Abstract

Analysis of Epistemological Obstacles Experienced by Indonesian Junior High School Students in Solving Mathematical Literacy Problems viewed from Algebraic Thinking Skills. The low level of mathematical literacy skills can happen due to learning obstacles. There are various learning obstacles, one of which arises from students' errors or limitations in understanding a particular concept and context of the material, known as epistemological obstacles. One effort to improve mathematical literacy skills is by optimizing algebraic thinking abilities. This is why algebraic thinking is considered a focus of review. However, many students who transition from concrete to abstract thinking experience obstacles in algebraic thinking, including students in grade VIII. This study aims to analyze the epistemological obstacles junior high school students face in solving mathematical literacy problems from the perspective of their algebraic thinking skills. The research method is descriptive qualitative with research subjects of grade VIII junior high schools in Jaten who were then selected two students from each group of high, medium, and low algebraic thinking. The research data includes algebraic thinking ability tests, mathematical literacy tests, and interviews. The study results show that students with medium and low algebraic thinking abilities experienced epistemological obstacles in solving mathematical literacy problems. In contrast, students with high algebraic thinking abilities did not have experienced epistemological obtacles. This study concluded that there are differences in the characteristics of epistemological obstacles between students in the medium and low algebraic thinking ability groups, as identified by the indicators of epistemological obstacles. Keywords: epistemological obstacles, mathematical literacy, algebraic thinkingDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202495

Abstract

This study aims to describe the effectiveness of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) as a differentiated learning approach in mathematics. CRT is important to implement because it accommodates students' diverse cultural backgrounds, thus increasing learning participation and understanding. This study used a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest type pre-experiment design. The research subject was class VIII B of SMP Negeri 15 Surakarta, which was selected by simple random sampling from eight parallel classes. The treatment was conducted in three meetings. The research instruments included learning outcome tests, student activity observation sheets, and student response questionnaires. The results of descriptive analysis showed that the average score of learning outcomes increased from 57.73 to 85.30. The single-sample t-test showed this improvement was statistically significant at the 0.05 significance level. Student activities showed positive engagement of 88.66%, while negative engagement amounted to 6.70%. More than 70% of students responded positively to the CRT implementation. The results of this study show that the CRT approach is efficacious in improving learning outcomes, student engagement, and response, and is relevant to be applied in culturally diverse classrooms.

Abstract

Numeracy is an important skill that enables students to understand mathematical concepts and solve problems in real-life contexts. According to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), numeracy refers to the ability to use, interpret, and communicate mathematical information in everyday contexts. However, the 2022 PISA results show that Indonesia's average score in numeracy has declined compared to 2018 (OECD, 2023). This indicates that many students still struggle with the stages of thinking processes needed to solve mathematical problems correctly. This study aims to systematically examine the various factors that influence, content, and variations in students' thinking processes in numeracy. This research uses the PRISMA 2020 method by analysing 22 articles selected from the range of 2020-2024. The results showed that the most studied variations included mathematical thinking processes, mathematical literacy thinking processes, and thinking processes in solving problems. Algebra is the most researched content, because it has a framework that includes detailed stages in the thinking process, such as information identification, symbolic representation, and concept application. The most reviewed factors in the thinking process are mathematical ability and cognitive style. Students with high mathematical ability are more systematic in thinking, while students with medium and low ability tend to need scaffolding. Students with field independent cognitive style showed higher creativity than field dependent students.

Abstract

The revitalization of green tea production technology plays a pivotal role in fostering the enhancement of the quality and competitiveness of local products in Indonesia. Although Indonesia's green tea export earnings reached 69.01 million USD in 2023, this figure remains low compared to neighboring countries. Competitive trade in the global tea market requires improved production processing technology. This paper explains how the application of IoT-based green tea rolling technology can empower Poktan communities and align with the government's revitalization program. This community empowerment method is divided into six stages: 1). Preparation and production planning 2) Tool and Innovation Concept Development, 3) Innovation design, 4) Implementation, 5) Marketing digitalization, 6) Evaluation. This step is a breakthrough that will allow us to continue to be competitive by meeting the needs of consumers globally. Furthermore, the use of modern technology will help achieve SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure), and SDG 13 (climate action) in the future.

Abstract

Numeracy skills and academic achievement are key indicators of student educational success and are influenced by both cognitive and non-cognitive factors. However, previous studies have often examined logical–mathematical intelligence and a growth mindset separately, so empirical evidence on their combined role in influencing numeracy skills and academic achievement remains limited. Therefore, this study investigates the influence of logical–mathematical intelligence and growth mindset, both independently and interactively, on students’ numeracy skills and academic achievement. This study employed an exploratory quantitative factorial design using a two-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) approach, involving a small sample of 30 ninth-grade students from a public junior high school in Jepara, Indonesia, which requires cautious interpretation of the findings. The results indicate that logical–mathematical intelligence has a significant effect on students’ numeracy skills (p < .001), while growth mindset significantly affects students’ academic achievement (p = .02). However, there is no significant interaction between logical–mathematical intelligence and growth mindset on both dependent variables (p = .937). Based on the results, these findings indicate that logical–mathematical intelligence and growth mindset are independently associated with different learning outcomes, rather than exerting a combined or interactive effect.

Abstract

Mathematics learning requires instructional media that can help students understand abstract concept in a more meaningful and engaging way. One medium that has attracted increasing attention is pop-up book. Although numerous studies have investigated the use of pop-up books in mathematics education, the finding remain scattered across different educational levels, mathematical topics, and research approaches.  Therefore, a comprehensive synthesis is needed to prove a clearer understanding of research trends and finding in this area.  This study aims to analyze the implementation of pop-up book in mathematics learning through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The review was conducted using the PRISMA framework. Data were collected from Scopus, Semantic Scholar, and Google Scholar, with publication period between 2016 and 2025.  After the screening process, 23 articles met the established criteria.  The findings indicate that pop-up book are most frequently applied in geometry topics, especially at the elementary and junior high school levels.   Research and Development (R & D) was the most commonly used approach with pop-up book primarily serving as instructional media. Overall, the reviewed studies reported positive effects on students’ learning motivation, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills, mathematics communication, and learning achievement.  In conclusion, pop-up book have considerable potential to support mathematics learning across various topics and educational levels.  However, existing studies mainly focus on teacher developed media, while students ‘involvement in designing and creating pop-up book remain largely unexplored. Future research should investigate student-centered approaches that integrate pop-up book creation into mathematics learning.

Abstract

The availability of mathematics textbooks that are not appropriate can influence students' low academic performance. This research aims to analyze school mathematics teaching materials from a praxeological perspective, where the researcher seeks to understand how students engage with the material presented in the teaching materials, how they make decisions about which problems to solve, and how the design and content of textbooks affect their learning outcomes. This implements the interpretive paradigm in didactical design research (DDR). This study will involve three principal stages in the data analysis procedure. Through document studies (in phenomenologically designed qualitative research) on the Indonesian school mathematics teaching materials version of the Merdeka Curriculum, the results obtained are: The task component (T) in the material on large numbers uses operational techniques; The technique component (τ) is appropriate because the information conveyed in each meeting has continuity; The technology component (θ) is not yet appropriate, so improvements and enhancements are needed in the development of information and communication technology-based learning media; and The theory component (Θ) is not yet fully aligned with constructivist theory, where students can build knowledge based on their respective experiences. The praxeological study of this teaching module provides a new perspective on how task design plays an important role in making the presentation of material more acceptable to students.
