Abstract

Renggak (Amomum dealbatum Roxb.) is a species from the genus Amomum widely spread in Lombok. Traditionally, Amomum dealbatum Roxb. (renggak) is an antiseptic to treat rheumatism and arthritis. However, there was limited report of its phytochemical contents and biological activity of Amomum dealbatum Roxb. This study is preliminary research that aims to determine the phytochemical content of Amomum dealbatum Roxb. leaf decoction and its ethanolic extract. For this study, we used two different extraction methods. The fully powdered plant used for the successive extraction in the cold process for maceration methods was 800 g, and ethanols were used as solvents. We used a traditional receipt that utilized three fresh leaves in the decoction methods with 4,5 L of water as solvents. Phytochemical screening was carried out qualitatively by using the tube method with specific reagents for each compound. Important phytochemicals that were screened are flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and triterpenoids. Phytochemical screening from plant extract and decoction revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. Triterpenoid was only detected on the extract, and none of the extract and decoction have saponins and steroids. Our finding provides information about secondary metabolites that present in Amomum dealbatum Roxb. These phytochemical findings are essential and might be useful as quality parameters and to predicts its biological activities.

Abstract

Tekelan (C. odorata) contains phenolic compounds that play an important role in wound healing. The potential of C. odorata leaves as a wound healer needs to be developed through the formulation of ointment to facilitate its use. The selection of ointment base will affect the effectiveness. The aim of this study was to determine the physical stability of ointment from C. odorata leaf extract on varios types of bases. The ointment of C. odorata leaf extract with four types of bases, i.e hydrocarbon base (F1), adsorption base (F2), washable base (F3), and water soluble base (F4) were tested for stability using mechanichal method and freeze-thaw cycle. Mechanichal stability test was carried out by centrifuging the samples at a speed 3750 rpm for 30 menutes, while the freeze-thaw cycle test was carried out for 12 days (6 cycles). The physical properties of ointment i.e organoleptics, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and sticky power before and after the test were compared by ANOVA. The result of mechanichal test of ointment showed that there is no separation in all types of bases. Stability test by freeze-thaw cycle method indicated a change of homogeneity and organoleptic of F1 and F2. Spreadability of all formulas was not significantly different before and after the freeze-thaw cycle, while the stable sticky power only occurred at F4 (p-value=0.523). Formula F4 which is an ointment of C. odorata leaf extract with a water soluble base has the best stability among other bases.

Abstract

Background: Flavonoids found mainly as pharmacologically active natural ingredient of moringa (Moringa oleifera L.). Therefore, optimizing the solvent to maximize the levels of flavonoid components is needed. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the optimum solvent composition for extracting flavonoid compounds from moringa leaves using the simplex lattice design (SLD). Methods: Moringa leaves were extracted using the sonication method with five combinations of 96% ethanol and water as the solvent. The solvent composition was optimized using Design-Expert version 11 software. Moreover, UV-Vis spectrophotometry was used to screen and identify flavonoid content. Results: Flavonoids were detected in moringa extract. Using the F test, a valid SLD equation, y= 440,243(A) + 142,983(B) - 47,324(A)(B), was obtained. This equation shows that the solvent ethanol 96% : water (100:0) was the best solvent and produced the maximum amount of moringa flavonoid content, which was 440,2427 mg QE/g extract. Conclusion: The flavonoid content was directly proportional to the high composition of 96% ethanol.

Abstract

The trend of "back to nature" is inseparable from the weakness of treatment using synthetic drugs. Some of them are the side effects caused by the high cost of synthetic medicine that is not friendly to people with low economic level, so knowledge about the use of medicinal plants is very important to be owned by the community. The condition of the people of Senggigi village after the Lombok earthquake in August 2018 was under reconstruction. The land that was used for breeding and maintenance of family medicinal plants (TOGA) was destroyed and damaged. Also, public knowledge about the types of TOGA and the use of plants in the environment around the house which has medicinal properties is also lacking. The solution offered to overcome this problem is to provide knowledge about the types of TOGA and its use for health in the form of counseling to the community. This counseling is done to improve the knowledge and skills of the Senggigi villagers in the use of TOGA for health. This activity is carried out with the delivery of material and discussion, as well as the direct practice of how to process TOGA into preparations that are ready for consumption. The counseling program went well and the people of Senggigi village were very enthusiastic in the discussion. This counseling can increase the knowledge of Senggigi villagers about the use of TOGA as a family treatment seen from the increase in the average post-test score against the pre-test score.
