Abstract

This research aims to determine the correlation between Self efficacy and English achievement at eleventh grade of MAN 2 Padang Panjang. Most of the students’ there still encounter problems in mastering English achievement. Some students’ English achievement were not satisfying yet, it was supported by the score of English test result. There were some of students had high Self efficacy in learning English. They felt confident and able to handle a task given by the teacher. However, their English achievement were still low from standardization of minimum criteria. It means some of them have high self efficacy but low in English achievement. Then the researcher was interested in doing research about The Correlation between Self Efficacy and English Achievement. This research used correlational reseach. The total population was 310 students, the sample was taken from 49 students who divided into two classes of XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2. Data obtained through a questionnaire about self efficacy that researcher distributed to students, while the students’ English achievement was collected from the English teacher’ document. Furthermore, the data collected will be processed using Pearson product moment formula and SPSS program. To test the hypothesis, researchers used the r-test and consulted the results with a t-table with ɑ = 0.05. Based on the result of the research, the correlation coefficient (rxy) between self efficacy and English achievement was 0.655. It means there was a positive direction between two variables. Then, the correlation between Self efficacy and English achievement is in the enough category. This can be seen from the calculated r value of 0.655 which is in the range of 0.40 – 0.70 with a enough category. In addition to test hypothesis, r-test is 0.655, while the r-table on df = 47 and ɑ = 0.05 is 0.288. It means that the r-test was bigger than the r-table. In other words, Ha is accepted, which states that there is a significant correlation between students’ Self efficacy and their English achievement at eleventh grade of MAN 2 Padang Panjang.

Abstract

This study investigated the way in which EFL teachers perceived the quality of translations made by students using Google Translate and digital dictionaries in actual classroom situations. While previous studies on the use of such tools have not sufficiently addressed the issue of evaluation from the perspective of the teacher, this study adopted an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. In this study, 25 students performed translations using the two instruments, and their translations were rated by two EFL teachers based on a Likert-scale rubric on accuracy, fluency, and appropriacy. Results from the quantitative analysis showed that translation through digital dictionaries was rated higher compared to Google Translate with a mean difference of 4.84 (t(24) = -9.333, p < .001, d = 1.87, very large effect). Analysis of themes in the interviews shed light on this result since both teachers rated accuracy as the first factor and appropriateness and fluency as the second and third factors, respectively. Google Translate was used due to its ability to produce fluent translation and draft texts but not contextually appropriate and accurate. Unlike the digital dictionary, which promoted greater cognitive processing and careful consideration in word choice, an alternative strategy is suggested: the use of Google Translate to produce a first draft and then the digital dictionary to ensure correct word choice and accurate semantics prior to final submission.

Abstract

The research was determined to find The Effect Of Using Scaffolding Strategies On Students’ Reading Comprehension Of Descriptive Text At The Seventh Grade Of Mtsn 6 Agam. It was done at MTSN 6 Agam. The researcher found some problems, there were the students had limited vocabulary. Then, the students found it difficult to comprehend reading texts, which made them become passive learners in learning English. And the methods used by teacher in teaching are still not able to overcome the problems faced by students. In this research, the design of the research used the quantitative approach with experimental research design by using pretest-post test experimental and control group design. The population was seventh grade. To determine the sample the researcher used simple purposive sampling. The sample were VII.4 as the experiment class and VII.2 as control class. The result of the research indicates that the score of students in post test was higher than the score of pre test experiment. From the data the mean score of pre-test was 49.38, and than the mean score of students post-test was 72.8. 1t’s means these results suggested that the scaffolding strategy significant reading comprehension learning. In addition, from the calculation of the data The significance value (Sig. (2-tailed)) of 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05, indicates that there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension scores in the post-test of the control group and the post-test of the experimental group at MTSN 6 Agam of seventh grade by using scaffolding strategies to the students taught using conventional method. It can be concluded that, scaffolding gave significant effect for students in their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify AI-generated content in student thesis writing and to investigate the phenomenon of dependence on ChatGPT among students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. The problem arises due to the rapid increase in the use of AI applications such as ChatGPT, while the campus does not yet have official guidelines regarding the use of AI in scientific work and there is a lack of student awareness in using AI responsibly. This situation raises ethical issues, including plagiarism, lack of honesty in acknowledging AI assistance, excessive dependence, and a decline in critical thinking skills. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the problems faced by students when using AI to complete writing assignments. This study used a quantitative descriptive research design, with data collected through document analysis of student theses involving the use of ChatGPT. Seventy-eight thesis documents were selected using purposive sampling techniques, and GPTZero was used as an AI detection tool to identify the level of AI involvement in student writing. The findings show that 75 out of 78 student documents indicate a high level of dependence on ChatGPT, while 3 documents show an acceptable level of AI usage. These results suggest that ChatGPT is often used not only for language refinement but also to generate substantial portions of academic texts, which may hinder students’ independent writing skills, originality, and critical thinking, as well as raise concerns about plagiarism and academic integrity.
