Abstract

The structure on an idea of Singengu ancestor about Datu (Creator) which is gives tondi (spirit/soul) through direction of sun movement has established the logic of Bincar (sunrising direction) and Bonom (sunsetting direction). The logic of Bincar-Bonom with the axis point has been manifests in the form of myths about relationships between Datu (Creator/God), King (Datu’s agent in the world) and the ancestors which also form the structure of abstract space namely Bincar and Bonom. The structure of abstract space namely Bincar-Bonom in the next steps has transformed concretely on architectural phenomena as a place on room arrangement. Bincar-Bonom in the context of structural concept is transformed in to room arrangement phenomenon concretely which has  arrange the setting of bedroom for parent in the direction of Bonom and bedroom for son in the direction of Bincar with family room in the midle of it as axis point.

Abstract

The scientific study of the integrated utility network in the city of Medan, and the mapping of safety locations in the city of Medan. The title of the study became the initial discussion material to formulate the focus of research in the infrastructure sector on the most urgent (important) infrastructure problems found in the city of Medan inventory of drainage flow dimensions and patterns, Measurement of drainage channel base elevation, Inventory of public perceptions of water management and drainage systems, Analysis of hydrology Hydraulic analysis and social analysis of society. It was found that there were 2 sewers on Jalan Cempaka, but the dimensions that changed significantly resulted in being unable to accommodate runoff from upstream. The sewer at the District Office is at the lowest elevation and becomes a collection of flows from various directions. The second sewer near the leafy Glugur road is suffering from the settlement. The impact of land-use change without knowing the function of the natural channel has an impact on the closure of the natural discharge channel, thus affecting the pattern of runoff. Selayang River is one of the causes due to the low channel dimensions. Irregular channel size is related to flooding problems due to river overflow, it is necessary to normalize the river by considering the potential that exists in each river. Flood problems also require handling from upstream to downstream. Solving the problem of air and flood problems requires clear regulations. For this reason, appropriate regulations are needed for solving water and flood problems at the level of policies or regulations of the Medan City Government. Keywords: Accompaniment, Network research, development, infrastructure,

Abstract

AbstractTraditional societies have always retained unique experiences and understanding about their houses. The experiences and understanding tend to be subjective, yet there is a real manifestation. This study aims to explain the concept of sacred-profane on room arrangement of heirloom houses at Mandailing society. This rationalistic study has been conducted in a descriptive-explorative way of using sacred-profane theory. The result shows that the room arrangement on heirloom houses of Mandailing society retain one space that is persistently existed, although the house is continued to grow, i.e., “Pantar Tonga” (middle room as living room). The room has become a universal pillar or axis mundi as well as sacred object. The sacred value of pantar tonga has reinforced the existence of the heirloom house until now without any significant change. Keywords: Heirloom House, Sacred-Profane, Axis-Mundi, Pantar Tonga

Abstract

Abstract

Mountain peoples’ basic understanding of the world is based on binary space concepts such as top-down, left-right, east-west, sacred-profane, and others, which form a threefold division structure that places people in the middle of their environment. Mountain settlements in several places in Indonesia that still emphasize this primitive understanding or classification are interesting to study in terms of their similarities and differences. This study aimed to compare three cases of settlements, namely Singengu Mandailing village in North Sumatra, Tenganan village in Bali, and Kampung Naga in West Java in terms of their understanding of binary space concepts that constitute this threefold division structure and their application in the planning of the community’s living environment. This study is a theoretical dialogue between the concept of binary space (bincar-bonom) in Singengu Mandailing village and two other local concepts that are similar, namely kangin-kauh (sunrise-sunset) in Tenganan village and timur-barat (east-west) in Kampung Naga. This qualitative study used data from the literature and the analysis was carried out following a qualitative descriptive research procedure. Based on previous research, each case has its own data, which the authors used to uncover differences and similarities in the binary space concepts from the three study cases. The authors employed a spatial matrix image to depict the position of each settlement element in the three cases, allowing the similarities and differences to be seen. The findings of the study show that Tenganan, Kampung Naga, and Singengu Mandailing have striking similarities in terms of addressing the middle point, namely as an axis or axis point. The difference lies in the filler elements and their value. The mountain village of Bali interprets the sacred-profane binary concept similarly to the mountain village of Mandailing, except in terms of the direction of sunrise-sunset. The settlement arrangement of Tenganan Pageringsingan village at the macro, meso, and micro scales defines the direction of the sunrise and sunset as a profane direction, whereas in Singengu village, the direction of the sunrise is a sacred direction and the direction of the sunset is a profane direction. As for the Singengu and the Naga communities, they understand the middle point to be related to the direction of the sunrise and sunset in opposite directions, so there are differences in treating certain artifacts, especially cemeteries. The binary space that influences the process of forming rural settlements in the mountains can be: (1) the physical setting due to natural/geographical conditions, (2) the cosmology and belief systems adhered to, and (3) the people’s socio-cultural life. Rural settlements in the mountains can also be said to emphasize the natural aspect of the mountains with all of their spatial shaping potential. The study’s findings further show that the local people’s understanding of their living space patterns has been carried over from previous generations to the present day. This suggests that settlement planning for local communities, particularly in mountainous areas where hereditary beliefs still exist, must be approached in a specific way. In future planning projects, different locations require different planning approaches.

Abstract

Warga desa Singengu mengelola, memanfaatkan dan melestarikan lingkungan hutan-sungai melalui konsep taboo (pantang) sebagai pangolat (pembatas) tempat, sehingga terbentuklah dua jenis tempat, yaitu tempat-tempat yang boleh dilakukan aktifitas di dalamnya dan tempat-tempat yang dilarang.ABSTRACTSingengu is the first village that was built by the ancestors of the Lubis clan people on the way down the mountain. Singengu people believe that forest, soil and river are not only used as a place to indulge for a living, but it also has ias (sacred) value. Specific areas within the forest and river is considered taboo (abstinence) to be entered. Violation of the ban is believed to be getting the curse of roguk (gatekeepers/guardian). Research on systems management, utilization and conservation of forest, soil and river is related with two realities, namely the tangible (real) and intangible (not-real) so that the appropriate paradigm to explore the meaning behind two reality phenomena is phenomenology method. Phenomeology method which is used is Husserlian phenomenology. The results showed that the system of management, utilization and conservation of forest and river done in two ways, namely in the form of written rules uhum dohot ugari (rules /regulations made by ancestral custom) and myths about rarangan (ban) and roguk (gatekeepers) so that certain areas be 'forbidden'/prohibited for human activities. Singengu people manage, utilize and conserve the forest, soil and river environments through concepts taboo (abstinence) as pangolat (barrier/delimiter) places, thus forming two types of places, places that may do the activities in it and forbidden places.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Mandailing community settlement in North Sumatra has many historic elements. The purpose of this research is to identify the physical and non-physical aspects of the Mandailing community's residential areas in three villages that have the potential to be preserved and maintained, as well as to determine how large an area is appropriate for conservation. This study employs a descriptive-exploratory-qualitative approach to identify settlement physical elements (buildings, open spaces, and roads) and non-physical elements (socio-cultural, layout, orientation, and patterns) with the potential to be preserved. According to the study, physical characteristics are classified into physical buildings and non-buildings. Bagas Godang, Sopo Godang, Sopo Emme, mosques, Pancur Paridian, Sopo Saba, Sopo Ladang, and Bale Hombung are among the physical elements of the structure. Alaman Bolak Selangseutang, roads, rivers, plantation areas, fields, rice fields, and forests are non-building physical features. Non-physical aspects that impact the settlement environment include: a) using the Banua principle, b) differences in village status, and c) the spatial Dalihan Natolu Social System. Overall, the Mandailing residential area can be divided into two zones: conservation areas, which are planned to be renovated, restored, and rehabilitated using contextual Mandailing architectural designs while still adhering to local regulations, and preservation areas, which are allowed to preserve the existence of each of its constituent elements while adhering to local laws. The preservation and conservation policies that will be implemented in each case will be handled in a specific order based on established criteria, namely immediate handling of case 4 and subsequent handling of the following three points in the order of handling case 2, case 3, and case 1.

Abstract

The impact of covid 19 makes the habits of people who work and students often work or study via online. A cozy and adequate space is needed to carry out online activities and freelance work. The right solution is to design a coworking space mix use building that can provide space and facilities to support comfort for consumers. Coworking Space is a workspace concept that can be used together with various backgrounds such as students, freelancers, students, entrepreneurs, or other companies. In Medan City coworking spaces are still relatively few that have multi-functions as the author designs. Most only prioritize one function so that consumers can easily get bored when working. In this design, hopefully it can be a problem solver and become a comfortable working, meeting and relaxing space for consumers.
