Abstract

The study was to determine the concentrations of Zn in porewater and fine roots of Rhizophora sp., and to examine their interactions with mangrove densities and physico-chemical. Porewater samples, fine roots,  and sediments were collected in a 100 m2 plot at each site with different mangrove densities. The average Zn concentrations in mangrove roots in the study area were 0 – 58.21 mg/kg, suggested the capability of mangrove roots in retaining Zn. The average dissolved Zn concentrations in porewater were 0.63 mg/L – 3.50 mg/L, illustrated the amount of Zn bioavailable form and its potential release to the adjacent environment. The Zn concentrations in porewater did not correlate significantly with the densities of mangroves. The concentrations of Zn in roots increased as the densities were higher, which is possibly caused by the absence of mangrove at Site 1. The study discovered the important roles of organic content and silt/clay in Zn sorption thus affect Zn levels in porewater. The concentrations of Zn in mangrove roots increased as the pH of sediment and porewater decreased.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The aplication of dynamic model to describe the effect of eutrophication and sedimentation on coral reefs damage in a wider scope. The trial were performed in two main areas of coral reefs in South Sulawesi, namely in Spermonde Archipelago and in Sembilan Archipelago in Bone Bay. Retrieval of data include measurements of water quality (nitrate and phosphate concentration) and the rate of sedimentation. While collecting of ecological data, namely macroalgae cover, coral reef cover, and species of herbivores and its abundance. Data was collected on monthly for 4 months at six stations/islands. The data was taken at two points on each island as replicates. Oceanographic data were taken every month, while the ecological data were taken at the end of the study. Nutrients concentration (nitrat and phosphat) and sedimentation rate were measured in laboratory. The result of the model test showed that the developed model is valid and broad-spectrum and therefore can be applied to other areas already impacted by eutrofi cation and sedimentation. The results of the execution of the model shows that all stations on the island leads Phase shift, namely the dominance of macroalgae cover in the future (about 2-4years in the future).

Abstract

The Mamuju River Estuary is an estuary whose role is to protect coastal ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs) from the negative effects of intensification of land clearing upstream and coastal. Land clearing for various human needs encourages erosion resulting in high TSS (Total Suspended Solid) concentrations in river water bodies. This study aimed to determine the assimilation capacity of the Mamuju River estuary on TSS pollutants. The results showed that TSS concentrations still met the quality standard for marine biota (mangroves: <80 mg / l) with a lower distribution pattern when getting further away from the river mouth. The flushing time at the study site is 5.6 days so the river and seawater exchange is ± 65 times per year. The pollutant load was 586.11 tons/month. The value of the assimilation capacity reaches 255.57 tons/month. Based on these results it can be concluded that the Mamuju River estuary has experienced an overload of sediment.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems consist of tropical plants that have adapted to the salinity, tidal fluctuations, and loose soil condition. Identification of mangrove ecosystems can be carried out by direct survey methods or by utilizing remote sensing technology. This study aims to map the area, percent cover, and density of mangroves in Makassar City using Sentinel 2A Imagery. The method used is the NDVI transformation, followed by Unsupervised-ISODATA classification, ground check with the 10 x 10-meter plotting method, and hemispherical photography. The results showed that the existence of mangroves in Makassar City was still found in the Tallo and Biringkanaya districts, with 68.81 ha of mangrove ecosystem cover area in the range of 84.36 - 91.89% (dense category). Likewise, the vegetation index based on NDVI analysis ranged from 0.73 - 0.81 (dense category), and the species density was in the range of 2700 - 6400 trees/Ha (dense category). Sentinel-2A imagery transformed with NDVI can be used to track mangrove areas and their density. The wide distribution of mangrove ecosystems in Makassar is relatively small but has good conditions.

Abstract

Coral reefs in the waters of Liukangloe Island were reported to have experienced a bleaching phenomenon in May 2016 and rehabilitation efforts were carried out in 2019. This study aimed to analyze the structure of the herbivorous fish community and its role in controlling algal cover in the rehabilitation area. Observations of herbivorous fish were carried out using visual census techniques on an area of 4m2 and observation of algae in 0.5x0.5 m2 transects on several coral attachment media from dead coral substrates. The results showed that the proportion of herbivorous fish species in the transplant area ranged from 15.81-58.67% and the proportion of individuals ranged from 12.51-34.62%. The dynamics of the number of species and abundance of herbivorous reef fish did not show significant differences between substrates and had the same dynamic pattern in all substrates uses but varied temporally according to the time of observation. The exception is the rubble area which continues to increase until the end of the observation. A high number of herbivorous fish species richness was observed in the branching and natural coral substrates and low in the rubble substrate.  The abundance of herbivorous reef fish showed a significant and negative relationship to algal cover and confirmed that the presence of herbivorous reef fish could control or reduce the value of algal cover.

Abstract

Background: Bontosua Island, located in the Spermonde Archipelago, is one of the strategic and historical islands in the region. The island plays a vital role in ecosystem conservation efforts by the local community, who are committed to preserving their natural environment. With dynamic ecosystem conditions, it is essential to understand the seabed cover and biodiversity on the island to support more effective conservation efforts. Methods: This study was conducted from March to September 2022 to mark the seabed cover of Bontosua Island and understand the relationships between coral reef fish species and the ecosystem. The method used was a stationary visual census, followed by descriptive analysis and one-way ANOVA to assess the biodiversity and diversity of coral reefs. Findings: The results showed a total of 1,306 coral reef fish from 9 families with 63 species identified, including the families Chaetodontidae, Serranidae, Lutjanidae, Haemulidae, Lethrinidae, Scaridae, Acanthuridae, and Siganidae. The families with the highest citations were Scaridae, Acanthuridae, and Siganidae. The highest coral reef fish were found in the north, west, and southwest of the island, where live coral areas are more dominant. Conclusion: This study shows that Bontosua Island has significant coral reef diversity, and certain areas, such as the north and southwest sides, have higher reported fish. These findings indicate the importance of these areas in conservation efforts. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a comprehensive picture of the seabed cover and coral reef fish diversity in Bontosua Island, which has yet to be widely discussed in previous studies. These findings provide a scientific basis for more targeted conservation strategies and help improve understanding of the dynamics of coral reef ecosystems in the Spermonde Islands
