Abstract

Abstract

Background Malnutrition among children under five remains a major public health concern, including in semi-urban areas such as Klapanunggal, Bogor. Inadequate dietary intake may contribute to underweight, wasting, low hemoglobin concentration, and anemia. This study evaluated changes in maternal nutrition knowledge, child anthropometric indicators, and hemoglobin concentration following nutrition education and local food-based supplementary feeding. Methods A one-group pre–post intervention study involved 37 children aged 6–59 months with underweight or wasting. Mothers received nutrition education, while children received local food-based supplementary feeding for 28 days in the underweight group and 56 days in the wasting group. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls, anthropometric measurements, and capillary hemoglobin testing. Normality of paired differences was assessed using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Paired-samples t-tests were used for normally distributed data, while Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used for non-normally distributed data. Results Maternal nutrition knowledge, weight-for-height z-scores, weight-for-age z-scores, and hemoglobin concentration increased significantly after the intervention. However, information on concurrent iron supplementation, infection treatment, and other clinical interventions was not systematically recorded. Conclusions Nutrition education and local food-based supplementary feeding were associated with improved maternal nutrition knowledge and child anthropometric indicators. The increase in hemoglobin concentration should be interpreted cautiously because potential concurrent supplementation and clinical treatment were not documented or controlled.

Abstract

Background: Medical students often adopt lifestyles that contribute to decreased muscle mass and increased visceral fat accumulation, which can negatively impact vascular elasticity, a biomarker for the early detection of cardiovascular disease. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the association between the muscle mass to visceral fat ratio and vascular elasticity in medical students at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ). Methods: A cross-sectional design was conducted from November 2023 to January 2024 at UPNVJ. The sample consisted of 51 subjects who met the research criteria. The muscle-to-visceral fat (MVF) ratio was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), while vascular elasticity was assessed using the Accelerated Photo plethysmograph Analyzer SA-3000P. Results: The results revealed that 68.6% of the subjects had the lowest MVF ratio and 54.9% exhibited sub-optimal vascular elasticity. No differences were found in age, gender, physical activity, or eating habits between the vascular elasticity groups (p > 0.05). The Chi-square test revealed a significant association between the MVF ratio and vascular elasticity (p = 0.009; OR = 6.545; 95% CI = 1.7–24.9). Conclusion: Students with the lowest MVF ratio were found to be 6.54 times more likely to have sub-optimal vascular elasticity, compared to those with low and high MVF ratios, indicating an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. These findings underscore the importance of early preventive intervention aimed at optimizing body composition through targeted wellness programs. The implementation of nutritional education and structured physical activity initiatives, particularly in young adults, may play a critical role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract

Background: Medical students often consume high amounts of caffeine due to heavy academic demands and tend to be less physically active. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between caffeine consumption and physical activity with arterial elasticity in medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta in 2025. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 80 undergraduate medical students aged 18–23 years, recruited through consecutive sampling. Data on physical activity, caffeine consumption, and demographics were collected using validated questionnaires. Stress, sleep quality, and eating habits were assessed using the PSS-10, PSQI, and AFHC, respectively. Only healthy participants with low to moderate stress, good sleep quality, and healthy eating habits were included in this study. The SA-3000P Accelerated Photoplethysmography (APG) analyzer was used to assess arterial elasticity, and the results were categorized as suboptimal, normal, or optimal. Results: Suboptimal arterial elasticity was observed in 51.3% of participants. Caffeine consumption was moderate in most participants (61.3%), while physical activity levels were moderate in 57.5% of the participants. The Chi-square test showed a significant association between caffeine consumption and arterial elasticity (p = 0.012), whereas physical activity showed no significant association (p = 0.093). Conclusions: High caffeine consumption was associated with reduced arterial elasticity in medical students, whereas physical activity was not significantly associated. These findings suggest a potential association between caffeine intake and vascular health in young adults.

Abstract

Background : Medical students commonly consume ultra-processed foods (UPFs) because of demanding academic schedules. Excessive UPF consumption has been associated with vascular dysfunction, but evidence on arterial elasticity in healthy young adults remains limited. Objective : This study investigated the association between UPF consumption and arterial elasticity among male medical students at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta. Methods : A cross-sectional study included 50 male medical students selected by simple random sampling. UPF consumption was assessed using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and analyzed with NutriSurvey software. Arterial elasticity was measured using an Accelerated Photoplethysmograph Analyzer SA-3000P. Participants were aged ≥18 years, non-smokers, and had no diabetes mellitus, hypertension, or alcohol consumption. Associations were analyzed using a Chi-square test. Results : Sugar intake from UPFs was significantly associated with arterial elasticity (p = 0.041; PR = 2,256; 95% CI = 1,153 – 4.406). In contrast, total energy, salt, and fat intake from UPFs were not significantly associated with arterial elasticity (p = 0.471, p = 0.990, and p = 0.763, respectively). Conclusions : Higher sugar intake from UPFs, rather than total energy, salt, or fat intake from UPFs, was associated with arterial elasticity. Limiting sugar intake from UPFs may help preserve vascular health in young adults.

Abstract

Depression is a serious mental health problem among older adults, especially in social care facilities. This study examines the hypothesis that cognitive function and neuroticism personality are associated with depression among older adults residing in a nursing home, a relationship that remains rarely investigated within the Indonesian institutional context. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 38 older adults aged 60 to 85 years, selected from an initial population of 373 residents through a total sampling approach after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Depression was measured using the GDS-15. Cognitive function was measured using the MoCA-Ina. Neuroticism personality was measured using the BFI-2. Bivariate associations were assessed using Pearson's correlation test. This study found that the majority of respondents did not experience depression (65.8%), although the mean cognitive function score was below the normal threshold (18.58 ± 6.77). There was no significant relationship between cognitive function and depression levels (r = -0.038; 95% CI -0.353 to 0.285; p = 0.821). There was a significant positive correlation between neuroticism personality and depression levels (r = 0.524; 95% CI 0.246 to 0.723; p < 0.001). In summary, neuroticism personality was significantly associated with depression level among institutionalized older adults, whereas cognitive function was not. Neuroticism may therefore be a more relevant psychological marker of depression risk than cognitive status in this population; further studies directly measuring psychosocial and spiritual variables are needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying the non-significant cognitive-depression association.
