Abstract

Pongok Island possesses small islands surrounded by waters with some primary commodities of sea farming. Seeking appropriate locations for marine aquaculture is a careful planning step to acquire optimal results. The sustainability of sea farming areas should be set based on considering species for easy implementation. This research aimed to analyse the area's suitability for aquaculture activities of seaweed cultivation, rearing groupers, and lobsters in floating net cages, and pearl oyster farming.  This research occurred from June to November 2022 in Pongok Islands, South Bangka Regency, Indonesia. The method used in this research consisted of parameters weighting and scoring for cultivating seaweeds, groupers, or lobsters utilizing floating net cages and pearl oysters.  Sea water samples analysis was processed in the Marine Science Laboratory of Bangka Belitung University and PT Global Quality Analytical, Bogor – West Java.  Collected data were then scaled based on expert justification of scaling priority on aquaculture suitability. The mapping area of sea farming locations based on potential resources was then determined using map software. This research indicates that cultivating seaweeds is recommended to be established in two stations, 1 (149.79 ha) and 2 (186.46 ha), that are very suitable (S1) and the suitable (S2) categories, respectively. Station 3 (325.41 ha) and 4 (4.11 ha) are grouped into very suitable (S1) categories for pearl oysters and groupers or lobsters using floating net cages, respectively. The total estimate for sea farming in the waters of Pongok Island is 665.77 ha. Allocating seawater spaces should be assigned for sustainable fishery management. Maps of area suitability for sea farming can obviate conflicts in seawater areas.

Abstract

Freshwater lobster (Cherax quadricarinatus) is one of the freshwater commodities that has the potential to be cultivated and has economic value. However, the problem still faced by farmers is the quality of feed which can affect low growth and survival. This research aims to analyze the growth performance of juvenile lobsters fed silk worms and rice flour. This research used 30 juvenile lobster samples measuring 1-3 cm (+ 1 inch) that were around 30 days old per aquarium. The parameters observed were body length, body weight, and survival rate (SR) of juvenile lobsters and the water parameters measured were pH, temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS). The results of the research show that juvenile freshwater lobsters are able to consume silk worms and rice flour so that juvenile lobsters can be classified as omnivores. Feeding treatment in the form of a combination of silk worms and rice flour showed the best results for growth in length, weight and SR of juvenile freshwater lobsters. Juvenile growth during 32 days of rearing fed a combination of silkworm and rice flour resulted 4.30 cm + 0.02 cm in a length, 1.43 g + 0.01 g in weight, and SR 80%.

Abstract

The dynamics and diversity of bivalve resources can be influenced by various human activities at the beach. At Pukan Beach, Activities such as harvesting Asiatic Hard Clam (Meretrix meretrix), local community tin mining, shrimp pond farming, and inputs of organic materials from surrounding rivers and freshwater sources can affect the presence of Asiatic Hard Clam in its habitat. This research aims to analyze the abundance and distribution patterns Asiatic Hard Clam and the environmental factors influencing them. Data collection was conducted from February to April 2023 at Pukan Beach, Bangka Regency, using a systematic method and 2 x 2m2 quadrats consisting of 4 stations with a total of 48 sampling plots. The observed environmental parameters included water temperature, salinity, water pH, substrate, dissolved oxygen (DO), calculation of total organic matter (BOT), and soil pH, which were then analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA).The research findings showed that the lowest abundance values were found at Station 4, while the highest were at Station 3. The average clam abundance at Pukan Beach ranged from 0.03 to 0.22 ind.m-2, indicating a minimum or low abundance level, with an average value of Ip was 0.05, suggesting a clustered distribution pattern. Based on the principal component analysis (PCA), the environmental parameters that most influenced clam abundance were BOD and DO, and the most suitable habitat preference for the clams was identified at Station 4.It is recommended that clam harvesting be based on the size of the shell's length and width, specifically during the adult or mature stage when individuals are larger than 3.10 – 4.00 cm. Smaller clams should be returned to their natural habitat to allow for growth and reproduction.

Abstract

Reef fishes are important components of a healthy coral ecosystem. However, when coral reefs are degraded, reef fishes also lose their habitat resulting in a decline in reef fish production and sustainable livelihood for the communities depending on it. In this study, we determined the status of reef fish communities in an artificial reef at PT Artha Cipta Langgeng in the Penyusuk waters of Bangka Regency, Indonesia. Data on reef fish communities were collected using the underwater visual census (UVC) method, including in situ and ex-situ environmental parameters. A total of 2,987 individuals belonging to 12 reef fish species and five families were recorded across three stations. The abundance of reef fish ranges from 45 to 60 ind/m², categorized as highly abundant. Diversity, evenness, and dominance indices were calculated at  1.18-1.49, 0.56-0.65, and 0.26 -0.36, respectively which are categorized as low to moderate. The environmental parameters in the artificial reef are still within the standard limit for a reef ecosystem. The study emphasizes the importance of artificial reefs as an alternative to a degraded coral reef ecosystem in supporting the thriving existence of reef fishes in the Penyusuk waters.
