Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the creative thinking skills of fourth-grade students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) at SD Negeri 091608 Sinaksak. The research was motivated by students’ low creative thinking ability due to teacher-centered instruction and limited active participation. Methodology – A pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The sample consisted of 23 fourth-grade students (12 boys and 11 girls). Data were collected through pretest and posttest instruments measuring creative thinking skills. Instrument validity and reliability were tested, and data were analyzed using the N-Gain test to determine the level of improvement after the PBL intervention. Findings – The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ creative thinking skills following the implementation of PBL. The average score increased from 50.22 (pretest) to 83.86 (posttest). Initially, most students did not achieve mastery, whereas after the intervention almost all students met the learning criteria. N-Gain scores ranged from 0.56 to 1.00, indicating moderate to high improvement. These findings suggest that PBL effectively enhances creative thinking in IPAS learning. Novelty – This study provides empirical evidence of the effectiveness of PBL in improving elementary students’ creative thinking skills within the integrated IPAS subject context. Significance – The findings benefit teachers, school administrators, and curriculum developers seeking effective student-centered learning strategies to foster creativity in primary education.

Abstract

Numeracy is a fundamental competency essential for every child, including children with autism. In learning, autistic children tend to have difficulty understanding number concepts, especially when the material is presented abstractly. Therefore, concrete and engaging learning media are needed to facilitate comprehension. This study aims to assess the numeracy skills of autistic children through the use of number puzzle s in learning activities. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study approach. The research subjects consisted of one autistic child and one teacher as informants. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data obtained were then analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. The results showed an increase in numeracy skills in children, characterized by the ability to recognize numbers, name numbers, and arrange number sequences, although this was not yet consistent. The use of number puzzle s increased children's engagement and attention and helped them understand number concepts more concretely. The teacher's role in providing guidance and support also contributed to the success of the learning process. Future research is recommended to involve more subjects and develop a variety of learning media to provide more comprehensive results.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of social interaction and independence in children with autism at Permata Diakoni. The focus of the study was on one subject, identified as MS, who experienced difficulties in communication, social interaction, and self-development skills. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña using NVivo version 15. Data validity was tested through source triangulation and time triangulation. The results showed that the development of the subject's social interaction began to be evident through increased responsiveness to calls, eye contact, and the ability to follow simple instructions. In terms of independence, the subject showed progress in self-feeding, following daily routines, and completing simple tasks with minimal direction. However, the subject still experienced difficulties in spontaneous social initiative, emotional regulation, and several self-development skills that required assistance. Supporting factors for development included a structured learning environment, consistent teacher guidance, and repeated positive reinforcement. It was concluded that a supportive and structured educational environment plays a crucial role in gradually improving the social interaction and independence of children with autism.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the collaboration between parents and teachers in supporting the development of social interactions in autistic children in student F at HKBP Tomuan Private Elementary School. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subject in this study is a mild autistic student with the initials F who is in grade VI. Informants in this study consisted of F's parents, homeroom teachers, and teachers closest to student F. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Lexy J. Moleong model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that the development of F's social interactions has changed gradually towards the better. This can be seen from F's ability to begin to respond to communication, be involved in several school activities, and begin to show acceptance of interactions with the surrounding environment. The pattern of assistance provided by parents is carried out through consistent communication, continuous attention, and an approach that adapts to the child's emotional condition. Meanwhile, teachers provide assistance through an individual approach, building emotional comfort, and involving F in social activities in the school environment. Collaboration between parents and teachers is fostered through open communication, shared involvement in understanding the child's needs, and alignment of support patterns between home and school. This collaboration positively influences the development of F's social interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors causing slow learning in students with RS at the UPTD SD Negeri 124398 Pematangsiantar. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively with reference to relevant theories and research. The results showed that RS students experienced obstacles in the learning process, characterized by low academic abilities, especially in reading, understanding instructions, and completing learning assignments. Students also took longer to understand the material than their classmates. In addition, it was found that students had low concentration and learning motivation, were easily distracted, were less active in learning, and lacked confidence in participating in classroom learning activities. The factors causing slow learning in RS students were influenced by internal and external factors. Internal factors include low academic ability, lack of concentration, low learning motivation, and underdeveloped self-confidence. Meanwhile, external factors include lack of learning support at home, limited parental attention, an unsupportive learning environment, and the students' health conditions from an early age. The study concluded that slow learning is the result of an interaction between internal and external factors that influence each other. Therefore, collaboration between teachers, parents, and schools is necessary to provide appropriate support so that students' learning abilities can develop optimally.

Abstract

This research presents a comprehensive analysis of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education, drawing insights from seven studies involving 150 students. The investigation delves into various factors such as academic proficiency, TOEFL scores, and gender distribution. Findings reveal a clustering of TOEFL scores around the midpoint of the range, suggesting a normal distribution. However, gender distribution exhibits significant deviations from normalcy. Despite these variations, detailed statistical analyses offer valuable insights into student performance within EMI programs. Moving beyond data analysis, a systematic review explores the impact and effective practices of EMI in higher education. It acknowledges the ongoing debate regarding EMI's influence on language proficiency and academic achievement. While some studies suggest positive outcomes, others highlight challenges and discrepancies, emphasizing the complexity of evaluating EMI's success. The review underscores the importance of examining diverse linguistic and non-linguistic factors and calls for further research to inform instructional strategies. Furthermore, the study identifies effective practices in EMI implementation, emphasizing instructional techniques, curriculum design, language support services, assessment procedures, faculty development, and reflective practice. These approaches aim to create inclusive learning environments conducive to language acquisition, subject matter learning, and student success. Additionally, the review proposes solutions to address challenges and promote inclusivity in EMI contexts, including cultural orientation programs, academic assistance, institutional regulations, social justice initiatives, intercultural competencies, and student-centered teaching approaches. This holistic approach seeks to enhance the long-term success and well-being of students within the EMI framework in higher education.
