Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the quality of the implementation of the Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program through direct mentoring and counseling by lecturers in Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency. The background of this activity is based on the persistence of several challenges in KKN implementation, including suboptimal program planning, limited student capacity in identifying community needs, and the lack of effective monitoring and supervision in the field. The implementation method employed an intensive mentoring and continuous counseling approach conducted directly by lecturers to students throughout the program. The stages included preparation, implementation of mentoring and counseling, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The results indicate an improvement in students’ ability to design community-based programs, implement activities systematically, and solve field-related problems adaptively. Mentoring also contributed to increased community participation and enhanced social interaction between students and the community. Overall, this activity demonstrates that the active role of lecturers in mentoring KKN significantly enhances the effectiveness of community service programs and strengthens the role of higher education institutions in sustainable community empowerment

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The rapid growth of Indonesia’s coffee industry has encouraged the emergence of affordable coffee-to-go products that are widely consumed by Generation Z in urban areas. This phenomenon reflects a shift in coffee consumption from merely fulfilling caffeine needs to becoming part of a contemporary lifestyle. This study aims to analyze the meaning of affordable coffee-to-go in the lives of Generation Z in Makassar, identify the factors influencing their consumption decisions, and explore their level of consumer legal awareness in everyday consumption practices. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with data collected through semi-structured interviews with Generation Z consumers aged 18–25 years who regularly consume coffee-to-go products priced between Rp10,000 and Rp20,000. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes emerging from participants’ experiences. The findings show that affordable coffee-to-go is perceived not only as a practical beverage supporting daily mobility but also as a source of energy to enhance focus and as part of the social lifestyle of young people. Consumption decisions are mainly influenced by product affordability, practicality, and the influence of social environments and digital media. Although most participants demonstrate a basic understanding of consumer rights, particularly regarding product safety and information transparency, their attention to formal consumer protection aspects remains limited. This study contributes to the development of consumption sociology and consumer awareness studies while providing practical insights for improving consumer protection literacy among Generation Z.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) deeply understand the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) phenomenon in ready-to-drink coffee consumption among young people in Makassar City, and (2) explore how FOMO shapes consumption behavior patterns in social contexts and social media use. The theoretical framework encompasses consumer behavior theory, FOMO in social psychology, and the influence of social media on purchasing decisions. This research employs a descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with 16 informants aged 17–29 years in Makassar. Thematic analysis was applied. Results show: first, FOMO manifests as a real and significant phenomenon in ready-to-drink coffee consumption, expressed through curiosity toward viral products, impulse to follow trends, and fear of being left out of social experiences; second, FOMO shapes consumption patterns through three main mechanisms social media trends (Instagram and TikTok as amplifiers), peer group pressure, and the need for social identity and existence. The convenience of ready-to-drink format serves as a catalyst shortening the distance between FOMO-driven impulse and actual purchase. The novelty lies in qualitative exploration of FOMO in practical beverage consumption in Indonesian urban settings. Findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of FOMO as a consumer behavior determinant with practical implications for coffee businesses and policymakers.
