Abstract

This research investigates the impact of youth expectations and parental support on the self-efficacy of early adolescents in Madiun City, amid growing concerns about students’ struggles with self-confidence under academic pressures. Employing a quantitative approach, the study sampled 70 seventh-grade students from a broader demographic of over 8,000 across 14 junior high schools, a constraint imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were gathered through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The findings underscore the profound effect of both adolescents’ expectations and parental support on their self-efficacy, highlighting these as significant predictors of students’ confidence in their ability to meet goals. This study’s implications are far-reaching, suggesting that educational and parental strategies focusing on enhancing positive expectations and robust support systems can play a critical role in improving self-efficacy among early adolescents. By addressing these factors, educators and parents can significantly contribute to bolstering students’ self-belief, potentially leading to improved academic outcomes and better psychological well-being.

Abstract

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the differences in adolescents’ hope based on developmental phases (age) and gender. Hope, as one of the positive emotional resources, is essential for adolescents in performing psychosocial adaptations. There were still inconsistent results from several studies regarding differences in the level of hope in adolescence based on age and gender, which suggested the need for further investigation. This cross-sectional research involved 400 female and male adolescents who were attending junior and senior high schools with an age range between 13-20 years (M age= 16,04 years, 84% females and 16% males). Data were collected using Snyder’s Hope Scale, which was distributed to respondents through online Google Forms. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test techniques. The results show that most adolescents (45,8%) are in the very high category of hope. Further, the results also indicate that there is no significant difference in hope between early and late adolescents, as well as between girls and boys. This implies that interventions to improve adolescents’ hope can be carried out without paying attention to these demographic variables. Limitations and suggestions for future research related to the results are also discussed.

Abstract

This study began with the emergence of indicators of school refusal behavior, namely truancy among adolescents. Self-esteem and aggressive behavior are factors in the emergence of school refusal. Therefore, this study aims to show the role of aggressive behavior as a mediator between self-esteem and school refusal. This study used a quantitative approach, a cross-sectional survey conducted on 226 students from 14 Junior High Schools in Surakarta. The instruments used were the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (α = 0.752-0.799), the Self-Esteem Inventory scale (α = 0.650-0.722), and the Buss and Perry Aggression Questionnaire scale (α = 0.650-0.720). All scales used have met psychometric requirements and have been validated through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Data were analyzed using SEM-PLS software. The results of this study indicate that self-esteem has an indirect effect on school refusal through aggressive behavior, with a significance value of 4.7%. The F-square results for the relationships between self-esteem and school refusal were 0.681 (strong influence), between self-esteem and aggressive behavior 0.125 (moderate influence), and between aggressive behavior and school refusal 0.033 (low influence). The implication of this research is the need for programs by parents and teachers to increase students' self-esteem, thereby reducing aggressive behavior and school refusal. Keywords: aggressive, school refusal, self-esteem

Abstract

This paper contends that the contextual worship debate ought to go beyond issues of style adjustment and aesthetic appropriateness to a more stringent practical-theological description of how worship conveys faith, shapes ecclesial identity and is not subject to instrumental diminution. With an interpretive library research design, the article peruses the theory of communicative action by Jurgen Habermas and some of the most significant discussions in practical theology, liturgical studies, digital ecclesiology, and Indonesian contextual theology. It is revealed that the best way to understand worship is as communicative-theological praxis where the truth claims, normative claims, and expressive claims are united in the lifeworld of the church. In that regard, cultural proximity, technological sophistication, or numerical appeal cannot be considered as a judgment of contextualization. It has to be assessed on whether it maintains theological fidelity, enhances communicative intelligibility, nurtures participatory reciprocity and fosters ethical-transformative fruit in community life. One of the new aspects of the article is the suggestion of these four criteria as an evaluation tool to differentiate between contextualization and instrumentalization. The existence of such a framework enables the evaluation of digital, hybrid, and culture-based worship practices without either reduction to nostalgic traditionalism or market-driven innovationism. The conclusion of the study is that practical theology is a critical and constructive exercise: it assists churches to make the gospel relevant to them in specific cultural ways and to protect worship against being turned into a spectacle or a product, an efficient religious service.

Abstract

The search for meaning in life among late adolescents is a crucial factor in their identity development, especially in the midst of social and emotional challenges. Although many studies have been conducted on the meaning of life, the limitations of existing instruments are unable to reflect the complexity of the meaning of life experience in late adolescents, so modifications are needed to address this need. This study aims to modify the meaning of life scale to better fit the context and experiences of adolescents. Using a quantitative approach, 116 active students aged 18-21 years from various universities in three provinces participated in this study. The instrument used was a modified meaning of life scale based on Michael F. Steger's theory, including two dimensions, namely the existence of meaning and the search for meaning. The results of the analysis showed that the modified scale not only had high validity and reliability, but also effectively captured the complexity of adolescents' life experiences. The findings provide important insights in understanding the dynamics of adolescents' meaning in life and open up opportunities for the development of intervention programs that are more relevant and based on their needs.

Abstract

Raising children with disabilities presents complex challenges that affect multiple aspects of family life. However, previous studies indicate that disability acceptance may serve as a protective factor for family resilience and quality of life in navigating these challenges. This study aims to explore the meaning of disability acceptance among parents of children with disabilities in Indonesia. A qualitative approach using a phenomenological design was employed, and data were analyze using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with three parents in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, who were selected through purposive sampling. The findings identified six stages of acceptance, namely shock, denial, guilt, depression, rational acceptance, and spiritual acceptance. In addition, five superordinate themes describing the meaning of disability acceptance were generated: (1) transformation of meaning from a burden to a source of happiness, (2) acceptance as a repetitive and non-linear process, (3) adjustment of expectations and future planning based on the child’s potential, (4) acceptance grounded in moral values and unconditional love, and (5) spiritual acceptance as a form of surrender to destiny and life challenges. These findings indicate that disability acceptance is not only an emotional process but also a meaning-making construction influenced by personal values, family relationships, and spiritual beliefs. The study highlights the importance of culturally and spiritually sensitive support in facilitating parents’ disability acceptance processes.
