Abstract

Abstract

The cognitive process of thinking plays a pivotal role in understanding one's surroundings and effectively solving problems. This research endeavors to delve into the intricate factors contributing to the concealment of thinking processes in writing among students with high mathematical resilience. Employing a qualitative approach, specifically adopting a case study research design, the study concentrates on the students enrolled at SMPI Al-Lailiyah Sumenep. The comprehensive dataset is derived from the results of numeracy-type tests and interviews conducted with the student. The outcomes of this research shed light on a persistent challenge observed during the problem-solving phase among students exhibiting high mathematical resilience. A predominant tendency is noted, wherein these students habitually prioritize the correctness of final results over conveying the step-by-step reasoning behind their solutions. Several causative factors contribute to this phenomenon. First, the students’ established approach to problem-solving, emphasizing the end result, impedes the transparent expression of their cognitive processes in writing. Additionally, past experiences related to the types of questions posed, the depth of their understanding of mathematical concepts, a lack of feedback from teachers, and the absence of visible thinking routines in written assignments during the learning process collectively contribute to the challenge.DOI: 10.17977/jps.v11i32023p079

Abstract

This research aims to uncover the causes of errors in solving numeracy problems related to trigonometry among students with a strongly field-independent cognitive style. The research method employs a case study with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study are students of class XI MA Ibadurrochman Malang. The instrument in this study consists of the main instrument, namely the researcher himself and supporting instruments consisting of GEFT (Group Embedded Figure Test) sheets and Numeration Problem Solving Test Sheets (TPMN) and interview guidelines. This data analysis technique used interactive model analysis. The research findings indicate that the causes of student errors in solving numeracy problems are primarily rooted in their previous knowledge, which results in these errors. In other words, their previous knowledge is unable to serve as a foundational material for generating ideas in solving new problems encountered. These new problems related to trigonometry are used not only to apply previously acquired knowledge to the issues at hand but also to learn new mathematical concepts. Consequently, numeracy problems become a solution for students to study mathematics coherently.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to analyze the teacher's skills, and the interpreting skills of the teacher in identifying the student's ability to solve problems based on the stages developed by Swartz (1998), i.e. generating ideas, clarifying ideas, and assessing the reasonableness of ideas. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The students involved in solving mathematical problems are named A, B, C, and D. The four teachers involved as research subjects are represented by G1, G2, G3, and G4. Each teacher is given four student answers which are then analyzed. Interpreting skills of each subject are developed by researchers in the way of interviews. The interviews conducted are semi-structured, then the results of the interviews are analyzed by the researchers. Data analysis techniques using the Miles and Huberman model are: 1) data reduction; 2) data display; and 3) concluding drawing. The results show that G2 and G4 have complete interpretation skills, whereas G1 and G3 have interpreting skills that only generate and clarify ideas.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' critical thinking skills before and after the learning process. Analysis of critical thinking skills in this study based on components of critical thinking evaluation, inferences, explanations, and self-regulation. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The research subject consisted of 2 students with low critical thinking abilities based on task 1 given at the beginning of learning, besides that good communication was also one of the subject selection criteria. The results of the analysis showed that both research subjects SS and FT experienced an increase in their critical thinking abilities, this was evident from each indicator critical thinking evaluation, inferences, explanation, and self-regulation. In each indicator of critical thinking, the research subject is able to demonstrate the ability to do evaluation, inferences, explanation, and self-regulation, this is certainly very different from the initial conditions of research subjects where they have not been able to do evaluations, inferences, explanation well. One of the things that allows an increase in critical thinking skills is the subject of teaching and learning activities, namely by giving task that require students to practice their critical thinking skills.
