Abstract

Roads are a vital land transportation infrastructure that supports community mobility and regional economic development. However, as the service life of a pavement increases, its condition gradually deteriorates due to repeated traffic loading and environmental factors. If not properly managed, pavement deterioration may reduce the level of road service, increase the risk of traffic accidents, and raise vehicle operating costs. Therefore, periodic pavement condition evaluation is essential to identify the extent of deterioration and to determine appropriate maintenance priorities. This study aims to assess pavement conditions using the Provincial/Kabupaten Road Management System (PKRMS) through the Surface Distress Index (SDI) method, evaluate the functional condition of the road using the Road Condition Index (RCI) method, and determine maintenance priorities for the Malimbu–Pengempus Sari Road in North Lombok Regency. A visual pavement survey was conducted on 51 road segments, and the collected data were processed using the PKRMS application to obtain SDI and RCI values as well as maintenance recommendations. The SDI analysis indicated that 17 segments (33.33%) required routine maintenance, 21 segments (41.18%) required periodic maintenance, and 13 segments (25.49%) required reconstruction. The highest SDI value of 265 was identified at STA 1+600–1+700, STA 2+300–2+400, STA 2+500–3+400, STA 4+000–4+200, and STA 4+400–4+600, where the predominant pavement distresses consisted of potholes and surface deformation. Meanwhile, the RCI values ranged from 4.00 to 6.00, indicating that the functional condition of the road varied from fair to good. The integration of SDI and RCI through the PKRMS application produced maintenance priorities dominated by periodic maintenance, followed by routine maintenance and reconstruction, according to the condition of each road segment. The findings demonstrate that integrating SDI and RCI within the PKRMS framework provides a more objective and comprehensive basis for determining road maintenance priorities by considering both the structural and functional conditions of the pavement.

Abstract

Water-induced deterioration remains one of the major causes of premature failure in Asphalt Concrete–Wearing Course (AC-WC) pavements, reducing pavement service life and increasing maintenance costs. This study investigates the effect of incorporating Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (UPVC) waste as an additive on the durability of AC-WC mixtures subjected to different water immersion durations. Marshall testing was conducted following the 2018 Bina Marga General Specifications (Revision 2) using specimens immersed for 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 24, and 48 hours. The evaluated parameters included Marshall stability, flow, Marshall Quotient (MQ), Void in Mix (VIM), Void in Mineral Aggregate (VMA), Void Filled with Bitumen (VFB), and retained durability. The results indicate that the mixture containing 6% UPVC maintained satisfactory performance after prolonged immersion. Marshall stability remained above the minimum specification, decreasing from its optimum value to 1249 kg after 48 hours, while durability remained at 114.9%, exceeding the required 90%. However, the flow value gradually increased to 4.67 mm, indicating reduced resistance to permanent deformation under extended immersion. These findings demonstrate that incorporating 6% UPVC enhances the moisture resistance of AC-WC mixtures while supporting the sustainable utilization of plastic waste in pavement engineering.

Abstract

This study evaluates the bearing capacity of highway subgrade through laboratory California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing under soaked and unsoaked conditions. The research aims to determine the physical characteristics, compaction properties, and bearing capacity of clayey sand subgrade collected from Sepi Highway, West Lombok, Indonesia. Laboratory tests were conducted in accordance with the relevant Indonesian National Standards (SNI), including soil classification, Standard Proctor compaction, and CBR testing. The soil was classified as clayey sand (SC) based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and as A-2-7 according to the AASHTO classification system. The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content were 1.390 g/cm³ and 27.782%, respectively. The unsoaked CBR value reached 6.674%, whereas the soaked CBR value decreased significantly to 3.115%, indicating a substantial reduction in bearing capacity under saturated conditions. These findings demonstrate that water saturation is the primary factor reducing subgrade performance. Therefore, chemical stabilization, soil replacement, geotextile reinforcement, and improved drainage are recommended to enhance pavement stability and prolong highway service life.

Abstract

The increasing amount of Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (UPVC) waste generated from the construction sector has become an environmental concern, highlighting the need for its reutilization as a value-added construction material. This study aimed to analyze the effect of UPVC powder waste content on the mechanical properties of paving blocks and to determine the effective dosage that provides optimum performance. The research was conducted experimentally at the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram using UPVC powder waste as a partial replacement for fine aggregate at proportions of 0%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1.00%, both without and with the addition of 2% accelerator. The specimens consisted of paving blocks measuring 20 cm × 10 cm × 8 cm and were tested at the age of 14 days to evaluate compressive strength and water absorption. The results indicated that increasing the UPVC content tended to reduce compressive strength and increase water absorption. In mixtures without accelerator, the average compressive strength decreased from 19.58 MPa to 14.85 MPa, while water absorption increased from 3.13% to 3.34%. The addition of 2% accelerator improved the performance of the paving blocks, as indicated by a compressive strength of 24.53 MPa and water absorption of 2.18% at the 0.25% UPVC variation. Based on the evaluation of the requirements specified in SNI 03-0691-1996, the recommended effective content of UPVC powder waste was 0.25% of the fine aggregate weight with the addition of 2% accelerator, as it provided the best balance between waste utilization and the mechanical performance of paving blocks. The findings demonstrate that UPVC waste has the potential to be utilized as an alternative material that supports sustainable construction and the circular economy.

Abstract

The condition of road pavement that continues to experience degradation due to traffic loads and environmental factors requires regular evaluation to determine appropriate maintenance priorities. This study aims to evaluate the pavement condition of Jalan Guru Bangkol, Mataram City, using the Surface Distress Index (SDI) method as a basis for determining road maintenance priorities. The study used a descriptive quantitative approach through a visual survey of the road surface condition. The 1.25 km road section was divided into 13 observation segments with 100-meter intervals. Primary data were obtained through direct observation of the parameters of crack area, crack width, number of potholes, and wheel groove depth (rutting), then analyzed based on the SDI guidelines of the Directorate General of Highways. The results showed that of the 13 observed segments, 10 segments (76.92%) were in good condition, 1 segment (7.69%) was in moderate condition, and 2 segments (15.39%) were in a condition of slight damage, while no segments were found with severe damage. Based on the SDI value classification, most road sections are recommended for routine maintenance, while one segment requires periodic maintenance and two segments require road rehabilitation. The research results show that the SDI method is able to provide a systematic evaluation of pavement conditions and supports the determination of more objective and effective maintenance priorities as a basis for decision making in urban road infrastructure management.
