Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the physiological status, blood profiles and body composition of sheep fed with Ca-saponified lemuru oil coated by herbs. Twenty fat-tailed sheep (av. BW 23±1.2 kg) were used in this experiment by using Completely Randomized Design with five treatments ration and four replications of each. Sheep fed with concentrate containing 3% Ca-saponified lemuru oil and king grass (1:1) ad libitum. Treatments were control diet without herbs (R1); Ca-saponified lemuru oil coated by curcumae domestica (R2); coated by Zingiber officinale Rosc (R3); coated by Eugenia polyantha (R4) and coated by Pluchea indica Less (R5). Data of physiological parameters were measured three times a day, in the morning, at noon and afternoon. Blood samples were collected at the end of the experiment through jugular vein, together with zero sample for Urea Space measurement. The variables observed were physiological data (heart rate, respiration rate, and rectal temperature), blood profiles (erythrocyte, hemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV), leucocytes) and body composition (water, protein and fat) measured using Urea Space technique. Results of the study showed that sheep fed with Ca-saponified lemuru oil coated by herbs was not significantly different on heart rate, respiration rate and rectal temperature among treatments. Meanwhile, total leucocytes, neutrophil cell, and lymphocytes significantly increased (P<0.05) by the treatment. Body composition percentage (water, protein and fat) were same in all treatments, except the total body fat and energy retained. In conclusion, supplementation of 3% Ca-saponified lemuru oil coated by Curcumae domestica, Zingiber officinale Rosc, Eugenia polyantha and Pluchea indica Less in fat-tailed sheep had no effect on physiological parameters, but improved the leucocyte and neutrophil cells. Total body fat and energy retained lower compared to control treatment.(Key words: Body composition, Ca-saponified, Herbs, Lemuru oil, Urea space)

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of heat stress on thermoregulation, haematology, and productivity of Holstein Friesian (HF) dairy cows raised in different elevations. A total of 63 HF in a normal lactation period were used in this study. The research was conducted for 3 months during dry season in three different areas, which were at Pondok Ranggon (97 m.a.s.l) which categorized as a lowland, Ciawi (576 m.a.s.l) which categorized as a lower-upland, and Lembang (1241 m.a.s.l) which categorized as an upland. Observation on microclimate aspects which includes environmental temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH) and Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) was done by recording each variable for every 2 hours starting from 08.00 to 16.00 WIB. The thermoregulation analysis was done based on the given physiological responses which consisted of the skin temperature (Ts), rectal temperature (Tr), body temperature (Tb), heart rate (Hr), respiratory rate (Rr), Heat Tolerance Coefficient (HTC), plasma cortisol level and haematological profile observation. The Ta, Rr, and THI measurements showed that in the lowland and lower-upland, the HF experienced moderate heat stress, while the HF raised in the upland area experienced less heat stress. The results showed that the dairy cows which raised in lowland had the highest HTC, Tr, Ts and Tb (P<0.05) and lowest Hr (P<0.05). All of the physiological and haematological parameters in the three study area showed a normal value.Furthermore, the erythrocyte, Hb and PVC concentration in a lowland raised HF were higher (P<0.05), while the plasma cortisol levels were not significantly different. The milk production of the observed dairy cows in different elevations was significantly different (P<0.05), with the highest milk yields, were found in the upland raised HF (13.1±3.52 kg), followed by the lower-upland (11.3±4.73 kg) and lowland (7.0±3.36 kg). In general, all of the HF raised in different land elevations was exposed to heat stress during dry seasons, even though the cows showed the ability to physiologically adapt and cope with the conditions.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of Black soldier fly (BSF) larva extract. The BSF larva was extracted using methanol and then tested for antibacterial activity using agar diffusion method (zone growth inhibition). The antibacterial activity was conducted against Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli, two important bacterial strains in poultry, using six dilution levels (10 mg/ml, 20 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml, 80 mg/ml, 160 mg/ml and 320 mg/ml). All the results were subjected analyze using t-test method. Based on the diameter of the inhibition zone, the BSF larva extract has a strong (P<0.05) antibacterial activity against Salmonella sp. and E. coli when the concentration used 320 mg/ml. In addition, BSF larva extract also contain high amount of lauric acid (49.18%), a saturated fatty acid that has been proven to proposes as antibacterial agent. Therefore, it could be concluded that the BSF larva extract could be used as a candidate for antibacterial substances.

Abstract

The increased beef cattle production at traditional farms is a strategy to achieve meat self-sufficiency in 2026. This is accomplished through various parties, including the government, academics, researchers, the private sector, and farmers as the main actors. Therefore, this study aimed to determine and analyze criteria, performance criteria, strategies, and alternatives for sustainable beef cattle production in traditional farms based on the opinion of experts. The research location was School for Smallholder Community (SPR) Maju Bersama, Sungai Lilin Sub-District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Primary data were collected through FGD (focus group discussion) and interview with expert stakeholders, including farmers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, and research analyst. They were analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with R studio version 4.1.2. The result showed that Musi Banyuasin Regency has a natural resource potential for supporting beef cattle production with an institutional collaborative strategy. The interaction between the production factors showed that the feeding criteria were at the highest level, with 32.05%. Considering the performance criteria, business sustainability was essential at 35.70% and should be achieved by adopting a corporate strategy of 85.52%, implemented through alternative business management at 61.40%.

Abstract

This study determined the effects of different flushing frequency on performance and blood metabolite profile of ewes and their suckling lambs at pre-weaning period. Twelve multiparous Garut ewes (2 years-old, BW 30.06 ± 6.20 kg) and 18 lambs born to experimental ewes (lambing weight 2.49 ± 0.56 kg) were used in this study. Ewes were randomly assigned into four treatment groups in a complete block design, namely: without flushing (T0: control), flushing at the beginning of mating (T1: 2 weeks before and after mating), two times flushing (T2: T1 + 4 weeks flushing at mid-gestation), and three times flushing (T3: T2 + 2 weeks flushing at before and after parturition). Three times flushing increased ((p<0.05) the crude fat intake, while different flushing frequencies did not affect (p>0.05) dry matter intake and intakes of crude protein, crude fiber, nitrogen-free extract, and total digestible nutrients of ewes at the pre-weaning period. Different flushing frequencies did not change (p>0.05) the productive performances of ewes during the pre-weaning period. Flushing application improved (p<0.05) the average daily gain of pre-weaning lambs at 14 days, but it did not affect the weaning weight of lambs. Two times flushing showed no pre-weaning mortality rate (p<0.05). Flushing application tended to decrease (p=0.08) blood plasma triglyceride of ewes at 21- days, while two times flushing frequency tended to increase blood plasma cholesterol (p=0.05) and triglyceride (p=0.08) of lambs at 21 days. In conclusion, increased flushing frequency supports ewes and their twin lamb growth performance and blood metabolite profile at the pre-weaning period

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of herbal mineral block (HMB) supplementation containing turmeric flour, black soldier fly (BSF), and micro minerals on the performance and blood profile of Dorper crossbred sheep. Ten growing sheep and ten lactating sheep were divided into two treatment groups (P0: complete feed without HMB supplementation and P1: complete feed with HMB supplementation). The research design used was a factorial completely randomized design (2 × 2) with 5 replications. Factor physiological status of growing and lactating sheep and factor supplementation with and without HMB. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan’s test. The results showed no interaction between physiological status and HMB supplementation on sheep performance (nutrient intake, initial and final body weight, daily body weight gain, and feed efficiency) and blood profile (hematology, metabolites, and minerals). The physiological status had a very significant effect (p<0.01) on nutrient intake, initial and final body weight, daily body weight gain, feed efficiency, and significantly (p<0.05) on serum phosphorus. Supplementation of HMB significantly (p<0.05) increased serum calcium which was crucial for bone an teeth development in growing sheep and milk production in lactating sheep. Serum phosphorus was higher in growing sheep, supporting their bone growth and energy metabolis compared to lactating sheep as it was diverted to the mammary gland.
