Abstract

Myth can be defined as a story or culture of a community that contains religion and passes it on orally, which can influence people's lives. Morphology events relate to the origin of the universe, the first humans, gods, and other supernatural beings. This research discusses mythology as the study of mythical stories, which are often related to the lives of gods and spirits in people's cultures. One of the myths analyzed in this study is the myth of To Manurung in the novel Lontara by Windy Joana, which tells the story of a messenger of God for the Bugis Makassar community. This research aims to describe the myth structure in the novel Lontara through four levels proposed by Lévi-Strauss, namely geographical, economic, sociological, and cosmological levels. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This research refers to Claude Lévi-Strauss' theory of myth structuralism, which identifies four levels in the myth structure, namely geographical, economic, sociological, and cosmological levels. The results of this study show that in the novel Lontara by Windy Joana, there are four levels of myth structure, namely: (1) Geographical Level, (2) Economic Level, (3) Sociological Level, and (4) Cosmological Level.

Abstract

This study explores the linguistic kinship between the Sibolga Coastal Malay and Mandailing languages using the lexicostatistical method. Both languages belong to the Austronesian family and are spoken in close geographical proximity, raising questions about their historical relationship. By utilizing a 200-word Swadesh list, the research identifies shared lexical items and phonemic correspondences between the two languages. The findings reveal a lexical similarity of 38%, classifying the two as part of the same language family. Based on the lexicostatistical formula, the separation between the two languages is estimated to have occurred around 2,230 years ago, or approximately between 382 and 32 BCE, considering a standard error margin. This suggests that Sibolga Coastal Malay and Mandailing evolved from a common proto-language, with divergence influenced by geographical and sociocultural factors. The study provides valuable insight into historical language development in North Sumatra and emphasizes the importance of comparative linguistics in tracing the evolution of regional languages. These results also support the hypothesis that Malay and Mandailing linguistic features have undergone gradual yet distinct phonological and lexical changes over time.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the types and factors that cause code-mixing, using qualitative descriptive research methods and the matching method. Data collection techniques included listening, recording, and note-taking, while data analysis was conducted using the Determinant Element Sorting technique. The theories applied included sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and multilingualism, as well as the concept of code-mixing according to Muysken and Suwito. The results of the study show that the film’s dialogue contains three types of code-mixing: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization, with insertion being the most prevalent. Examples of insertion include base words, affixed words, and compound words. Alternation involves switching from Indonesian to English and from Sundanese to Indonesian. Congruent lexicalization encompasses foreign and mixed lexical items. The use of code-mixing is also influenced by factors such as role identification, variety identification, and the desire to explain and interpret. Thus, the use of code-mixing in the film’s dialogue reflects the speakers’ adaptation to their roles, the context, and their communicative needs.
