Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of multicultural education based on local values in the multiethnic community of Kayu Aro. Kayu Aro is home to various ethnic groups, including Kerinci, Javanese, Minangkabau, and Batak, who have long coexisted in shared social, cultural, and economic spaces. Although this diversity has given rise to harmonious social practices such as interethnic cooperation, tolerance toward cultural traditions, and the use of Javanese as a lingua franca, these values have not yet been systematically integrated into the formal educational process. As a result, lessons on diversity in schools often remain abstract and detached from the students’ lived experiences. This research adopts a mixed methods approach, with concurrent triangulation design. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and field observations, while quantitative data were obtained through student surveys measuring their understanding of multicultural values. The findings show that local values possess strong potential to serve as a foundation for multicultural education, particularly in fostering students’ awareness of the importance of coexistence in a plural society. However, the absence of structured efforts to incorporate these local narratives into school curricula and teaching strategies remains a significant barrier. This study recommends the integration of local values into school practices as a contextualized and culturally responsive approach to multicultural education one that is equitable, experience-based, and rooted in the social realities of students.Keywords: Multicultural Education, Local Values, Multiethnic Society, Contextual Learning

Abstract

Kearifan Lokal Ruwatan Lembur Kampung Cikareumbi Desa Sadang. Ruwatan lembur merupakan suatu tradisi ritual masyarakat RW 03 Kampung Cikareumbi untuk mensyukuri nikmat yang telah diberikan oleh Yang Maha Kuasa atas berlimpahnya sumber air untuk kehidupan masyarakat. Pada tradisi ruwatan lembur sumber air sebagai kearifan lokal masyarakat yang menjadi objek yang disyukurinya. Tradisi ruwatan lembur terdiri dari serangkaian acara yaitu ngaruwat, ngarawat, ngalengitkeun raruwet, di mana setiap acara memiliki makna tersendiri. Acara ruwatan lembur itu sendiri terdiri dari ngarawat, panumbalan dan perang tomat. Dari setiap rangkaian acaranya pun menjunjung tinggi makna Sapitong (Sauyunan, Sapikiran, dan Gotong Royong) menjadi landasan masyarakat Cikareumbi dalam mengadakan acara ruwatan lembur. Dalam acara ruwatan lembur pun setiap lapisan masyarakat turut berpartisipasi sehingga peran untuk mengupayakan pewarisan ruwatan lembur pun dapat terlaksana secara tidak langsung.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the effect of diorama-based Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) on the enhancement of high school students' multicultural awareness. It also compares the increase in awareness between students who participated in diorama-based learning and those who used cultural-themed posters.Methodology – A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was employed involving two intact classes of sociology students (n=76) at SMAN 1 Ciparay. The experimental group received diorama-based CRT integrated with Project-Based Learning, while the control group utilized thematic posters. Data were collected using validated pre-test and post-test questionnaires measuring four indicators of multicultural awareness. The analysis utilized gain scores, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and the Mann-Whitney U non-parametric test.Findings – Descriptively, the experimental group's average score increased from 113 to 117 (average gain = 3.16), whereas the control group's average score increased from 109 to 111 (average gain = 1.68). The Wilcoxon test confirmed a significant internal improvement within the experimental group (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U test demonstrated a statistically significant difference in gain scores between the two groups (p = 0.022, r = 0.262). Commitment to social justice and empathy for other groups exhibited the most prominent improvement.Contribution – This research enriches the study of CRT implementation in sociology education, offering concrete pedagogical alternatives for pluralistic societies like Indonesia. The findings highlight that structured, project-based diorama activities can positively influence students' multicultural awareness and support experiential learning strategies in the curriculum.

Abstract

This article discusses the tradition of "makan bedulang" in Belitung as a source for learning about multiculturalism in sociology. The aim of this research is to understand the diversity of Belitung society, the philosophical values of the tradition of makan bedulang, and how multicultural education can be taught through cultural traditions like makan bedulang in Belitung society. This research is descriptive in nature, and the objects of study are the tradition of makan bedulang, its philosophical values, and multicultural education. Data collection was conducted through library research, and data analysis was done by analyzing the values in the tradition of makan bedulang and using those values as a source for multicultural education. The results of this study indicate that: (1) the background of the Belitung island community is very diverse in terms of ethnicity, culture, and nationality; (2) the tradition of makan bedulang is a tradition that has many meaningful values, including ethics, aesthetics, religion, and social values; and (3) the tradition of makan bedulang can be used as a source for teaching multicultural education in the subject of sociology.
