Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Peliatan Traditional Village, Ubud, which relied heavily on tourism. The drastic drop in visitors triggered economic hardship and affected community health. Recognizing untapped local potential, this program introduced herbal plant cultivation and biopore technology as sustainable alternatives for improving health and livelihood. Objective: To build community capacity in cultivating herbal plants and managing household organic waste through biopores, thus supporting long-term health, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability.Method: The program involved 30 PKK (Family Welfare Movement) members through education on herbal plants, cultivation techniques, health applications, and hands-on biopore construction. Pre- and post-tests, along with field mentoring, were conducted to assess impact.Result: Participants’ knowledge increased by 35%. All created biopore holes at home, and 20% harvested compost within three months. The initiative also sparked interest in continuing herbal cultivation independently. Conclusion: Education on herbal use and biopore application proved effective in enhancing health awareness and environmental practices. This program represents an initial step toward post-pandemic village resilience based on local resourcesKeyword: COVID-19; community service; herbal plants; health; bio pore

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Cervical carcinoma is a malignant tumor that is most often found in the female reproductive system. Persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most important factor in the development of cervical carcinoma. The E6 and E7 oncoproteins in HPV inhibit the action of p53. As a result, p53 transcription and the apoptosis process are inhibited. Tumor budding has been extensively studied and established as a significant prognostic factor. This study aims to determine the relationship between p53 expression and the degree of tumor budding of cervical carcinoma.Method: This cross-sectional study used 50 paraffin blocks and secondary data from patients diagnosed with cervical carcinoma stored at BaliMed Denpasar Hospital. Paraffin blocks were then subjected to immunohistochemical examination to evaluate p53 expression and HE examination to evaluate the degree of tumor budding. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman test and linear regression test with the SPSS 25 software program. Results: The results showed that thirty-two subjects had low expression of p53, and 62,5% of them had high-grade tumor budding. The p53 expression is lower in cervical cancer with highgrade tumor budding compared with low-grade tumor budding (rs = -0.33). There are significant correlations between p53 expression and the degree of tumor budding in patients with cervical carcinoma (p = 0.018). A total of 50 samples that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed. The majority of patients were aged ≤ 50 years (58%) and had squamous cell carcinoma (90%) in the early stage (92%). Low p53 expression was found in 64% of samples. A significant negative correlation was found between p53 expression and tumor budding grade (p = 0.018; r = -0.333), which remained significant in multivariate analysis (p = 0.024; r² = -0.328), indicating that low p53 expression is associated with high-grade tumor budding. Conclusion: The p53 expression was significantly downregulated in cervical carcinoma with highgrade tumor budding. These findings indicate that tumor budding can be considered as a prognostic marker, but further research that sorts HPV dependent and HPV independent cervical carcinomas is needed.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the ways and objectives of the use of turmeric by Balinese, as well as the phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity of turmeric extract which is traditionally processed in Bali. Research methods: The method and purpose of utilizing turmeric were obtained through observation and interviews with 900 Balinese respondents. Quantitative phytochemical tests include starch, protein, flavonoid, tannin, phenol and vitamin C levels and qualitatively for the presence of triterpenes, steroids, alkaloids, and saponins. Antioxidant capacity was measured using the DPPH method. Findings: Through this research, we found there were only 36.8% of respondents had ever used turmeric as a traditional medicine. Utilization of turmeric was mostly in the form of loloh or traditional drinks. Phytochemical test results showed turmeric extract had 67.38% starch, 3.42% protein, 2709.39 mg/100 gr flavonoids, tannins 291.64 mg/100gr, phenol 1584.04 mg/100 gr, and vitamin C 0.06 mg/100gr. Qualitatively, turmeric extract contained triterpenes, alkaloids, and saponins, but did not contain steroids. The antioxidant capacity of turmeric extract was 70.9 mg/L GAEAC. Implications: Turmeric extract is a traditional medicine made from nature that is most commonly used by Balinese and very potential to be developed as an antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or other benefits that still need further investigation.

Abstract

Background:  Chronic kidney disease is one of the kidney disorders with a steadily increasing incidence rate. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of subtotal nephrectomy on the renal glomerulosclerosis in Mus musculus L. at 7, 14, and 28 days post-operation. Methods: This true-experimental study with a randomized post-test-only control group design used 16 white mice divided into four treatment groups (SO, SN7, SN14, and SN28). Kidney specimens were stained using Hematoxylin-Eosin and imaged to assess the glomerulosclerosis index. The results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA.Results:  The findings showed that glomerulosclerosis could be observed as early as 7 days post-procedure. The highest score was found in the SN28 group (3.55 ± 0.129). A significant difference was observed between the SO and SN7, SN14, and SN28 groups (p 0.05). Significant differences were also found between the SN7 and SN14 and SN28 groups (p 0.05), while no significant difference was observed between the SN14 and SN28 groups. Conclusions: These results indicate that subtotal nephrectomy can induce glomerulosclerosis as early as day seven post-operation. The highest glomerulosclerosis index was observed on day 28, although statistically, it did not differ significantly from the index on day 14.
