Abstract

This Community Service Activity (PKM) aims to improve the reading literacy skills of junior high school students at Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur through training in quick and easy extensive reading techniques. The training was conducted by a team of lecturers from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Department of FBS Unesa, targeting 20 students from the Klang Malaysia Learning Center. The methods used included lectures, discussions, guided training, and mentoring. The training material covered the concepts of extensive reading, speed reading strategies, and effective text comprehension. Participants were given various texts on environmental themes and fables tailored to their age and abilities. After the reading training, students engaged in creative writing activities as a way to apply their reading comprehension skills. The results of the activity showed an increase in enthusiasm, motivation to read, and the ability to comprehend texts quickly. Most participants were able to produce creative writing based on their reading, although some students still required intensive mentoring due to their limited basic reading skills. The outputs of the activity included video documentation, mass media publications, scientific articles, and intellectual property rights certificates. Overall, this training was effective in fostering students' interest in reading and strengthening their literacy skills, and it is recommended to be continued with a sustainable mentoring program.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of fostering empathy in literature education amidst a modern social reality that tends to foster alienation and the decline of human harmony. Literature has the potential to serve as a reflective and therapeutic medium. However, its application in bibliotherapy-based learning integrated with a hermeneutic approach remains limited. This study aims to analyse the representation of empathy in the short story “Jakarta” by Totilawati Tjitrawasita and to examine its function as a bibliotherapy medium in literature education. The study engaged a qualitative approach with a hermeneutic interpretative method. Textual data were analysed through critical reading and interpretation based on the relationship between parts and the whole text. The findings indicate that this short story contains strong cognitive and affective empathy through the relationships between characters and the inner experiences of the main characters. The findings further illustrate that the character’s alienation represents social inequality and shifting values in modern society. Furthermore, this short story fulfills the stages of bibliotherapy, namely identification, catharsis, and insight, which demonstrate the reader’s emotional and reflective engagement. The study has demonstrated that the short story “Jakarta” can be harnessed as a bibliotherapy-based learning medium to enhance empathy and social awareness.

Abstract

This community service activity was motivated by the important role of PKK women in various community forums, such as neighborhood meetings, posyandu activities, counseling sessions, village meetings, and ceremonial events. In this context, the ability to prepare speech texts and speak in public is an essential skill so that messages can be delivered clearly, systematically, politely, and convincingly. However, some participants still experienced difficulties in organizing speech structures, choosing communicative language, managing nervousness, controlling their voice, and building interaction with the audience. This activity aimed to improve the understanding and skills of PKK women in Banjarsari Village, Banyuwangi, in preparing speech texts and delivering them in a structured, clear, and confident manner. The activity was conducted on Monday, May 11, 2026, in Banjarsari Village, Banyuwangi, involving 25 participants. The implementation method used a participatory-educative approach through interactive lectures, discussions, speech text writing practice, speech simulations, direct feedback, and reflection. The results showed that participants experienced an improvement in understanding the structure of speech texts, especially in distinguishing the opening, body, and closing sections. Participants also became more capable of selecting themes relevant to PKK activities, using more communicative language, and delivering speeches with better articulation, tempo, intonation, eye contact, and gestures. In addition, participants’ responses to the activity indicated a high level of acceptance because the materials were considered relevant, easy to understand, and beneficial for their social roles. Therefore, assistance in speech text preparation and public speaking practice proved effective as a strategy for empowering public communication skills among PKK women and has the potential to be replicated in other women’s communities.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji humor sebagai strategi estetik dan ideologis dalam merepresentasikan kehidupan urban dalam kumpulan cerpen Kisah-kisah Perdagangan Paling Gemilang karya Ben Sohib. Humor dipahami tidak sekadar sebagai unsur hiburan, melainkan sebagai mekanisme naratif yang mengungkap kontradiksi ruang kota, ketimpangan sosial, dan relasi kuasa yang dialami masyarakat kelas bawah urban. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis dokumen dan pembacaan naratif, serta memanfaatkan teori humor (superioritas, inkongruitas, dan pelepasan) dan teori sastra urban sebagai kerangka analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa humor dalam cerpen-cerpen Ben Sohib muncul dari ketidaksesuaian antara ruang yang dirancang secara normatif (conceived space) dan ruang yang dialami secara konkret oleh tokoh (perceived space). Ketegangan tersebut memproduksi situasi ironis, absurd, dan komikal yang berfungsi sebagai kritik implisit terhadap logika kapitalisme urban, otoritas simbolik, dan kegagalan ruang sosial menjalankan fungsi idealnya. Humor juga berperan sebagai mekanisme pelepasan ketegangan sosial dan pembongkar wibawa simbolik tanpa konfrontasi langsung. Dengan demikian, humor dalam karya Ben Sohib dapat dipahami sebagai medium reflektif yang efektif dalam menyingkap kompleksitas relasi ruang, kelas, dan kehidupan urban.
