Abstract

Background: The sexual orientation of students is influenced by various factors. Islamic boarding school is one of the places where risky sexual orientation can occur among students. This behaviour must be addressed so that it does not cause more severe health impacts. Objective: This study aims to explore the risk and protective factors of sexual orientation from the experiences of students at Islamic Boarding School in Jember Indonesia. Methods: This study was a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. There were 16 informants consisting of key informants, main informants, and additional informants. The research informants were selected using the snowball sampling techniques. In-depth interviews were conducted to study the risk and protective factors of sexual orientation among Islamic Boarding School students in Jember, Indonesia. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Results: The study showed that, in terms of risk factors, all informants had been victims of bullying because of a negative social, which made the informants feel depressed. All informants experienced mental trauma due to stigma and discrimination which caused the informants to feel depressed. The presence of protective factors was considered beneficial for individuals because this condition transformed negative emotional perceptions into positive perceptions, thereby strengthening personal development and resilience. The influence of religion and internal factors have a strong influence on making individuals have heterosexual desires and helping them recover from the bad effects experienced during periods of homosexual behaviour. Conclusion: Factors that influence students’ sexual orientation towards homosexuality include discrimination, weak individual resilience, and oppression. Based on this, assistance is needed to help students with homosexual orientation maintain a stable condition.

Abstract

Diarrhea is a disease that is ranked second as the cause of death among children under five in the world. One of the important impacts of diarrhea in toddlers is related to malnutrition and growth failure, specifically stunting. Prolonged diarrhea can cause a decrease in nutritional status, especially in children under two years of age. Diarrhea prevention interventions are carried out through empowerment programs involving educational and coercive activities using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method. PRA is an empowerment approach and technique that involves the community during program planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation activities. The material in the empowerment program is related to diarrhea, including the definition of diarrhea, the causes of diarrhea, and how to prevent diarrhea. This material is listed in the Cerdik Module, which includes menus with local ingredients. The empowerment program consists of two activities, namely diarrhea prevention education carried out by diarrhea care cadres and locally-based Supplemental Food Complementary Demonstration (PMT) activities. The activity was attended by 24 participants, namely mothers with children under five. Based on the results, it is known that the pre-test and post-test showed an increase in knowledge by 5.4%, as evidenced by the average pre-test score of 7.3 and the average post-test score of 7.7. Cooperation is needed between the government, community, and stakeholders related to diarrhea prevention efforts so that a diarrhea-free Sabrang Village can be realized.

Abstract

Background: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) face numerous physical and psychological challenges that often lead to the emergence of negative emotional states. These emotional difficulties are frequently exacerbated by social stigma and discrimination, which can lead to diminished quality of life, decreased treatment adherence, and social withdrawal. Understanding how PLWHA manage their emotional responses is critical in developing supportive interventions. Objective: This study aims to analyze the factors that influence emotional regulation among PLWHA, with a focus on understanding the role of social and environmental support systems. By identifying key influences, the study seeks to inform strategies that foster better mental health outcomes in this vulnerable population. Methods: A qualitative case study approach was employed to obtain a deep understanding of the emotional experiences of PLWHA. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 1 key informant, 8 PLWHA informants, and 5 additional informants including close family members and peers. Furthermore, Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted with 6 peer companions to enrich the data and validate individual findings. Thematic content analysis was used to identify recurring patterns and themes across the data. Result: Emotional regulation among PLWHA is significantly influenced by environmental acceptance and the availability of social support, particularly from family and peer companions. Positive social interactions contribute to increased motivation to pursue medical treatment and improve life satisfaction. On the other hand, ongoing stigma and discrimination were found to trigger negative emotional responses, including anxiety, shame, and social isolation. Conclusion: Emotional regulation in PLWHA is shaped by multiple interconnected factors, such as environmental support, traumatic past experiences, and physical changes associated with the illness. Interventions that focus on reducing societal stigma and enhancing the role of family and peer support are essential to promote resilience and positive emotional well-being among PLWHA.

Abstract

Background: For more than three decades, the HIV epidemic in Indonesia has continued to grow and has primarily affected men who have sex with men (MSM). The high prevalence of HIV is inseparable from triggering stigma and discrimination. This hampers prevention and treatment, and encourages many MSM in Indonesia to hide their identity and sexual orientation, so that difficulties in accessing HIV prevention and treatment services and increase the risk of HIV transmission. Self-disclosure is an important aspect for MSM to help prevent HIV transmission and improve treatment adherence. Methods: This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach using snowball sampling. Data were collected via in-depth interviews and analyzed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method to explore the dynamics of self-disclosure through the lens of the Johari Window theory, focusing on hidden and blind areas. Results: The findings reveal that MSM often conceal their sexual orientation and HIV status due to fear of stigma and discrimination, especially from family, workplace, and social circles representing the hidden area. Meanwhile, the blind area emerges when the environment perceives MSM's identity without explicit disclosure, sometimes offering support but also reinforcing societal pressure. These dynamics significantly affect MSM's willingness to seek help and disclose critical information necessary for HIV prevention. Conclusion: Self-disclosure among MSM is significantly influenced by stigma, discrimination, and the social environment which either supports or hinders their openness. To address this, inclusive and stigma-reducing strategies are urgently needed, particularly within healthcare services.

Abstract

Abnormal vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age becomes worse if it is not treated immediately because it can cause ectopic pregnancy and infertility. The low level of knowledge on hygiene of the reproductive organs often results in women ignoring it and assuming that vaginal discharge is a common health problem. The aim of the study was to analyze the personal hygiene behavior of women of childbearing age in preventing leucorrhoea in the Muncar coastal area, Banyuwangi Regency. This type of research is a qualitative method using a case study approach (Case Studies). Informants in this study amounted to 30 people. The results showed that most of the main informants had knowledge about the meaning of leucorrhoea, its causes, signs and symptoms, and prevention of leucorrhoea. The main informants get knowledge through social media, health workers, and the people closest to them. A small number of key informants did not know about the meaning of leucorrhoea, its causes, signs and symptoms, and prevention of leucorrhoea due to a lack of health information from health workers, social media and close people. Suggestions for women of childbearing age should improve personal hygiene for themselves. Be more open and communicate well about vaginal discharge with health workers, family and close friends.

Abstract

ntroduction: This study aimed to explore the policies and institutional factors influencing the fulfillment of prisoners’ sexual needs in Indonesia, particularly within the context of correctional health. With overcrowding in Indonesian prisons reaching as high as 370%, such as in the Class IIA Jember Penitentiary, and the lack of clear regulations addressing sexual rights, the objective was to examine behavioral drivers and systemic gaps using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework to address unmet needs and prevent deviant sexual behavior. The TPB guided a deductive thematic analysis. Attitudes were operationalized as participants’ beliefs about outcomes, subjective norms as perceived social approval or pressure, and perceived behavioral control as perceived capacity/resources to enact or resist sexual behavior. Methods: This exploratory qualitative study was conducted at the Class IIA Jember Correctional Facility in 2022. A total of 15 informants were recruited using a snowball sampling technique, including the Head of the Correctional Facility, prison officers, health workers, and inmates. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically with deductive approach. Transcripts underwent verbatim transcription, TPB-focused line-by-line coding, coding matrices, and credibility checks (independent double-coding and member validation).Ethical approval was obtained from 173/KEPK/FKM-UNEJ/IV/2022 and both verbal and written informed consent were secured from all participants. Results: The primary findings indicated that subjective norms and perceived behavioral control significantly influenced prisoners' intentions to engage in risky sexual behavior. Contributing factors included ambiguous regulations on sexual health education and inmate guidance, the suboptimal implementation of assimilation and reintegration policies, and the absence of a formal conjugal visit program. These regulatory shortcomings may increase the risk of sexually transmitted disease transmission within the prison environment. Conclusion: This study contributes to the understanding of sexual health policy implementation within Indonesian correctional institutions by identifying key regulatory and systemic deficiencies. It offers critical insights into how institutional support, or its absence, influences inmates’ health-related behaviors. Future research should focus on developing and implementing policies that safeguard prisoners’ sexual health rights, thereby advancing knowledge in the fields of correctional health and human rights.

Abstract

Background: Poskestrens' cadres as the ambassador in improving Clean and Healthy Life Behavior (CHLB) of the students at boarding school. They also could plan and solve the problems that happened at boarding using any available potential resources. However, the CHLB survey at boarding schools conducted by cadres shows that most students at boarding were not interested in doing the CHLB. This study analyses the determinant factors of Poskestren cadres' behaviour to increase CHLB practice at Islamic boarding schools.Method: This research was quantitative and analytical research with a cross-sectional approach. Sixty-seven Poskestren cadres were selected in this study by using a stratified proportional random sampling technique. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate. Results: The results show that 52.2% of Poskestren cadres had good behavior in improving CHLB at Islamic boarding schools, and the remaining 48.8 were still less behaviour. The Chi-Square statistical test shows no significant relationship between age, education, facilities, infrastructure availability, and the Poskestren cadres' behaviour. However, there was a significant relationship between knowledge, attitudes, encouragement from health workers, motivation from the boarding school caregivers, and the Poskestren cadres' behaviour. The most substantial relationship of this study was the knowledge of Poskestren cadres (p value = 0.000, OR = 16,500). This study suggests that health workers' encouragement by providing virtual-based counseling to the cadres needs to be conducted to improve the Poskestrens cadres' knowledge and attitudes to CHLB.
