Abstract

This study evaluated how effectively the English Intensive Course book supports non‑English major students at the Islamic State University of Jember, focusing on its alignment with Cunningsworth’s eight evaluation criteria. An explanatory mixed‑methods design combined a Likert‑scale questionnaire (n = 20 students, 2 tutors) with semi‑structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while interview transcripts underwent thematic coding to triangulate and enrich survey findings. Overall mean scores ranged from 3.22 to 3.72 (4‑point scale), indicating strong agreement that the book meets program aims, offers well‑sequenced language content, and covers the four skills. Participants praised the grammar‑driven progression and integration of Islamic themes. Key weaknesses were the absence of answer keys, limited listening‑speaking tasks, and scarce multimedia support. Tutors also reported insufficient pedagogical guidance in the teacher’s manual. It provides actionable recommendations, embedding feedback mechanisms, metacognitive study‑skills training, and QR‑linked audio resources, that can inform future textbook design for intensive language programs in similar settings.

Abstract

Intercultural competence is needed in the global era, where people easily interact with people from other countries. This competence is also important for teachers, as they need to transfer it to their students. Folktales are literary works that can enhance intercultural competence as they reflect a particular culture. This study aims to reveal pre-service teachers’ perspectives on reading and comparing folktales from various countries to enhance their intercultural competence using reader-response theory. The qualitative design is employed in this study by analyzing pre-service narrative reflections. This study involves 20 pre-service teachers who took Prose for English Language Education class. This study found that pre-service teachers consider that they could widen their cultural knowledge by reading and comparing folktales from various countries. Participants reported gaining insights into different cultural beliefs, values, and ways of life, recognizing universal moral values embedded in folktales, and appreciating the didactic and imaginative qualities of these narratives. The comparative approach facilitated critical thinking by enabling them to identify both similarities and differences across cultures, thus deepening their intercultural understanding. Implication of this reseach, this study encourages curriculum developers and teacher educators to integrate diverse folktales into language education programs to support the goals of the emancipated curriculum, which emphasizes intercultural understanding.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the "little woman" in Anton Chekhov’s short stories, focusing on the interplay of gender roles and family values in 19th century Russian society. Through a literary sociology approach, the analysis explores how Chekhov’s female characters navigate societal expectations, internal conflicts, and familial responsibilities, offering a nuanced portrayal of women that diverges from traditional literary archetypes of his time. Unlike previous studies, which often generalize Chekhov’s female characters as passive or one-dimensional, this research highlights the complexity and agency of women in stories such as "The Lady with the Dog," "The Darling," and "The Schoolmistress." By analyzing narrative structure, character development, and social context, the study reveals how Chekhov critiques patriarchal norms while simultaneously depicting the emotional and psychological depth of his female protagonists. The findings demonstrate that Chekhov’s "little women" are not solely symbols of sacrifice or victimhood but are multifaceted individuals grappling with identity, autonomy, and societal constraints. The study’s novelty lies in its comparative framework, which situates Chekhov’s work alongside other literary traditions of the period, underscoring his unique contribution to the portrayal of women. By emphasizing the psychological and social dimensions of his female characters, this research contributes to literary gender studies and offers insights into the enduring relevance of Chekhov’s work in contemporary discussions on women’s roles in society. The findings invite further exploration of how classic literature can inform modern debates on gender equality and personal identity.

Abstract

This study examines Minangkabau culture, which adheres to a matrilineal kinship system, in which women, particularly mothers and wives, are seen as guardians of family honor and stability. This system is often considered a form of superiority in the social structure, but it does not necessarily guarantee the fulfillment of women's rights as free and independent human beings. This study aims to describe in depth the roles, struggles, and self-actualization processes of Minangkabau women facing restrictive cultural norms and relates them to Naomi Wolf's liberal feminist theory. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analyzes two novels by A. R. Rizal, Perempuan Batih (Women of the Batih) and Limpapeh (Limpapeh), as the primary data sources. In both literary works, female characters are depicted as more dominant in the domestic sphere as mothers and children, yet they carry a significant moral and social burden. They face challenges articulating their thoughts, choices, and aspirations in the public sphere, which tends to be limited by customary values. From Naomi Wolf's perspective, the struggles of Minangkabau women in these novels reflect an effort to liberate themselves from restrictive social constructs. These struggles include seeking education, making personal decisions, and having the courage to voice one's identity and will. This research concludes that while the matrilineal system provides symbolic space for women, inequality in the distribution of power and rights persists. Therefore, critical reflection and cultural transformation are crucial to building substantial gender equality within Minangkabau society.

Abstract

Kata kunci: syi’ir, esoteris, eskatologi, esoeskatologi.ABSTRACTThis study seeks to integrating the esoteric theory with the eschatological theory which contained in the classical manuscript "Syi’ir Kiyamat, Syi’ir Santri, Syi’ir Paras Nabi and Syi’ir Ahli Surga" is a collection of individuals belonging to the syi’ir genre texts in Coastal Javanese literature. This research itself is classified into library research with a philological approach as a scalpel, data collection techniques using descriptive methods and data analysis methods. Result of the research said that can be concluded that the Sufis and common people in walking the spiritual path thicken the practice and a series of purification of the soul filled with good deeds (repentance, khauf and raja ', zuhud, fakir, patient, blessing and muraqabah). The concept of eschatology in the form of grave torture and corpse encounters with the angel Mungkar Nakir (Alam Barzakh), the apocalypse riots experienced by humans in the form of the destruction of all layers of the earth's cosmos by the enormity of the apocalypse, continued telling about the events experienced by Mahsyar residents who find intercession, reckoning, Haq -Al-Adami, and regret by the infidel and the kufr Muslims. The red thread can be drawn that the study of Esoeschatology in the syi’ir text contributes to the existence of sufistic values and coherent eschatological values so as to have an effect on human existence on world life and ukhrawi. The results of the study stated the doctrine of eschatology as a reminder, more precisely the whole syi’ir utterance was made as a sufistic means to achieve mortal humanity with God and inclined to futuristic teachings. The relevance of the concept of world inequality and ukhrawi, that all deeds will be accounted for in the afterlife. Keywords: syi’ir, esoteric, eschatology, esoeschatologysyi’ir, esoteric, eschatology, esoeschatology
