Abstract

This study aims to develop a Student Worksheet (LKPD) on Chemical Bonding assisted by Augmented Reality (AR) based on deep learning and to examine its feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness in improving learning activities and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of high school students. The research employed a 4D development model (define, design, develop, and disseminate) using a pretest posttest control group design involving 11th grade students. Research instruments included expert validation sheets, learning activity questionnaires, and HOTS test instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The results indicated that the AR-based LKPD met very feasible and practical criteria based on expert judgment and student responses. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in learning activities and HOTS achievement (p = 0.005). The increase in HOTS scores in the experimental group was categorized as moderate, indicating meaningful learning gains. These findings demonstrate that the AR-assisted Chemical Bonding LKPD is effective as an innovative learning medium for supporting students’ understanding of abstract chemistry concepts and fostering higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

Students' low chemical literacy and scientific attitudes in understanding chemical concepts, particularly in green chemistry, pose significant challenges in chemistry education today. Traditional learning models are often less effective in fostering 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, which are essential for a more relevant and applicable chemistry education. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a STEM integrated with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' chemical literacy and scientific attitudes in green chemistry. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two experimental classes and two control classes. Each group participated in pretests and posttests to assess their chemical literacy and scientific attitudes. The analysis revealed that the PBL-STEM model significantly enhanced students' chemical literacy (N-Gain = 0.54) and scientific attitudes (N-Gain = 0.46) compared to traditional learning methods. Although the improvement in scientific attitudes was more pronounced, the increase in chemical literacy was relatively lower, indicating the necessity for adjustments in instructional approaches to deepen students' understanding of chemical concepts. The integration of green chemistry principles within the PBL-STEM model effectively connected chemistry education with global environmental challenges while also fostering 21st-century skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. This study concludes that the PBL-STEM model presents a promising alternative for enhancing the quality of chemistry education and preparing students to navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving world.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically synthesize research articles on the application of Educational for Sustainable Development (ESD) in chemistry learning based on their suitability with the research theme: sustainable development issues, ESD dimensions, SDGs, and chemistry concepts. The urgency of this research is to explore the potential of sustainable development issues in chemistry concepts as an implementation of ESD to help teachers who experience difficulties in integrating sustainable development issues into chemistry concepts. This research was conducted with a systematic literature review design that synthesized 23 articles from the ERIC, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords "ESD in Chemistry Learning" and "Implementation of ESD". The results of the systematic review raised six sustainable development issues used in chemistry learning: the use of conventional and biodegradable plastics, green pesticide use, green experiments, water pollution and scarcity, biodiesel from palm oil, and others. The environmental dimension is studied more often than the economic and social dimensions of ESD application in chemistry learning. The implementation of ESD has made the greatest contribution to SDG 4 (Quality Education) with six chemistry concepts that are often used to integrate sustainable development issues: acids and bases, thermochemistry, the periodic table of elements, macromolecules, reaction kinetics, and green chemistry. The variety of sustainable development issues, ESD dimensions, SDGs, and chemical concepts used in the application of ESD in chemistry learning shows that there are opportunities for chemistry learning to contribute to sustainable development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ sustainability consciousness based on its conceptual dimensions, determinant factors, and the relationships among knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) approach, guided by the PRISMA framework to ensure a structured and transparent process of literature identification, screening, and synthesis. The literature search was conducted using the Scopus database with keywords such as “sustainability consciousness in higher education,” “students’ environmental awareness,” and “sustainability consciousness among university students.” The initial search yielded 249 records, of which 24 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. The findings indicate that sustainability consciousness is a multidimensional construct consisting of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior that interact dynamically. The knowledge dimension is generally higher than the behavioral dimension, indicating a gap between students’ understanding and their actual practices. In addition, sustainability consciousness is influenced by internal factors such as environmental literacy and individual values, as well as external factors including education, curriculum, campus environment, and pedagogical approaches. The relationships among these dimensions are complex and non-linear, mediated by variables such as social norms and learning experiences. A key finding is the presence of a knowledge–action gap, demonstrating that increased knowledge does not necessarily lead to sustainable behavior. This study contributes by integrating the dimensions, determinants, and relationships of sustainability consciousness into a comprehensive analytical framework.
