Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the composition and comparison of species richness, diversity, and insect dominance in the phases of sorghum. This research was conducted from August to October 2021 in Lalang Village, Tebing Tinggi, at the location of a Sorghum monoculture (Sorghum bicolor). This study uses the purposive random sampling method, where insects are collected using 4 traps (yellow sticky trap, sweep net, pitfall trap, and light trap) installed according to standard regulations. The results showed that the insects identified in Sorghum consisted of 8 orders, 14 families (Chrysomelidae, Muscidae, Alydidae, Pentatomidae, Cicadellidae, Aphididae, Apidae, Sphecidae, Formicidae, Noctuidae, Acrididae, Grylidae, Aeshnidae, Libellulidae) with a total of 6499 individuals. There are 27 genera detected with 5 insect functional statuses, as pollinators (13 species), predators (5 species), herbivores (5 species), parasitoids (1 species), and decomposers (3 species). Knowing the functional status of insects in sorghum cultivation, it is predicted to control pests in an integrated manner in the future. The plant extracts, variances of pheromones, and the minimal use of chemicals in the integrated pest control system can increase the productivity of sorghum.

Abstract

The flood disaster mitigation education program aims to enhance the community's understanding and preparedness in facing disaster risks, particularly floods, which frequently occur in Tanjung Selamat Sub-district, North Sumatra. This initiative is driven by the high vulnerability of the area to flooding and the importance of equipping the public with knowledge on self-rescue procedures before, during, and after a disaster. The method employed in this community service program was descriptive, involving public outreach, hands-on mitigation training, interactive discussions, and program evaluation. Activities included expert-led sessions, evacuation simulations using role-playing techniques, and the use of audiovisual media to reinforce participants' understanding. The results indicated improved knowledge, skills, and awareness among participants regarding flood mitigation. Community members from various age groups and social backgrounds actively participated and showed enthusiasm throughout the program. Additionally, flood mitigation tools such as life jackets and informational materials were distributed to support preparedness efforts. This initiative demonstrates that structured and participatory education can build responsive, resilient, and compassionate communities in the face of disaster. The flood disaster mitigation education is expected to serve as a model for empowering communities in disaster-prone areas.

Abstract

The community service activity was carried out by the community service team under the International Cooperation Service Scheme of the Community Service Research Institute (LPPM) of the University of Sumatera Utara (USU) by inviting the Pujakesuma community, family welfare empowerment, and the community at Griya Nusa Tiga, aiming to introduce and implement hydroponic and fish cultivation in the bucket (Budikdamber) techniques to participants through lectures and practical training sessions. The community services were conducted from August to September 2024, involving 40 respondents from Griya Nusa Tiga Complex, Medan, North Sumatra. Research data was obtained through field observations, data collection, and interviews. The hydroponic systems applied to mustard greens and kale demonstrated advantages in terms of shorter harvest times and efficient yields; meanwhile, cultivating catfish in a bucket with the benefit of kale insects in the system improved plant quality and productivity, reduced pesticide use, and lowered production costs. The training also included hands-on practice, nutrient and water management, and result evaluation, allowing 40 participants to analyze challenges and solutions. Overall, the activity contributed to environmental sustainability, supporting community development through more efficient and eco-friendly practices with significant economic and ecological benefits.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look at the level of interest and the factors that influence it in the use of vegetable fungicides as anthracnose disease prevention in curly red chili plants. This study was carried out from February 2023 to July 2023. Data collection methods included observation, questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability and interviews. Methods of data analysis using a Likert scale and multiple linear regression. The results of the study showed that the level of interest of farmers in the use of vegetable fungicides as a prevention of anthracnose disease in curly red chili plants was very high with an interest of 84.71%. The results of multiple linear regression on the factors that influence farmer interest are obtained by the following equation Y = 3.739 - 0.212X1 + 0.057X2 - 0.164X3 + 0.311X4 + 0.235X5 + 0.381X6. Simultaneously the variables of age, farming experience, land area, role of extension workers, community environment, and facilities and infrastructure have a joint effect on farmers' interests. Partially the variables of age, land area, role of extension workers, community environment, and facilities and infrastructure have a significant effect, while the variable farming experience has no significant effect.
