Abstract

Colorants are one of the food additives that serve to provide or enhance the color of food, thereby increasing the visual appeal of the product. Metanil yellow is an illegal azo dye used in food that can cause health effects such as toxic methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, anemia, and may trigger tumor formation. Based on this issue, this article aims to summarize qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques for metanil yellow, including their advantages and limitations, as a reference for food safety monitoring. The method employed is a literature review of both national and international indexed articles, with inclusion criteria for scientific articles related to the analysis of metanil yellow in food and beverages published in the last 10 years (2015–2025). Based on the literature review conducted, qualitative testing can be performed using Test Kits, Thin Layer Chromatography, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, and FT-IR Spectroscopy, while quantitative analysis can be conducted using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract

Bengkaung Village, located in Batulayar District, has abundant natural resources, but they have not been optimally utilized. One way to utilize medicinal plants is by processing them into dried products, commonly known as simplisia, which allow for more extended storage. The community lacks sufficient knowledge of proper simplisia production techniques using the simple tools available in the village. The purpose of this activity is to enhance the skills and knowledge of PKK cadres from Bengkaung Village in processing medicinal plants found around the village into dried simplisia products of high economic value. This training activity was conducted through counseling and hands-on practice in producing medicinal plant simplisia using simple technology, followed by simplisia packaging. The training ran smoothly, and participants were enthusiastic throughout the activity. The outcomes of this program include packaged medicinal plant simplisia products in attractive containers and an increase in the knowledge of proper simplisia production among PKK cadres.

Abstract

Algae are autotrophic organisms rich in bioactive compounds, including antioxidants. Macroalgae are classified into three main groups, namely brown, red, and green algae, each possessing different pigments that influence their antioxidant activity. Previous studies have shown that brown algae such as Padina spp. and Turbinaria spp. have strong antioxidant potential. At Elak-Elak Beach, Padina spp. is found abundantly, whereas Turbinaria spp. is relatively less common, and both remain underutilized. Environmental conditions in this area are presumed to influence the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of these algae. Therefore, this study aims to identify phytochemical compounds and evaluate the antioxidant activity of Padina spp. and Turbinaria spp. as a basis for developing sustainable algae-based products. Samples were collected during low tide, prepared as simplisia, and extracted using the ultrasonication method with 96% ethanol. Phytochemical screening was conducted using tube tests, while antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH method with ascorbic acid as a standard. The phytochemical test showed that both extracts were positive for flavonoids but negative for phenolics. The IC₅₀ values obtained were 3.14 ± 0.007 ppm for ascorbic acid (a very strong category), 222.27 ± 0.84 ppm for Padina spp. extract (a moderate category), and 871.84 ± 5.59 ppm for Turbinaria spp. extract (inactive category). The Kruskal–Wallis analysis indicated significant differences among groups (p = 0.027), whereas the Mann–Whitney test showed no significant difference between the IC₅₀ values of Padina spp. and Turbinaria spp. Overall, Padina spp. exhibits higher antioxidant activity and shows potential as a natural antioxidant source, while Turbinaria spp. demonstrates no antioxidant activity despite containing flavonoids.

Abstract

AbstractThe widespread circulation of skincare products without marketing authorization and low public literacy in choosing safe skincare products remain skin health issues that require attention. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) mothers in Bengkaung Village, Batulayar District, West Lombok Regency regarding the selection of appropriate and safe skincare products and to raise awareness of dangerous cosmetic products. The activity was carried out by involving 26 PKK mothers as target partners through counseling methods in the form of lectures, question and answer discussions, and distribution of educational pamphlets. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the activity was carried out using a pretest–posttest design to observe changes in the level of knowledge of participants before and after the educational intervention. The evaluation results showed an increase in participant knowledge descriptively, marked by an increase in the number of participants who obtained a score of ≥80 and no participants were found with a score below 40 in the posttest. However, the results of the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test showed that the increase was not statistically significant (p=0.591). Qualitatively, this activity resulted in tangible outcomes in the form of increased awareness, enthusiasm, and active participation of PKK mothers in understanding the importance of choosing safe skincare products. This activity not only contributed to increased individual knowledge but also strengthened the role of PKK mothers as educational agents within the family and community, thus becoming a reflective first step in building a sustainable culture of awareness of safe cosmetics. Keywords: health education; skincare; women members of the family welfare movement.
