Lubuk Kertang mangrove area, highlight its ecological and community significance, identify challenges, and propose sustainable management strategies to enhance ecotourism opportunities. Mangrove observation using the transectional square methodology was used to assess mangrove density. It involves establishing transect squares consisting of 20 units, each measuring 10 x 10 meters, starting from the coastal area and extending inland. The study found that the mangrove area consisted mainly of Avicennia marina species, with a density of 1860 individuals per hectare (18.6 individuals per 100 m²). The tourism suitability index results for the Lubuk Kertang mangrove forest area were very high at 87.5%, categorizing it as “very suitable” for ecotourism development. This indicates a strong potential to attract tourists and promote sustainable tourism practices in the region

Abstract

Mangrove forests are important ecosystems, providing various ecological, economic, and social benefits. They serve as habitats for a wide range of species, act as natural barriers against coastal erosion, and play a key role in carbon sequestration, which helps to reduce the impacts of climate change. This study used surveys to tree biomass growth and quantify the carbon stocks trapped in this ecosystem. The methodology applied in measuring carbon in mangrove forests is similar to that used in primary forests, although some unique aspects need to be considered, such as the accumulation of non-biodegradable debris. Aspects that need to be considered, such as litter accumulation cannot be included in technical carbon calculations. included in technical carbon calculations. The condition of mangrove forests in North Sumatra shows a significant decline, with a 61.21% significant decline, with a in primary mangrove area between 1990 to 2015, mainly due to land conversion for aquaculture and agriculture. Carbon sequestration in mangrove forests is crucial to mitigating climate change, with their capacity to store carbon in biomass and sediment. Rehabilitation efforts, such as propagation planting and seedlings, showed expected survival rates and large carbon storage potential, with total carbon stocks reaching 558.07 mgC ha-1. It is important to understand carbon storage dynamics and influencing factors, such as duration and nutrient inputs, for effective management and conservation strategies

Abstract

Abstract

The production of high quality seedlings is dependent on soil as planting media. Application of biochar derived from oil palm trunk onto oil palm seedling  has been scarcely studied, especially on ultisol planting media. This research investigated the effect of oil palm trunk biochar on vegetative growth and nutrient uptake of belowground and aboveground tissues of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) in ultisol pre-nursery planting media. Three types of oil palm trunk biochar derived from top, middle, and bottom section were used in this research. The application rates were 1, 2, 3 and, 4 % (w/w) during 12 weeks in  a green house. This experiment used a non factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The addition of biochars derived oil palm trunk (OPT) amendment significantly increased stem diameter, plant height, root biomass, shoot biomass. The highest respon rasio (RRs) for root and shoot biomass was 0.40, and 0.55, respectively, recorded at 2% application rates. The highest increase of N, P, and K uptake for belowground and aboveground tissues were resulted from B3 (3 % biochar top section), B2 (2 % biochar top section), and B2 (2 % biochar top section) treatments, respectively. Overall, the addition of biochar derived top section OPT at 2 % (w/w) could enhance stem diameter, RRs plant biomass, N, P, K uptake of belowground and aboveground tissues. The addition of biochar OPT at 2 % (w/w) should be recommendation in order to used as rate of biochar OPT for ultisols ammendment in oil palm pre-nursery

Abstract

This study aims to examine the response of the growth and production of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) to the combination of fertilizer application, goat manure, manure and bioska extract. The study used a factorial Group Random Design (RAK) with two factors, namely the dose of goat dung compost (0, 2, and 4 tons/ha) and the concentration of bioska extract (0%, 1%, and 2%). The results of the study showed that the combination of applying compost, goat manure and bioska extract had a significant influence on the vegetative growth and components of peanut crops. The combination of 4 tons/ha goat dung compost and 2% bioska extract gives the best results, increasing plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, number of pods, number of seeds, seed weight, harvest index, and total biomass weight. This increase is thought to be due to increased soil fertility, growth stimulation by cinema, and the synergistic effects of a combination of the two. Analysis of soil and plant nutrients showed an increase in the availability and uptake of nutrients, as well as an increase in the chlorophyll content of the leaves.
