Abstract

This study aims to assess determinants of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) owners’ compliance behavior in paying zakat (alms). In addition, the sample population comprised 176 SMEs owners in Mataram City who served as participants. Data were collected through online survey instruments using the purposive sampling method. The testing technique and data analysis were carried out using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results showed that zakat literacy, Islamic egalitarianism, and moral norms influenced intention of SMEs owners to pay zakat, while intention affected compliance behavior. This study was essential for zakat institutions to develop new strategies to facilitate compliance behavior, considering the great potential in Indonesia. In addition, the fair and equitable distribution of zakat funds to asnaf (noun group of people worthy of receiving Muslim tithe) was expected to encourage SMEs owners to fulfill their obligation through zakat institutions by increasing the level of trust.

Abstract

Halal certification, a crucial aspect of the halal product industry in Indonesia, is mandatory for food and beverage products. However, awareness and understanding of halal certification remain low among Handicraft MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises). This research explores the perceptions, understanding, awareness, and challenges Handicraft MSMEs face regarding halal certification. A qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews was employed as the data collection method, followed by NVivo software analysis. The results indicate that Handicraft MSMEs lack an understanding of the importance of halal certification and are unaware of the obligations and procedures involved. We identified insufficient socialization as a significant obstacle, underscoring the urgent need for more awareness campaigns and educational programs. The complexity of the certification process and lack of coordination among halal institutions are also significant obstacles. This research provides profound insights into the challenges and opportunities in implementing halal certification for Handicraft MSMEs, emphasizing the crucial role of the government in promoting and facilitating halal certification implementation for Handicraft MSMEs to support growth and competitiveness in the market.   Keywords: Halal certification, Handicraft MSMEs, NVivo

Abstract

As one of the members of the Organisation of Islamic Corporation (OIC), Indonesia has excellent trade prospects. Therefore, this study has a purpose to examine the impact of macroeconomics factors on trade between Indonesia and intra-OIC countries. The variables of macroeconomics in this study consist of country risks, inflation, exchange rate, oil price, and economic growth. Quantitative is the right method for this study, applying Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression with the help of EViews. The data used for the analysis is a time horizon with annual frequency from 1986 to 2016. Furthermore, finding shows that almost all variables of macroeconomics play an insignificant role in determining the trade between Indonesia and Islamic countries. However, the oil price is the only variable to show its contribution towards trade between Indonesia and intra-OIC countries. The results indicate that macroeconomic variables do not contribute to the key decisions for conducting trade internationally. Political factors and bilateral treaties become better variables to explain Indonesia's trade with other Islamic countries. Keywords: Country Risk, International Trade, Macroeconomic, Organisation of Islamic Corporation, Indonesia.

Abstract

Islamic monetary operation policies are regulated to increase the effectiveness in facing economic developments, especially the monetary sector. The working mechanism of the Islamic monetary operation up to its impact on the development of the national economy illustrates the monetary policy transmission carried out by Bank Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of Bank Indonesia Sharia Certificate (SBIS), Bank Indonesia Sharia Deposit Facility (FASBIS), Sharia Interbank Money Market (PUAS), and aggregate financing on Indonesia's economic growth in the period 2010 to 2020. This research method uses a quantitative approach with the analysis technique Vector Auto Regression (VAR) or Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to see the long-term impact and shock response on certain variables. Using secondary data on the variables, it is obtained from the Indonesian Economic and Financial Statistics Bank Indonesia (SEKI-BI) and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for the period January 2010 to December 2020. This study found that the SBIS variable has a negative relationship with GDP. Meanwhile, the variables FASBIS, PUAS, and aggregate financing have a positive relationship with GDP. For the future, it can be used as input and consideration in policy making that will be determined in optimizing Islamic monetary policy in Indonesia. Further research that will discuss this topic should use Islamic monetary instruments that are more complete than Islamic open market operations and sharia standing facilities. As well as comparing with conventional monetary operation instruments as a comparison for Islamic monetary.

Abstract

Abstract: Effective waqf governance is essential for unlocking the full socioeconomic potential of waqf institutions. This paper compares two differentgovernance models: the state-led, top-down approach in Singapore and thecommunity-based, bottom-up model in South Africa. By analyzing the strengthsand weaknesses of each, the study aims to draw lessons for Indonesia, a countrydealing with systemic governance issues. The research employs a qualitative, comparative methodology, utilizing thematic analysis facilitated by NVivosoftware to systematically code and synthesize existing findings from the threenations. The analysis reveals that Singapore's centralized model offers significantefficiency and robust oversight. Still, it also introduces regulatory rigidity that canhinder smaller institutions and raise trust issues within the community.Conversely, South Africa’s independent model has successfully created acomprehensive governance system and promoted public trust; however, it faceslogistical challenges in coordinating volunteers and managing leadershipsuccession. The findings on Indonesia point out critical weaknesses, includingpoorly developed and uncoordinated regulations, a widespread lack ofaccountability among waqf managers (nazhir), and low professional skills.Thepaper concludes that no single model is universally superior. The key implicationfor Indonesia is that reform should not focus on wholesale adoption of an externalmodel. Instead, the central recommendation is the implementation of a robustperformance measurement framework. Such a framework can serve as afoundational tool to build a hybrid model, enabling data-driven, top-downregulation while empowering bottom-up institutional improvement, therebyaddressing the nation's unique challenges. Keywords: Waqf Governance, Performance Measurement, Accountability, TopDown Governance, Bottom-Up Governance

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of human capital, economic freedom, and capital formation on Islamic economic development in the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Using a quantitative approach with panel data from nine OIC countries over the period 2002–2023, the study employs a multi-method panel regression model, including Pooled OLS, Fixed Effect, Random Effect, PCSE, and System GMM. The Human Development Index (HDI) is used as a proxy for Islamic economic development, while the independent variables include dimensions of human capital (MYS and LE), economic freedom (LABF, MONF, TRAF, INVF, FINF), and capital formation (GCF). The analysis results show that variables such as Life expectancy, Gross capital formation, Monetary freedom, and Financial freedom consistently have a significant positive effect on HDI in most models, while variables such as Trade Freedom, Investment Freedom, and Mean Years of Schooling show inconsistent or insignificant effects. This study highlights the importance of synergy between human investment policies, macroeconomic stability, and the Islamic financial system in fostering sustainable and socially just economic growth in the Islamic world. The policy implications of these findings encourage strengthening the health sector, spiritually oriented education, and inclusive Islamic financial governance to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in OIC countries.

Abstract

As an agricultural country, the agricultural sector has a vital role in the development of the national economy. But it does not mean the agricultural sector work without an obstacle. Farmers can not afford to finance their farms with their own funds so that the farmers decide to finance the majority of which come from conventional lending institutions or even loan sharks and "moneylenders” based on the interest system which contains the element of riba. This is what causes financing by using islamic financial institutions are still minimal. Over this condition, making an opportunity as well as a challenge for islamic financial institutions to be present in the community, especially farmers in the agricultural sector, in order to minimize the action of riba in economic activity. As a solution, sharia financial institutions offer appropriate financing schemes in accordance with the needs of farners, but it can also be through the optimization of the function of islamic microfinance institutions (BMT) as an alternative in financing in the agricultural sector, the establishment of agricultural sharia banking and the application of rewards and punishment in financing. Abstract

This paper analyses the product diversifications of insurance companies as supporting facilities for infrastructure development in Indonesia. Infrastructure development requires protection or guarantee and insurance as a medium for risk transfer hinders the implementation of infrastructure development both during the construction process and when the infrastructure is used. Product diversification carried out by insurance companies to support infrastructure development harms the company's financial performance. The more diversified business lines owned by insurance companies, the lower the company's financial performance. This will negatively impact the ability of insurance as a medium for risk transfer. On the other hand, huge ownership of market share and reinsurance will positively affect the financial performance of general insurance companies in Indonesia.
