Abstract

Equivalent fraction is a sub-topic of fractions that highly contributes to explaining the basic concepts of fractions. However, this topic is one of the most challenging topics for students as it involves an advanced and formal concept and various representations. This study aims to present the preliminary result of the learning trajectory on equivalent fractions. This design research consisted of three stages: preparation, implementation, and retrospective analysis. The learning trajectory in the form of a hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) was designed in the context of measuring cups. The data was collected through documentation, interviews, and class observations. The HLT was implemented to investigate students’ actual learning trajectories. The findings showed that the measuring cup context assists students to easily perceive those different fractions may have the same quantity (equivalent fractions). The learning trajectory consists of two activities. The first one aims to introduce a measurement concept of fractions to students. The second one aims to help students construct the concept of equivalent fractions. Finally, the study findings contribute to further development of learning trajectory on equivalent fractions.

Abstract

Computational thinking is a crucial skill that facilitates problem-solving for students. Recognizing its importance, the PISA 2021 framework incorporates computational thinking to enhance problem-solving and mathematical reasoning abilities. However, the proficiency of students in computational thinking remains low in Indonesia due to its infrequent integration into the curriculum. This study aims to evaluate students' computational thinking skills based on the indicators of decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking following the implementation of computational thinking-based learning using the Problem-based Learning (PBL) model, specifically on integer addition and subtraction. The research involved 28 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 54 Palembang during the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through tests and interviews. The findings indicate that students' computational thinking skills are at a medium level. Furthermore, the study examines students' abilities concerning specific computational thinking indicators. It underscores the impact of computational thinking-based learning in enhancing students' ability to design and develop structured and systematic problem-solving strategies.

Abstract

Computational Thinking (CT) has emerged as a fundamental skill in mathematical problem-solving, fostering logical reasoning and structured approaches to tackling complex problems. Despite its significance, the integration of CT in mathematics education, particularly in secondary school curricula, remains insufficiently explored, leading to a gap in understanding students' proficiency in CT skills. This study aims to investigate the CT abilities of seventh-grade students in solving social arithmetic problems based on four key CT indicators: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking. Data were collected through a set of problem-solving tasks designed to assess each indicator comprehensively. The findings reveal that 25% of students demonstrate high CT proficiency (score >78.12), 52% exhibit medium proficiency (score between 17.78 and 78.12), and 23% fall into the low category (score <17.78). The mean scores for each CT indicator are as follows: decomposition (53), pattern recognition (46), abstraction (40), and algorithmic thinking (53), with abstraction emerging as the weakest area. These results indicate that the majority of students possess only a moderate level of CT competence, particularly struggling with abstraction, which involves identifying critical information and disregarding extraneous details. The study underscores the necessity of developing instructional strategies that enhance students' CT skills, particularly in pattern recognition and abstraction, to foster deeper mathematical understanding and problem-solving capabilities. The findings contribute

Abstract

Limit is the main topic in calculus which is already introduced and thought to students since senior high school level. However, quite a lot of students find difficult to learn and to understand limit at the first year of university level. This article discusses how to identify student’s procedural-knowledge and conceptual- understanding about limit. The method used to identify student’s procedural-knowledge and conceptual- understanding about limit was by giving a test to students about limit problems. The problems were designed so simple in order to avoid mistakes that students made because of the difficulty of questions. The finding of test results show that there were some students whom could answer questions about limit procedurally well, but they had problem to solve questions about limit related to conceptual understanding. This problem could be caused by the learning about limit when they were at senior high school level only focused on how to solve questions about limit procedural.DOI: 10.22342/jpm.13.1.6706.73-82

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0, which makes the internet its backbone, has accelerated the process due to the Covid-19 pandemic which forced citizens to shift all their activities to the digital world, including the involvement of citizens in responding to public discourse. Citizens' public discourses that previously took place in real public spaces have now shifted to digital spaces, one of which is social media. To bridge these changes, a conceptualization of civic engagement is needed through a digital platform. The online citizen involvement was later referred to as online civic engagement, namely civic engagement activities specifically carried out by digital citizens involving several types of digital media, one of which is social media. This literature study provides a clearer picture of the forms of community interaction through social media that go beyond what is known as “slacktivism”. When many democracies are faced with the problem of decreasing citizen participation in politics, social media comes with a new form of civic interaction with what is meant by online civic engagement.
