Abstract

Academic procrastination is frequently observed among college students, especially those juggling multiple roles, including work and child-rearing. The demands of educational, professional, and familial duties can significantly hinder their capacity to finish assignments punctually. This study follows the Temporal Motivation Theory (Steel, 2007) and employs a unique case study methodology, focusing on two individuals from Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo (UMSIDA). The selection of participants was carried out using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and observations where the researchers did not take part, followed by analysis using the thematic approach outlined by Miles and Huberman. The results identify three primary reasons for procrastination: (1) a lack of belief in achieving success due to exhaustion, (2) a reduced perceived importance of academic tasks in comparison to work or family responsibilities, and; (3) a loose interpretation of deadlines. The study concludes that procrastination in academia acts as a way to cope with conflicting roles and helps in preserving mental balance

Abstract

Academic boredom has become a significant psychological phenomenon affecting literacy learning in elementary schools, characterized by unpleasant emotional experiences, cognitive deficits, and reduced motivation. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the adapted Pomodoro Technique in reducing academic boredom in literacy learning among fifth-grade students. This research employed a true experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group involving 53 fifth-grade students at SDN Krembung 1, randomly assigned to experimental (n=27) and control (n=26) groups. The experimental group received the Pomodoro Technique intervention (15 minutes focus, 5 minutes break) for 6 weeks, while the control group received conventional learning. Academic boredom was measured using the adapted Achievement Emotions Questionnaire Academic Boredom Subscale (α=0.906). Data were analyzed using paired t-test, independent t-test, and Cohen's d. The results showed a highly significant reduction in academic boredom scores in the experimental group (M=-12.22, SD=4.19, 20.70% decrease) compared to the control group (M=-1.65, SD=2.02, 2.87% decrease). Independent t-test revealed a very significant difference (t=-5.91, p<0.001) with a very large effect size (Cohen's d=-1.63), indicating that the Pomodoro Technique is 7.36 times more effective than conventional learning in reducing academic boredom. The adapted Pomodoro Technique is highly effective in reducing academic boredom in elementary school literacy learning, providing evidence-based solutions to support quality education goals aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 4 achievement.

Abstract

Father involvement is crucial for children's emotional, social, and cognitive development, but their role in parenting children with special needs remains minimal. This study explores the forms and dynamics of father involvement in parenting children with special needs, focusing on factors that influence father involvement in parenting: emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioral factors. This study examines the forms and dynamics of fathers' involvement in the care of children with special needs, focusing on the emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioral factors that influence fathers' involvement in childcare. This study uses a qualitative case study approach with purposive sampling, based on the criteria of fathers who have children with special needs aged 4 years or older. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and participatory observation, followed by thematic analysis to identify patterns and meanings in the fathers' experiences. Emotionally, fathers experienced shock, denial, and fear, which hindered the development of the father-child relationship. Cognitively, fathers tended to delegate child-rearing responsibilities to mothers. Socially, stigma and shame caused fathers to withdraw from society. Behavioral involvement was inconsistent and generally limited to simple activities. Significant barriers included traditional gender roles, workload, lack of information, and lack of social support. The results of this study highlight the importance of comprehensive family interventions, such as education programs, parenting classes, and psychological counseling, to increase father involvement. Gender-sensitive policies are also needed to create an inclusive environment in the care of children with special needs.
