Abstract

The using of teaching materials based on local wisdom is still limited. This study aimed to develop a pocketbook based on research results of antimicrobial medicinal plants from Muko-muko and Serawai ethnics as supplementary teaching materials for senior high school students. This study was Research and Development (R&D) model by Sugiyono that consisted of five stages, namely: potential and problems analysis, data collection, product design, design validation, and design correction. The designed pocketbook was validated by learning source expert and material expert. The data obtained  were analyzed using statistical descriptive (percentage). The validation data score from learning source expert was 93.4% and material expert was 98.86% which were recognized as ‘very good’. Thus the developed pocketbook is valid as a supplementary teaching materials in biology learning for senior high school.

Abstract

Kemuning (Murraya paniculata L) is a shrub growing in tropical climates and wildly in bushland or forest. The local people of Serawai ethnicin Bengkulu often use kemuning leaves as a traditional medicine for asthma disease. . This study aims to analyze the potential and benefits of Kemuning (Muraya paniculata L) leaves as a traditional medicine forasthma disease. This research is a descriptive study by using interview method with Snow ball sampling techniques. The results showed that Murraya paniculata leaves have been empirically proven to treat asthma in Serawai tribe community. The leaves are processed by squeezing, filtering, then drinking or smearing it on the chest. The presence of flavonoids in Murraya paniculata leaves thought have the effect of reducing asthma. Murraya paniculata  leaves have potential to be developed as an asthma medicine, but further research is needed before using in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract

Sustainable production of renewable energy is being a crucial problem, since fuel demand in Indonesia rises annually while the production decreases. Microalgae have been suggested as a potential feedstock for biofuel production. This research was a preliminary study to identified microalgal culture from water of peat swamp, and probe its potential as biodiesel feedstock.  Microalgal identification was conducted by morphological observation using microscope, while potential as biodiesel was probed by detection using Nile Red staining and supported by literature study. This research has identified 19 species of microalgae from culture, which were consisting of 16 species were Chlorophyceae and 3 species were Bacillariophyceae. Microalgae that  potentially to be developed biodiesel feedstock were Cyclotella atomus, Cyclotella sp, Nitzschia sp, Chlorella sp, Desmodesmus sp, Chlorella ellipsoida and Chlorella vulgaris.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the inhibition of T. cacao L. leaf extract on the growth of E. coli bacteria and the correlation between the concentration of T. cacao L. leaf extract and the formed E. coli inhibition zone. The method used is experimental post-test only control design using Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The inhibition zone of T. cacao L. leaves against E. coli was tested using the disc diffusion method with six treatments (concentration 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, positive control and negative control) repeated five times. The results showed that the diameter of the inhibition zone of the leaf extract of T. cacao L. against E.coli was at intervals of 5-10 mm and was included in the category of moderate inhibition, but the results of Duncan's test showed that there was no significant difference between the inhibition zones formed at concentrations 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. In conclusion, the leaves of T. cacao L. were less effective in inhibiting the growth of E. Coli, but the leaf extract of T. cacao L. was positively correlated with the inhibition zone formed. Abstract

This study aims to determine the diversity of microalgae and their relationship with water quality in the Air Lais River. The method used is a survey method. The results showed that there were 28 species of microalgae consisting of 7 divisions. The abundance of microalgae at the upstream station was 52 ind/ml, the middle station was 50 ind/ml and the downstream station was 115 ind/ml. The microalgae diversity index at each station was 2.2; 2.2; and 2.59, with a moderate level of diversity criteria. The microalgae dominance index was in the low dominance criteria, with the value of each station being 0.21; 0.20; and 0.14. In conclusion, the condition of the Air Lais River is still relatively clean and shows a normal tolerance range for microalgae life. Keywords: Diversity, Microalgae, Lais Water River

Abstract

Nowadays, young generation's knowledge about local wisdom in utilizing medicinal plants is decreasing. This study aimed to develop a pocketbook of antimicrobial medicinal plants based on local wisdom of the Serawai and Muko-Muko tribes (PAMP-LWSMT) in Bengkulu Province-Indonesia and its effectiveness in improving students' knowledge about the utilization of plants as traditional medicine (UPTM). This type of research was a research and development (R&D) of Sugiyono, it had 10 stages. Five stages have been conducted and published in 2018 and will be continued to the last five stages, namely product trials, product revision, trial use, product revision, and mass production. The results showed that 1) pocketbooks had a good response for students and teachers. It can be identified from averaged score of teacher response (75,33) and average score of children's response (65,31) 2). Pocketbook was quite effective to increase students’ knowledge about the utilization of plants as traditional medicine. It can be shown from N-gain value (0.5413). Value of Sig. (2-tailed) was 0,000 it means there was a significant difference before and after using a pocketbook. Through the development and effectiveness of pocketbooks, it can preserve the values of the local wisdom of the Serawai and Muko-Muko tribes in utilizing plants as medicine. This pocketbook is recommended to be used widely as a learning resource for high school students in various districts in Bengkulu Province so that students' knowledge can develop.
