Abstract

The digital age has transformed education. In the context of chemistry education, particularly in the complex topic of salt hydrolysis, the integration of technology offers innovative solutions to enhance student learning. This study aims to develop and determine the effectiveness of Electronic Student Worksheets (E-LKPD) based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students' learning motivation and problem-solving skills in the topic of salt hydrolysis. Through Research and Development (R&D) using the 4D model, the developed E-LKPD in Flipbook format has been validated by material and media experts with high validity values of 0.96 and 0.89 and has received a positive response from students of 80.12%. The research results show that the use of E-LKPD significantly increases students' learning motivation (45%) and problem-solving skills (75%). This indicates that PBL-based E-LKPD is an effective learning media for the topic of salt hydrolysis.

Abstract

Waste is one of the polemic problems that occurs in Indonesia. Almost every region has savings in the form of waste in large amounts and is spread throughout Indonesia. Not a few people do not care about the use of plastic waste which can cause environmental pollution. This study highlights the teaching of microplastic material, a new global environmental problem, in science learning. The novelty lies in the emphasis on topics that are relevant to current environmental conditions and offer innovative learning strategies, such as project-based methods, experiments, and digital technology, to improve students' understanding. This research aims to analyze science learning strategies in integration with microplastics. The method used in this research is a literature review using the PRISMA approach. The data source was taken from Sinta 1-3 via the Google search engine over the last 6 years. The results of the review found that the learning model most frequently used as Problem Based Learning (PBL), then the second most frequently used was the Guided Inquiry model. These two learning models are often used because they are most relevant to the nature and complexity of environmental problems, while the learning model that is rarely used is the Discovery Learning model because this model gives students the freedom to find information independently so that if students are not guided it will cause unnecessary misunderstandings. adequate regarding environmental pollution problems.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of an ethnochemistry-based flipped problem-based learning (FPBL) model on students’ chemical literacy in buffer solution material. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups. Data were collected through chemical literacy tests and analyzed using MANOVA at a 5% significance level. The results revealed a significant difference in chemical literacy between students who learned through the ethnochemistry-based FPBL model and those instructed using a conventional scientific approach. The model contributed 23.5% to the improvement in students’ chemical literacy, indicating a substantial effect. Furthermore, students exposed to the ethnochemistry-based FPBL model demonstrated enhanced ability to integrate chemical concepts with problem-solving and apply knowledge in practical scenarios. These findings highlight the effectiveness of incorporating ethnochemistry elements into flipped problem-based learning, providing a structured and culturally relevant approach that promotes deeper understanding of chemistry concepts. This study offers evidence that the ethnochemistry-based FPBL model can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to enhance chemical literacy, suggesting its potential for broader application in chemistry education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze chemical literacy and students’ conceptual understanding, as well as to identify effective learning strategies from a global perspective. The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA approach on scientific articles indexed in Scopus within the period of 2015–2025. Based on the selection process, a total of 11 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using narrative synthesis and thematic analysis based on three main focuses: the development of chemical literacy, its relationship with conceptual understanding, and instructional approaches. The findings indicate that chemical literacy is a multidimensional construct encompassing knowledge, skills, attitudes, and the ability to apply concepts in real-life contexts, and it has evolved toward critical chemical literacy grounded in global issues. Furthermore, the results reveal that the level of students’ chemical literacy remains relatively low across various countries and is closely related to their conceptual understanding of chemistry. Various instructional approaches, such as context-based learning, socio-scientific issues (SSI), STEAM, argumentation, and technology integration, have been proven effective in enhancing both chemical literacy and conceptual understanding. In conclusion, chemical literacy and conceptual understanding are interrelated constructs that should be developed integratively through contextual and innovative learning approaches to address global challenges.

Abstract

The need to improve critical thinking and scientific argumentation skills in chemistry highlights the importance of integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) into teaching materials. In the context of chemistry, ESD encourages students to relate chemical concepts to real-life environmental, social, and economic issues, while PBL encourages inquiry through real-world problem scenarios. This study aims to develop a digital student worksheet (E-LKM) that innovatively combines the ESD approach and the PBL learning model for the topic of chemical equilibrium in solution. Unlike conventional worksheets, this E-LKM presents sustainability-based dilemmas—such as pollution from industrial waste and its effects on equilibrium systems—designed to trigger discussion, collaboration, and higher-order thinking. This study used the Research and Development (R&D) method, using the Thiagarajan 4D model, involving 40 students and 5 chemistry education lecturers from Riau Province as samples. Data analysis included validation by experts and user feedback on the practicality and readability of the results. E-LKM obtained a validation score of 115 (very good), a practicality score of 71, and a readability score of 60.767—both of which were classified as very good. These results indicate that E-LKM is a valid and practical tool for supporting chemistry learning, with a focus on sustainability, critical thinking, and scientific argumentation

Abstract

Bacterial cellulose (C) and its composites were synthesized from rice waste water with addition of glycerol (G) and chitosan (Ch).Antibacterial activity of the C, the bacterial cellulose-chitosan composite (CCh), and the bacterial  cellulose – glycerol - chitosan composite (CGCh) which were deposited silver nanoparticles against S. aureus, E. coli,  and yeast C. albicans has been conducted. Silver nanoparticles was prepared by chemical reduction of a silver nitrate solution, a trisodium citrate as a reductor, and a PVA as a stabilizer. The UV-Vis spectroscopy is used to determine the formation of silver nanoparticles. The characterization was conducted on the bacterial celluloses and those composites including the functional groups by the FTIR, the mechanical properties by Tensile Tester, photos surfaces by SEM, and the test of the antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans by diffusion method. The silver nanoparticle characterization indicates that the silver nanoparticles are formed at a wavelength of 418.80 nm. The antibacterial test showed an inhibitory effect of the C, the CCh, and the CGCh which are deposited  the silver nanoparticles against of S. aureus, E. coli,  and C.albicans. The CGChs which are deposited silver nanoparticles has the highest antimicrobial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The CGs which are deposited silver nanoparticles provide the highest antimicrobial activity against the E. coli ATCC 25922 and the yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231.
