Abstract

Hope plays an important role in individuals’ attempts to overcome various problems in a positive way and with positive results. This study aims to examine the effect of parent-child attachment on the existence of hope. The research method involved a quantitative approach. The accidental sampling technique was used to determine the sample and identified 400 adolescents consisting of junior and senior high school students aged 12-19 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Parent-child attachment was measured using the Parental Bonding Instrument, while expectation was measured using Snyder's Hope Scale. The data were analyzed using linear regression to predict the relationship between parent and child attachment and expectations. The results show that warm and loving care from the father (B = 0.37, p < .001] and the mother (B = 0.47, p < .001], as well as the provision of autonomy by the father (B = 0.52, p < .001] and mother (B = 0.38, p <.01] proved to be predictors of adolescent expectations, while over-protection from the father (B = 0.03, p> .05]) and the mother (B = -0.18, p> .05) were not predictors of the existence of hope. The implications of the research results could serve as a reference for the parenting practice and guidance to adolescents both in the contexts of family and school education.

Abstract

This research begins with a situation that shows the low academic achievement of junior high school students. Self-regulated learning and authoritative parenting are supporting factors that produce students with good academic achievement. Therefore, this research aims to show the influence of self-regulated learning as a mediator between authoritative parenting and learning achievement in junior high school students in Depok District. This research approach was quantitative research using survey methods. This research was conducted in Depok District, Sleman Regency, with a sample of 303 students. Data collection techniques used cluster random sampling, with research instruments on the scales of authoritative parenting and self-regulated learning. The validity test used total score results (r), and the reliability test used Cronbach's Alpha, with an authoritative parenting style scale value of 0.862 and a self-regulated learning scale of 0.879. In addition, data analysis techniques were carried out using regression with PROCESS v4 for SPSS by Andrew F. Hayes. The research results show that self-regulated learning acts as a mediator between authoritative parenting and learning achievement. In this research, path c had a higher coefficient of 0.4181, and path c' was lower at 0.2501. Based on both, the regression coefficient c' decreased, proving the existence of partial mediation. It can be concluded that there is a partial mediation effect of self-regulated learning from authoritative parenting on learning achievement.

Abstract

This study aimed to test the construct of children’s happiness based on situations and parties that make children happy. The instrument is developed based on previous qualitative research in the form of multiple choices statements using smiling emoticons of different sizes. The subjects were 88 children aged 4-6 years in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Results of exploratory factor analysis show that the antecedent of children’s happiness based on situations is composed of eight factors--doing useful activities, fun activities, entertaining situations, getting attention/things liked, family gathering, and drawing. The parties who play a role in children's happiness are their closest parties (mother, siblings, and God), their closest surrounding environment (father and friends), and other close environment outside nuclear family. Our findings can be used as a reference to measure children's happiness in the Indonesian context so that strategies can be designed to increase children's happiness through effective policies, educational practices, and parenting.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of youth expectations and parental support on the self-efficacy of early adolescents in Madiun City, amid growing concerns about students’ struggles with self-confidence under academic pressures. Employing a quantitative approach, the study sampled 70 seventh-grade students from a broader demographic of over 8,000 across 14 junior high schools, a constraint imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were gathered through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The findings underscore the profound effect of both adolescents’ expectations and parental support on their self-efficacy, highlighting these as significant predictors of students’ confidence in their ability to meet goals. This study’s implications are far-reaching, suggesting that educational and parental strategies focusing on enhancing positive expectations and robust support systems can play a critical role in improving self-efficacy among early adolescents. By addressing these factors, educators and parents can significantly contribute to bolstering students’ self-belief, potentially leading to improved academic outcomes and better psychological well-being.

Abstract

The problems that students experience most common today are a lack of self-confidence and a lack of career planning. This study is quantitative, using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design, aiming to determine the effectiveness of life skills-based career information services for high school students. The respondents in this study were twelfth-grade high school students, with a total of 72 students selected using simple random sampling. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive statistical analysis, normality tests, homogeneity tests, and paired sample t-tests for testing the effective contribution. This Life Skills-Based Career Information Service is effective and proven to be significant. These results suggest that career information services need to be provided to students so that they can determine career choices according to their potential.

Abstract

Developing a scale of interpersonal communication for Muslim students in Indonesia is very important because of the unique cultural and religious context that these students live in. Effective interpersonal communication is essential to fostering a supportive educational environment, improving peer relationships, and improving students' overall well-being. Currently there are no published research findings that specifically discuss measuring interpersonal communication among Muslim students in Indonesia. Therefore, this research aims to develop a valid and reliable Muslim Student Interpersonal Communication Scale (MSICS). MSICS was developed based on five aspects: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positivity, and equality. Content validity was assessed by two psychometric experts, and the results were analyzed using an inter-rater agreement model. Construct validity involved 432 Muslim junior high school students in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia, and the data was analyzed using the Rasch model. The results of the interrater agreement model analysis show that there is agreement between two psychometric experts regarding the acceptability of the statement items in the MSICS. Furthermore, the Rasch model analysis shows that the MSICS appears as a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the level of interpersonal communication among Muslim students in junior high schools in Indonesia with a variance explained by measures value of 26,7% (>20%), which means good enough to describe the measured data, and the reliability value is 0,91, which means very good. The results of this research can be used by counselors or guidance and counseling teachers to use MSICS as an instrument to measure Muslim students' interpersonal communication.
