Abstract

Obesity is a condition where a person has an exceeds body weight than normal limit due to accumulation of excess fat in the body. Obesity closely related to insulin resistance, which is a condition where the body cannot respond to insulin effectively. Therefore, education and routine screening for the elderly in order to detect and manage insulin resistance at an early stage is very important. This service activity is carried out using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method, which includes education about healthy eating patterns, physical activity and weight management, as well as screening insulin levels. Based on these activities, education and screening have proven important in preventing further complications and improving the quality of life of the elderly.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia, characterized by increased serum uric acid levels, occurs due to an imbalance between uric acid production and excretion. The prevalence in adults and the elderly in China is 12.69% and is higher in men (17.7%) than women (8.5%). Contributing factors such as genetics, diet, and lifestyle changes, lead to an increased risk of gout, kidney stones, and cardiovascular disease. Chronic hyperuricemia can cause joint damage and deformity due to the deposition of urate crystals. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) methodology to screen for hyperuricemia in the elderly at St. Mary's Church. Francis of Assisi. The screening results showed that 12 people (33.33%) of the 36 participants had hyperuricemia. Early detection of hyperuricemia is very important in preventing complications such as gout and cardiovascular disease. Regular check-ups and lifestyle changes can significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life for seniors.

Abstract

Temporary blood sugar is the level of glucose in the blood that measured without considering the time of the last meal, and often used to detect diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance. This community service activity aims to describe the distribution of blood sugar levels in 68 men and women of productive age at  Kalam Kudus II High School, Jakarta. This community service activity is carried out using the Plan-Do-Check-Action method. The results showed that the majority of respondents had normal fasting blood sugar levels (97.1%), with an average of 113.26 mg/dL and a median of 104 mg/dL. Lifestyle factors, nutrition, genetics, and chronic medical conditions can affect blood sugar levels at any time. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential for early detection and management of diabetes mellitus, which can prevent serious complications such as cardiovascular disease and nephropathy. Prevention strategies include a healthy diet, physical activity, patient education, and appropriate medical interventions. Comprehensive public health programs are needed to increase awareness and management of diabetes, as well as improve the quality of life of individuals affected by this disease.

Abstract

Abstract

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a common problem among the elderly, affecting their quality of life. Identifying reliable biomarkers like Apolipoprotein A (Apo-A) could improve management strategies, as its anti-inflammatory properties may help predict the severity of FI. This study aims to assess Apo-A as a lipid biomarker for predicting the severity of fecal incontinence, using the Fecal Incontinence Severity Index (FISI) for measurement. This cross-sectional study involved 93 elderly participants at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home, who exhibited varying FI levels. The severity was evaluated using the FISI, while serum lipid profiles were analyzed to measure Apo-A levels. We assessed Apo-A’s predictive ability for FI severity through the area under the curve (AUC) from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The state variable was set at 0 on the FISI scale, indicating the absence of FI. The AUC for Apo-A was found to be 0.631, with a p-value of 0.031, indicating that higher Apo-A levels are significantly linked to the absence of fecal incontinence. Apo-A is a promising biomarker for predicting FI severity, although its predictive capacity is limited. Future studies should investigate combining Apo-A with other inflammatory markers to enhance prediction accuracy.

Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent issue among elderly women, significantly impacting their quality of life. Handgrip strength, an indicator of overall muscle strength, is understudied in its role concerning UI. Utilizing handgrip strength to measure overall muscle strength, including pelvic floor muscles, introduces a novel approach to supporting continence maintenance in elderly women. The aim is to determine the correlation between handgrip strength and UI severity among elderly women, using the International Consultation on Incontinence – Short Form (ICIQ-SF) for measurement. This study involved 74 elderly female participants at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. Spearman’s correlation was employed to analyze the relationship between handgrip strength (in kilograms), measured with the Omron Handgrip Strength device on the right hand, and UI severity was assessed through the ICIQ-SF scoring questionnaire, with scores ranging from 0 to 21. Findings indicated a statistically significant negative correlation between handgrip strength and UI severity (r = -0.245, p = 0.035). This suggests that higher handgrip strength correlates with lower UI severity. The study found a significant correlation between handgrip strength and UI in elderly women, indicating that strength-building interventions may reduce UI severity.

Abstract

Dementia is a complex neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by cognitive decline, including memory impairment, difficulty in thinking, and social interaction, which can affect daily activities. This condition is often caused by other diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia, each with unique pathological mechanisms. Alzheimer’s disease, the leading cause of dementia, involves the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles that disrupt neuronal function and trigger chronic inflammation. Vascular dementia results from impaired blood flow to the brain, while Lewy body dementia is associated with the misfolding of alpha-synuclein protein. Meanwhile, frontotemporal dementia is linked to the accumulation of tau or TDP-43 proteins, causing degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes. Aging is the primary risk factor for dementia through the process of inflammaging, a low-grade chronic inflammation caused by persistent activation of the immune system. Inflammaging accelerates neurodegeneration by increasing oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the accumulation of pathological proteins. Additionally, neuroinflammation plays a crucial role by over activating microglia, which exacerbates neuronal damage. The combination of inflammation as both a trigger and a consequence create a pathological cycle that accelerates the progression of dementia. Preventive strategies include managing modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and adopting a healthy lifestyle, alongside developing therapies targeting inflammaging and neuroinflammation. A deeper understanding of these pathophysiological and inflammatory mechanisms is essential to support the development of multidisciplinary interventions to reduce the global burden of dementia.

Abstract

The management and care of wounds play a crucial role in the healing process. Improper wound management can lead to infections, slow down the healing process, and even cause post-healing disabilities. Therefore, increasing knowledge about wound care is essential, especially in initial treatment, by conducting wound care training to prevent infections. The training was provided to the administrative staff and youth of the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Tebet. It was conducted using two methods: theoretical and practical. Participants were given pre- and post-training tests to assess their understanding and knowledge before and after the training. A total of 22 participants attended the wound care training to prevent infections. There was a significant increase in the average test scores after the training. It can be concluded that the training improved participants' understanding and knowledge of wound care to prevent infections.
