Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has put extraordinary pressure on medical personnel, especially nurses who work in critical wards. They are faced with high health-related risks as well as constant psychological stress. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the level of spirituality of nurses and the level of burnout syndrome they experience during the pandemic. This research was conducted using a survey method and data collection through questionnaires (SWBS (Spiritual Well Being Scale) and MBI-HSS (Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Service Survey)) which were given to 55 nurses who work in critical rooms selected using total sampling techniques. Research data was analyzed using Chi-square with Fisher's Exact Test. The research results showed that almost all nurses had a high level of spirituality (85.5%) and the majority of nurses did not experience burnout syndrome (60.0%). The calculated statistical value obtained a sig (2-tiled) value of 0.007 (p<0.05) meaning that there is a significant relationship between the level of spirituality of nurses and the level of burnout syndrome they experience. Nurses with higher levels of spirituality tend to experience lower levels of burnout. This indicates that aspects of spirituality, such as strong beliefs and regular spiritual practices, act as protective factors in reducing the risk of burnout syndrome. Apart from that, it is also important to include a holistic approach that pays attention to spiritual aspects in care and support for nurses during pandemics and other critical situations.

Abstract

Families of patients with mental disorders frequently experience intolerance of uncertainty due to prolonged treatment, high caregiving burdens, and unpredictable patient behaviors. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Happy Spiritual Intervention on the intolerance to uncertainty among families of patients with mental disorders. A pre-post quasi-experimental study with a control group was carried out among families of patients undergoing treatment at Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Psychiatric Hospital in Semarang. Simple random sampling was applied to recruit a total of 50 respondents who were aged 18 years or older and had been cohabiting with the patients for more than five months. The intervention group received six 45-minute therapy sessions, while the control group received standard care. This study utilized the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale as research instrument. Data were collected using Google Forms, and subsequent analysis using a t-test was performed. The results revealed a significant difference in intolerance of uncertainty among families of patients with mental disorders after the intervention in both the intervention and control groups, with an effect size of 3.026 and a p-value of 0.000. This suggests that Happy Spiritual intervention effectively reduces the intolerance of uncertainty among families of patients with mental disorders.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacts students’ mental health. Most of them may experience depression. Due to restrictions and social distancing during the pandemic, counseling may not be applicable in detecting the problems. Therefore, an Islamic spiritual mindfulness-based application called DAHAGA is created in order to detect and reduce depression. It is believed that this innovative app could reduce mental health problems among students. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of DAHAGA on reducing depression among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a comparison group pretest/posttest design conducted from May to June 2020. Seventy students were selected using convenience sampling, of which 35 were assigned in an experimental group and a comparison group. The validated Indonesian Version-Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was used for data collection. Paired t-test and independent t-test were used for data analysis. Results: There was a significant effect of DAHAGA on depression (p < 0.001). The level of depression after intervention (mean 11.49, SD 4.49) was lower than it before the intervention (mean 17.20, SD 4.94). Additionally, there was a significant difference in depression level between the experimental and comparison groups after the intervention with a p-value of < 0.001. Conclusion: The DAHAGA is proven effective in reducing depression. Therefore, this study offers a new and innovative app that fits with the COVID-19 pandemic to help Muslim students maintain their health status. The findings also support Islamic spiritual mindfulness as a part of nursing interventions among psychiatric nurses to deal with mental health problems, especially depression.
