Abstract

This study examines the role of agricultural counselors' performance in shaping rice farmers' satisfaction and behavior in East Java, Indonesia. Agricultural extension is central to national agricultural development, as counselors act as facilitators, motivators, and change agents who bridge knowledge and technology to farmers. Using a survey of 215 agricultural counselors and 215 rice farmers across Pacitan, Nganjuk, and Lamongan, data were collected through validated questionnaires and analyzed with SEM-PLS. The findings reveal that counselor performance is significantly influenced by job satisfaction, competence, motivation, and independence, while individual characteristics contribute less. Among these, job satisfaction shows the strongest effect, indicating that adequate facilities, supportive work environments, and fair compensation drive counselor effectiveness. Furthermore, counselor performance directly enhances farmers' behavior in adopting agricultural innovations and indirectly improves their satisfaction, particularly through improved yields and more consistent guidance. Farmers' satisfaction, in turn, fosters positive and proactive behaviors such as active participation and the application of extension recommendations. These results highlight that effective extension services depend not only on technical competence but also on psychological and organizational factors that motivate counselors and strengthen farmer trust. The study concludes that strengthening counselor performance is essential for sustainable agricultural development, farmer empowerment, and increased rice productivity.

Abstract

East Java Province is one of the largest chrysanthemum flower production centers in Indonesia, with productivity increasing significantly in the 2019-2023 period, supported by ideal climate conditions and soil fertility. The objectives of this study are to: (1) analyze the profitability of chrysanthemum farming with a greenhouse system, (2) analyze the risks of production, prices, and income of chrysanthemum farming with a greenhouse system in Tutur District, Pasuruan Regency, (3) Determine the efforts made by farmers to overcome risks. The sample of this study were chrysanthemum farmers who planted using greenhouses in Tutur District, Pasuruan. The number of respondent farmers in this study was 53 farmers. Data analysis used a descriptive analysis approach and risk analysis (coefficient of variation). From the results of this study, information was obtained that the feasibility level of chrysanthemum farming had an R/C ratio of 1.15 with a total income of Rp238,240,475/Ha/planting season. The results of the risk analysis showed CV values of 0.20 for production; 0.09 for price; and 0.23 for income, respectively. This indicates higher fluctuations in production and income compared to price fluctuations. This higher income risk is due to post-harvest damage and dependence on local markets or middlemen. However, each risk has a CV <0.5, indicating that this farming business is generally profitable.

Abstract

Women play a strategic role in the agricultural sector and family food security, yet they still face limited access to agricultural education, technology, and decision-making. This situation contributes to low levels of empowerment of female farmers, particularly in rural areas. This study aims to analyze women's empowerment through sustainable agricultural education, using a case study in Karangcangkring Village, Gresik Regency, Indonesia. The study employed a case study approach with descriptive qualitative methods supported by simple quantitative data. Data collection was conducted through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, pre- and post-activity questionnaires, and focus group discussions. The analysis of women's empowerment was conducted with reference to the cognitive, economic, social, and institutional dimensions. The results indicate that sustainable agricultural education has a positive impact on increasing the empowerment of female farmers. The most significant improvements occurred in the cognitive and social dimensions, demonstrated by increased agricultural technical knowledge, self-confidence, and women's active participation in group activities and decision-making. The economic and institutional dimensions also showed positive, albeit gradual, developments, particularly in production management, post-harvest management, and women's involvement in agricultural group structures. Overall, sustainable agricultural education not only improves the technical capacity of women farmers but also strengthens their agency, social participation, and position within rural agricultural livelihood systems. This research confirms that the integration of gender-sensitive agricultural education is a crucial strategy for empowering women farmers and promoting inclusive and sustainable agricultural development at the village level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the trends and relationships between the three pillars of sustainable agriculture economic, social and environmental in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) during the period 2010-2024. This study employed a quantitative approach utilizing secondary data analysis methods. Data were collected from the Central Bureau of Statistics, FAOSTAT and the Ministry of Agriculture, which included variables such as land productivity, Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP), fertilizer use, rural poverty, and greenhouse gas emissions. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistical techniques to examine time-series trends and Pearson correlation analysis to identify relationships between variables. The results indicated a decoupling phenomenon between the pillars of sustainability. Economically, rice and corn productivity in NTB shows an increasing trend, but this has a very strong positive correlation with the increase in the use of inorganic fertilizers, which indicates a heavy burden on the environmental pillar (land degradation risk and emissions). On the other hand, the increase in productivity is not followed by a significant increase in the social pillar, where the correlation with farmer welfare (NTP) is relatively weak. This indicates the existence of a food barn paradox: production increases, but high input costs erode farmers' profit margins. This study concludes that the agricultural system in NTB is currently in a High Input, High Risk condition. The proposed policy recommendation is the need for a transition from chemical input-based agriculture (input-driven) to organic efficiency and value-added agriculture (value-driven) to create a balance between economic profitability, social justice and ecosystem sustainability in NTB.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of product quality, price, agent service, sales location, and brand image on consumer satisfaction and loyalty toward BULOG rice in Mojokerto. Using a quantitative approach with 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling, data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS. The results indicate that while product quality, agent service, and sales location significantly influence satisfaction, they function as "hygiene factors" with small effect sizes. A notable "price disconnect" was identified: affordability strongly drives satisfaction (p=0.007) but fails to significantly foster loyalty (p=0.265). Conversely, brand image does not influence satisfaction (p=0.845) but acts as a "security anchor" that directly sustains loyalty (p=0.014) through institutional trust. Predictive relevance was confirmed using the PLSpredict procedure, showing robust Q2 values of 0.497 for satisfaction and 0.620 for loyalty. These findings suggest that BULOG should pivot from general marketing to operational excellence, focusing on quality SOPs and standardized agent services to transform institutional credibility into lasting consumer commitment.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world’s leading cocoa producers, yet its contribution to global value-added cocoa exports remains relatively low. This structural gap highlights the need to evaluate not only production capacity but also the competitiveness of Indonesian cocoa in international markets. This study aims to evaluate the competitiveness of Indonesian cocoa exports in four main destination countries: India, China, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Data sources were obtained from UM Comtrade, ITC Trademap, International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), and BPS. The analysis was conducted by combining methods of the Revealed Comparative Advantage, Export Competitiveness Index, and the Porter's Diamond Model. The results show that Indonesia still has a comparative and competitive advantage in several markets, especially India. The average RCA value was 10.41 in Malaysia, 9.42 (China), 5.40 (India), and 3.97 (the Philippines). Meanwhile, the ECI value is greater than one, namely 1.21 (India), 1.09 (China), 1.08 (Malaysia), and 1.05 (the Philippines). These advantages, however, are volatile and highly dependent on natural resource factors. Weak domestic demand, inconsistent quality standards, limited downstream industry capacity, and fragmented policy coordination remain key structural challenges. This research emphasizes that strengthening competitiveness not only requires the maintenance of comparative advantage, but also its transformation into a sustainable competitive advantage through institutional reform, cross-sector policy integration, and value-added product innovation.
