Abstract

Reading ability is a fundamental skill crucial for the academic and social development of students, particularly for third-grade elementary students who are at the initial stage of advanced literacy. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a guided reading method combined with the use of flashcards on students' reading abilities and self-confidence. An experimental method was employed, utilizing a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample was selected through purposive sampling, comprising a total of 28 students from State Elementary School 27 Rabadompu Timur. The research findings indicate that the average pretest score was approximately 61.29, while the posttest average score increased to around 74.54, demonstrating the effectiveness of the flashcard method in enhancing students' reading abilities. The paired samples test revealed a significance value (p-value) of 0.000, which is well below the significance level of 0.05, affirming that the use of flashcards significantly improves students' reading skills. Additionally, self-confidence responses indicated that students felt more confident during reading activities, and participatory observation results suggested that the use of flashcards enhanced overall student engagement and enthusiasm. As a visual aid, flashcards facilitated information retention and created a more interactive learning environment. Future research may explore the effectiveness of flashcards tailored to varying levels of complexity.

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the strategies used by class teachers in overcoming reading learning difficulties of second grade students at SD Negeri 1 Sri Tanjung. This research employs descriptive qualitative research methods in the form of a case study. Qualitative research is also referred to as a naturalistic research method, as it is conducted in natural conditions. The findings of the research and subsequent discussion lead to the conclusion that a form of learning difficulty, specifically reading difficulties, was identified in Class II SDN Sritanjung. The reading difficulties observed in the field are classified as low-level reading difficulties. The strategies employed by the class teachers are not optimal, as evidenced by the persistence of difficulties in learning to read and write among a significant proportion of students. The teacher's strategy for introducing beginning reading employs a multi-modal approach, integrating the thickening of letters, the word wall method, reading book media, and a range of activities, including letter and word games, singing, the question-and-answer method, and the assignment method.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation processes, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors in strengthening character education through the Scout and Rebana extracurricular activities at SDN 1 Banyuasin III. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, which were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that character education strengthening has been systematically integrated into both extracurricular activities. In the Scout activities, the characters of discipline, responsibility, and cooperation are the primary focus, while in Rebana, the values of religiosity, tolerance, and solidarity are emphasized. Activity planning is carried out through coordination meetings with the instructor and school officials, activities are implemented according to a pre-agreed routine schedule, and supervision is carried out directly by the instructor. Evaluations are conducted periodically to assess the achievement of character goals. Supporting factors include full support from the principal, the availability of competent instructors, and student enthusiasm. Inhibiting factors include limited infrastructure and scheduling conflicts with other activities. This study concludes that the extracurricular activities of Scouting and Rebana play a strategic role in shaping student character aligned with the Pancasila Student Profile. The implications of this research are the need to optimize facilities, increase the capacity of instructors, and foster synergy between schools, parents, and the community to strengthen the implementation of character education in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of the School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah/GLS) and school library facilities on the reading interest of fifth-grade students in public elementary schools in Sukarami District, Palembang City. Employing a quantitative approach with a survey method, data were collected from 347 students selected through proportional random sampling out of a population of 2,658 students. The research design involved multiple linear regression analysis complemented by t-tests and F-tests to examine both partial and simultaneous effects. Findings demonstrate that GLS significantly enhances students’ reading interest by fostering consistent reading habits and cultivating a literacy-friendly environment. School library facilities, including the availability of relevant collections, comfortable spaces, and active literacy services, were also found to exert a positive effect, although their influence was less dominant compared to GLS. Simultaneously, both factors interact to strengthen literacy culture in schools. These results highlight the necessity of integrating structured literacy programs with the development of supportive library infrastructures to achieve sustainable improvements in elementary students’ reading engagement.
