Abstract

Background: Indonesia's palm oil industry faces growing sustainability pressure, including compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Following its December 2023 merger, PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV PalmCo is integrating ESG principles into its operations. Objective: This study aims to analyze the implementation of circular economy and carbon emission reduction strategies as part of the ESG framework at PTPN IV PalmCo. Methods: Using a descriptive qualitative case study with secondary data from company reports, verified media, and official documents (2023–2025), this research finds that PalmCo has implemented a circular economy by converting palm oil waste into renewable energy through 11 biogas facilities, targeting 32 facilities by 2029 and over 80% renewable energy utilization. Results: The carbon emission reduction strategy, implemented through both nature-based and technology-based approaches, has resulted in carbon sequestration of 873,395 tons CO₂e/year and emission reductions of 191,107 tons CO₂e/year, while also achieving the first Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reduction Certificate in the plantation industry. Both initiatives are strongly integrated into the ESG framework, as evidenced by PalmCo’s #2 global ranking in the S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) 2024 and its receipt of two Diamond Awards at the ESG Initiative Awards 2025. Conclusion: This research contributes to ESG literature in the plantation sector by demonstrating, through Legitimacy Theory, that PalmCo is transitioning from symbolic to substantive legitimacy, evidenced by verified emission reductions and the integration of ESG indicators into management KPIs. These findings offer a theoretical contribution to ESG implementation in state-owned plantation enterprises.

Abstract

Background: This study examines the factors influencing transfer pricing aggressiveness in multinational companies. Transfer pricing has become a major concern in international taxation because multinational firms may shift profits across jurisdictions to reduce their tax liabilities. Previous studies suggest that ownership structures and macroeconomic factors influence transfer pricing decisions; however, empirical evidence remains inconclusive. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of tunneling incentives and exchange rates on transfer pricing aggressiveness, with tax avoidance as a moderating variable.   Methods: This study employs a quantitative research design using secondary data from the annual reports and financial statements of manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period 2020–2023. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, yielding 30 companies and 120 observations. Data analysis was conducted using panel data regression. Results: The results indicate that tunneling incentives have a significant positive effect on transfer pricing aggressiveness, whereas exchange rates do not have a significant effect. Furthermore, tax avoidance strengthens the positive relationship between tunneling incentives and transfer pricing aggressiveness but does not moderate the relationship between exchange rates and transfer pricing aggressiveness. Conclusions: This study contributes to the transfer pricing literature by providing empirical evidence on the determinants of transfer pricing aggressiveness among Indonesian manufacturing firms. The findings emphasize the role of ownership incentives in shaping transfer pricing practices and provide useful insights for policymakers seeking to strengthen transfer pricing regulations.

Abstract

Danareksa SOE Holding was established as a specialist transformation holding to revitalize underperforming state-owned enterprises (SOEs), including PT Balai Pustaka (Persero), which had long experienced financial distress and was integrated in 2022. This study examines differences in the financial performance of PT Balai Pustaka (Persero) before and after its integration into the Danareksa SOE Holding. The study employs a quantitative comparative event-study approach using quarterly financial statement data for 2018–2025, grouped into pre-integration and post-integration periods. Financial performance is measured through nine ratios representing liquidity, solvency, profitability, and activity dimensions. The analysis applies the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test at a 5% significance level. The results indicate that 8 of 9 financial ratios differ significantly between the pre- and post-integration periods. However, significant differences do not necessarily imply improved performance, as the direction of change reflects short-term deterioration in liquidity, profitability, leverage, and asset utilization efficiency. The persistence of weak profitability is closely related to cost rigidity, reflected in a much sharper decline in revenue than in operating expense adjustments. At the same time, non-financial benefits were identified through the implementation of a novation mechanism for settling partner receivables and payables, as well as a decline in the proportion of non-personnel operating expenses to 25.6% in 2025. These findings suggest that post-integration benefits initially emerged in governance and internal process improvements before being fully translated into financial indicators.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of pressure and arrogance on firm value, both directly and indirectly through financial statement fraud as a mediating variable in energy sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the 2021–2024 period. The study employs a quantitative approach using panel data obtained from the annual reports and financial statements of 30 energy sector companies, resulting in 120 observations. Data analysis was conducted using panel data regression with the Random Effect Model (REM) and Sobel test to examine the mediating effect. The results indicate that pressure has a positive and significant effect on both firm value and financial statement fraud. Arrogance also has a positive and significant effect on firm value but does not significantly affect financial statement fraud. Furthermore, financial statement fraud is found to have a positive and significant effect on firm value. The mediation analysis reveals that financial statement fraud mediates the relationship between pressure and firm value but fails to mediate the relationship between arrogance and firm value. These findings support the Fraud Pentagon Theory, particularly the pressure element, in explaining the occurrence of financial statement fraud within the Indonesian energy sector. The study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the role of financial statement fraud as a mechanism linking managerial pressure to firm value.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure on company value and investigates whether institutional ownership moderates this relationship in banking sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the 2022–2024 period. The study is motivated by the critical role of the banking sector in the Indonesian financial system, accounting for approximately seventy-three percent of total national financial assets, as well as the persistent inconsistency in previous research findings regarding the effect of ESG disclosure on firm value. The sample consists of one hundred and forty-four firm-year observations obtained from banking companies selected using purposive sampling with criteria including the consecutive publication of annual reports and sustainability reports during the observation period. Panel data regression analysis with the Fixed Effect Model was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicate that ESG disclosure does not have a significant effect on company value, suggesting that sustainability information has not been optimally integrated into investors' valuation assessments in the Indonesian banking sector. Furthermore, institutional ownership does not moderate the relationship between ESG disclosure and company value, implying that institutional investors' supervisory function has not effectively enhanced the credibility or market relevance of ESG information. Among the control variables, firm size has a significant negative effect on company value, while profitability does not significantly influence company value. These findings suggest that investors in the Indonesian banking sector still prioritize traditional financial performance over non-financial sustainability information, and institutional ownership alone is insufficient to strengthen the market response to ESG disclosure.

Abstract

Fraudulent financial statement remains a critical concern in the banking industry, given its systemic implications for investor confidence and financial stability. Grounded in fraud triangle theory, this study examines the effect of pressure on fraudulent financial statement with income smoothing as a moderating variable in Indonesian listed banks. Using a balanced panel dataset of 48 banks over the period 2022-2024 (144 observations), this study employs Panel Estimated Generalized Least Squares (EGLS) with cross-section weights and Fixed Effect Model. The findings reveal that financial stability positively and significantly influences fraudulent financial statements, while external pressure shows no significant effect. Income smoothing significantly moderates both relationships, attenuating the effect of financial stability and external pressure on fraudulent financial statements. These results extend fraud triangle theory by demonstrating that the relevance of pressure proxies is industry-contingent and that income smoothing functions as a substitutive mechanism rather than a complement to fraudulent reporting. Practically, the findings underscore the importance of asset-growth-based early warning systems for regulators and reinforce the need for stronger governance mechanisms in high-growth banking institutions.
HOW OVERCONFIDENCE, BIAS, AND HERDING AFFECT TRADING DECISIONS: THE MODERATING ROLE OF ACCOUNTING KNOWLEDGE Muhammad Faisal; Amrie Firmansyah

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Overconfidence Bias and Herding Behavior on stock trading decisions among retail traders on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, with Accounting Information Knowledge as a moderating variable. The study is motivated by the rapid surge in retail investor participation reaching 20.32 million by the end of 2025, with 52.59% under the age of 30 dominating 52-77% of daily transactions, yet exhibiting irrational trading patterns characterized by panic selling, overtrading, and portfolio returns lagging 5% below the benchmark index. The sample consists of fifty-one retail traders who actively trade on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, selected through purposive sampling. Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicate that Overconfidence Bias has a positive and significant effect on Trading Decisions, suggesting that higher overconfidence leads to more aggressive and impulsive trading decisions. Herding Behavior has a positive and significant effect on Trading Decisions, indicating that retail traders tend to make market trends, community opinion, and social media sentiment the primary basis for decision-making. However, Accounting Information Knowledge does not moderate the relationship between Overconfidence Bias and Trading Decisions, nor between Herding Behavior and Trading Decisions, indicating a gap between textual understanding of financial information and analytical application in real-time decision-making. The findings suggest that psychological biases dominate retail trading behavior while accounting knowledge remains passive and unable to function as a cognitive filter, highlighting the need for literacy programs that develop analytical skills rather than merely transferring knowledge.

Abstract

High cash holdings in Indonesian banking firms raise concerns regarding efficiency and optimal resource allocation. This study investigates the impact of foreign ownership on cash holdings in Indonesian banks. This study is based on 637 firm-year observations from 46 Indonesian banks covering the 2004–2022 period. Due to incomplete yearly data, the analysis applies Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression using a cross-sectional approach. The results show that foreign ownership negatively affects all cash-holding proxies, particularly in mature banks with large asset bases. In contrast, it increases cash holdings in young banks with large assets and mature banks with small assets. These findings suggest that foreign investors may influence more efficient cash allocation, encouraging banks to direct resources toward productive investments. The study offers practical implications for policymakers and banking practitioners in enhancing cash management and governance structures in the presence of foreign stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the impact of financial performance on the level of financial independence of hospitals using the effectiveness of the use of funds as a moderation.Research Methodology: This research uses quantitative methods with secondary data from 28 hospitals from 2021-2023. The hypothesis was tested on panel data with double regression analysis. Results: The test results showed that the profitability and activity ratio had a significant positive influence on the hospital's financial independence level, whereas the liquidity ratio did not significantly influence the hospital's financial independence level. The research also concluded that the effectiveness of the use of funds reinforces the positive influence of the profitability and liquidity ratios on the level of financial independence but weakens the positive relationship between the ratio of activity and the level of financial independence.Limitations: This research only used 3 proxies for the financial performance. It also did not conduct research on service performance due to the limitations of the research data obtained.Contribution: This study is expected to provide information that helps increase hospitals' financial independence so that the hospitals’ objectives can be achieved to the maximum.
