Abstract

This research examines the possibilities and limitations of using ChatGPT in learning Arabic as a foreign language. Using a descriptive method, this study presents theories regarding using ChatGPT in language learning and how it is practically applied in learning Arabic as a foreign language. It also highlights the limitations learners should consider when using this application correctly and effectively. This research indicates that ChatGPT can assist Arabic language learners as "smart students" and "smart learning partner." With this role, ChatGPT can help them complete tasks and assignments, create a flexible and personalized learning environment, and improve their language skills. However, learners should also be mindful of the limitations of using ChatGPT, especially regarding ethical aspects and the limitations of the technology itself. They should maintain academic ethics and avoid excessive dependence on ChatGPT, which could negatively impact their critical thinking abilities, engagement spirit, and learning motivation.

Abstract

The learning of maharah kalam (Arabic speaking skills) at Khairunnas Islamic Senior High School, Surabaya, encountered several non-linguistic obstacles that hindered students’ speaking proficiency. This study aimed to identify and analyze these barriers and propose relevant pedagogical solutions. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving one teacher and eight twelfth-grade Science students as participants. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and verification using source triangulation. The findings revealed three categories of non-linguistic barriers: (1) psychological factors, such as low motivation and self-confidence; (2) pedagogical factors, including monotonous teaching methods and limited speaking practice; and (3) socio-academic factors, particularly the lack of a school environment that supports the active use of Arabic. The study concludes that implementing communicative teaching methods and fostering a supportive language environment are essential to improving students’ Arabic speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the antonyms present in Surah Al-Waqiah. It provides a general description of antonyms (al-Tadhad), the theory used in determining antonyms (al-Tadhad), and the classification of antonym types (al-Tadhad) found in Surah Al-Waqi'ah based on the perspective of M. Ali Al-Kuli. The study adopts a library research approach, using the primary data of Surah Al-Waqi'ah from the Quran and secondary data from books and articles on semantics and antonyms. Data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman technique, involving data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The findings reveal six types of antonyms: mutadarrij antonyms (multilevel), juz'I antonyms (sections), imtidadiy antonyms (extensional or straight line), had (binary) antonyms, intisabiy (affinity) antonyms, and axis (poles) antonyms. However, from M. Ali Al-Khuli's perspective, Surah Al-Waqi'ah does not contain the antonyms of Antonim Amudi, Antonim Daairi, and Antonim Rotiby. The practical implication of this study is that every word in the Quran holds its aesthetic meaning.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of religious moderation in international Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia using the national framework of religious moderation, which comprises moderation of thought, movement, and action. Employing a qualitative multiple-case study design, the research examines two institutions in Malang International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) Al Izzah and IIBS Thursina through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation analysis. Data were analyzed thematically using a framework-based approach guided by the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that religious moderation is implemented in an integrated and contextual manner. Moderation of thought is reflected in the alignment of Islamic teachings with national ideology and civic values. Moderation of movement is manifested through daily social practices that promote tolerance and dialogue. Moderation of action is evident in the rejection of violence and the selective accommodation of local culture in accordance with Islamic principles. Overall, the study challenges perceptions of international pesantren as exclusive institutions and highlights their role in fostering inclusive and peaceful religious life in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the stylistic features employed in conveying divine promises to believers in Surah Muhammad, as well as the linguistic patterns manifested in its verses. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive method with a stylistic approach, focusing specifically on verses that articulate divine promises. The data were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques and subsequently analyzed using linguistic theories encompassing phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The findings indicate that: (1) the dominance of the consonantal sounds lām, mīm, and nūn carries particular stylistic significance, functioning as central phonological elements closely related to the contextual framework of Surah Muhammad. The articulation of divine promises to believers is frequently introduced through oath-based constructions. (2) The use of fiʿl māḍī and fiʿl muḍāriʿ reflects the continuous and enduring nature of divine promises, which apply both in worldly life and in the hereafter. (3) The employment of emphatic structures (tawkīd) and prohibitive expressions serves to reinforce the magnitude and certainty of these promises. (4) The selection of polysemous diction contributes to semantic depth and allows for broader interpretative understanding of the messages conveyed in the verses.

Abstract

The development of technology has impacted the way students access learning resources, including the use of dictionaries as a primary tool for understanding Arabic vocabulary. This study aims to identify students' interests and preferences in using printed and electronic dictionaries to learn Arabic at Sunan Ampel University, Surabaya. This study relied on a descriptive quantitative approach using a survey method. The sample consisted of 26 students from the Department of Arabic Language and Literature and the Department of Arabic Language Education. Data was collected through an online questionnaire (G-Form) and interviews with professors in both departments. The study concluded that most students prefer electronic dictionaries because they are more practical, quicker to access, and compatible with today's digital learning style. However, some students still insist on using printed dictionaries for specific purposes that are considered more in-depth and beneficial. Several students are unaware of how to find a word in a printed dictionary, having initially relied on electronic dictionaries. These results also indicate a shift in the learning culture among Arabic language students and provide a basis for lecturers and educational institutions to adjust their learning methods and provide learning resources relevant to the needs of the digital generation.
