Abstract

The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has significantly transformed the academic world, particularly in how students complete their assignments. One of the most widely used technologies is ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot capable of generating text automatically. The use of ChatGPT in academic settings creates a dilemma between efficiency benefits and potential misuse, such as plagiarism and the decline of students’ critical thinking skills. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how Communication Science students at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) understand human-machine interaction in an academic context and the ethical implications that arise. The urgency of this research lies in the need for a deeper understanding of AI's impact on academic integrity, particularly in aspects of honesty and responsibility in assignment completion. This study employs a qualitative research method with a case study approach. The theoretical framework used is Human-Machine Communication (HMC), which examines human interaction with AI through three main dimensions: metaphysical, symbiotic, and relational. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 students from different semesters who actively use ChatGPT for academic tasks. The results indicate that students utilize ChatGPT for reference searches, assignment writing, and paraphrasing. However, there is a tendency not to verify the accuracy of the information provided by ChatGPT, posing a risk to academic validity. Furthermore, the study found ambiguity in students' understanding of academic ethics, where some still perceive using ChatGPT without attribution as acceptable. Further analysis reveals that students’ interactions with ChatGPT reflect a symbiotic relationship, in which AI is not merely a tool but also influences their academic thinking patterns and habits. This study concludes that while ChatGPT provides convenience in academic work, its use requires clear regulations and improved digital literacy. Students must develop a stronger understanding of academic ethics to responsibly integrate AI technology without compromising scientific integrity and originality. Additionally, educational institutions should consider policies regulating AI usage to prevent academic misconduct.

Abstract

The @txtdrberseragam Twitter account is a Twitter account that contains a variety of news, complaints, and frustrations about uniformed officers, including the police. Researcher found that this account may be influencing the public's perception of the police. This study aims to determine the cultivation process that occurs in the @txtdrberseragam Twitter account against the image of the police in society. The researcher is interested in conducting this research because social media has now become a staple for society, so it can influence the way people think, perceive, and behave. This study was conducted using a mixed method (mixed) with content analysis techniques and in-depth interviews with a number of informants. A total of 68 contents (tweets and retweets) of the @txtdrberseragam account posted from June 1 to 29, 2023 were taken as samples for analysis. Next, 11 followers of the account were selected using purposive sampling to be interviewed as informants. The researcher used the constructivism paradigm to seek out the possible realities that exist and understand how the process of someone's interpretation of something works. The result of the study is the fact that a subjective reality is formed in the eyes of the public who view the police as a bad figure. The existence of the @txtdrberseragam Twitter account directly influences public perception through the media exposure that occurs. In addition, there are other factors such as personal experience, the credibility of the information source, which also contribute to the formation of the existing subybjective reality.

Abstract

This study examines online gambling addiction among university students, focusing on the prevalence of online gambling sites among Generation Z. The background of this research is based on the negative impact of online gambling behavior on students’ real lives, which not only disrupts social norms but also affects their psychological well-being. To analyze this phenomenon, the study applies the Media Dependency Theory by Sandra Ball-Rokeach and Melvin DeFleur. This theory is used to understand how media influences perception, shapes thinking patterns, and fosters individual dependence on online gambling sites. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to identify the characteristics of online gambling sites, including various slot games offered and aggressive promotional strategies conducted by promoters or "hunters," both directly and through digital platforms. The findings reveal that online gambling has become normalized within student social culture, where it is perceived not only as a form of entertainment but also as part of daily social interactions. Additionally, the evident impacts on students’ lifestyles—such as disrupted sleep patterns, financial mismanagement, and dependence on loans—indicate an increasing level of addiction. This research contributes significantly to understanding the multifaceted impact of online gambling and its implications for students' lives at the cognitive, affective, and behavioral levels.
