Abstract

This research aims to explore the strategies used by the teachers as well as the challenges they face in implementing the teaching and learning activities during online classes. This research is qualitative research with a case study approach through interviews. The participants in this study were 2 English teachers from SMK Nasional Makassar. The data in this study were obtained through 3 parts of interviews with a total of ten questions. The findings show that the strategies used by English teachers in implementing learning during online classes are diagnostic assessment and discovery learning using several applications, including WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom, YouTube, Google Forms, and the Google search engine. The teachers also used several other strategies involving peer tutoring, using school facilities, implementing synchronous online learning, and parental counselling to overcome challenges. Meanwhile, their challenges are lack of access to technology, parental support, social influence, and student interest. Therefore, it is recommended for teachers to continue to use or apply a combination of strategies that they have implemented. In addition, because there are several other strategies discussed in this study, readers, especially teachers, can also use other strategies and technologies to increase the variety of their learning activities. Finally, during the observation of the application of discovery learning, the teacher used it to recount text materials with a combination of writing and speaking projects. It can be used differently in different material focuses and skills. So, it is also suggested that future researchers be more specific with certain aspects of teaching English, such as language skills or certain materials to enrich data related to that field.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the perceptions of students, find out the obstacles that students face, and explore the ways students solve the obstacles they face when using Google Translate in translation class. It uses a descriptive qualitative research method and interviews 10 students from the English Education Department class of 2019, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The results show that Google Translate is useful in terms of being able to translate words, paragraphs, documents, pictures, and speech instantly, with the synonym feature helping students adjust the context of the translation, follow the lesson in the classroom, complete assignments, increase confidence in collecting assignments, and improve students' translation skills. However, students are aware that the translation results must be improved and that they should not rely too much on Google Translate. Furthermore, the obstacles the students face in using Google Translate are a stable internet connection, a lack of accuracy, a maximum of 5,000 words, sometimes disordered translation results, and the inability to detect images and voices properly. To overcome the obstacles, students fix the translation results by themselves, asking friends, improving pronunciation, switching to other Google Translate features, and using Grammarly or the Microsoft Word application.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ and teachers’ points of view on the implementation of skimming and scanning techniques for reading comprehension. This research used qualitative methods and the instrument used in collecting the data was an interview. The population of this research was the 12th grade of the students SMKN 3 Gowa academic year 2022/2023. The participants of the interview were 6 students and the English teachers. The result of data analysis showed that both students’ and teachers’ perceptions generally hold positive views towards skimming and scanning techniques as effective strategies for reading comprehension. Skimming was perceived as beneficial for quickly grasping the main idea of a text, while scanning was valued for efficiently locating specific information. Participants acknowledged the importance of these techniques in academic contexts and daily life. However, challenges were identified, including difficulties in applying skimming and scanning accurately, especially for complex texts. Students expressed a need for more guided practice and explicit instruction to improve their proficiency in these skills. Overall, the study underscores the significance of incorporating skimming and scanning techniques effectively into reading instruction. By addressing the identified challenges and providing targeted support, educators can enhance students' reading comprehension skills and empower them to navigate various texts with confidence.
