Abstract

The damage rate of mangrove forests in Indonesia is considered as the fastest and largest in the world. The reduced density of mangroves can be influenced by the water quality and the organic matter content around the mangrove ecosystem, causing changes in the mangrove leaves both in the shape of the length and width. This study was conducted in the mangrove ecosystem in the western part of Dumai City, with the aim of determining the morphometric size of the leaves of Rhizophora apiculata and its relationship with the content of organic matter in the sediment. The method used in this study was survey method, where observations and sampling were performed directly in the field and some of samples were analyzed in the laboratory. Mangrove density obtained from the research results ranges from 1966.66 - 4700 ind/ha, organic matter content 10.88 -17.21%. The morphometric size of the leaf length varies from 13.03 - 15.05 cm, the leaf width varies from 4.65 - 5.42 cm, and the length of the petiole varies from 1.59 - 1.91 cm. There is no significant relationship between the mangrove leaf morphometric with sediment organic matter in the studied area.

Abstract

Wildlife Sanctuary of Danau Pulau Besar Danau Bawah is surrounded by a forestconservation area of industrial timber estates and villages inhabited by indigenous peopleswhere their lives are very dependent on the forest. The consequence of these conditions is thatforest degradation is quite serious as the encroachment of trees and forest conversionpractices to agriculture and plantations. This study aims to gain estimation on forestencroachment and total loss of trees resulting in a decline in floristic diversity in this region.Data collection on forest encroachment map using satellite imagery analysis was done byusing Supervised Classification technique. The area assessed is conservation forest areaswhich has been encroached upon or degraded areas. Vegetation data were collected by usingthe plot method that illustrates the potential, type, density values, dominance of vegetationand its importance value index. The results of extensive analysis of vegetation encroachmentillustrated the potential value of forest degradation rate. Conservation forests area wasdegraded up to± 2339.73 ha or 8.29% of the total area, while the estimated loss due to theencroachment of trees during the period 1998 to 2012 reached 550,819.24 m3 or equal to39,344.23 m3 trees per year, or 3278.69 m3 per month and 109.29 m3 per day.

Abstract

The research was conducted from July to December 2018 which aims to estimate the amount of carbon stock storage in wetland ecosystems that cover the near shore (mangrove) to upper land (peatland) in Sungai Tohor Village. Survey method was applied and sampling was done by non-destructive method that is without harvesting, so as not to change the ecological function of the forest. Data of carbon pool biomass was analysed and calculated in laboratory with allometric equations to extrapolate biomass. The results showed that the total carbon stock storage in the wetland ecosystem that covered the mangrove area to the peat area was equal to 51499.10 tons C / ha and was able to absorb CO2 by 70901.78 tons CO2/ ha. The largest total carbon deposits are in the mangrove region which is equal to 31525.83 tons C/ha, while the peat region has the ability to store lower carbon with a total value of 19973.27 tons C/ha.

Abstract

Pests that are often a household problem in several cities in Indonesia are mosquitoes, rats, cockroaches, flies. Causes of settlement pests are dirty environments, food scraps, rubbish, and waterlogged gutters / ditches. The presence of pests in the house causes occupants to control pesticides. Pesticides are used primarily to control mosquitoes, ants, flies, cockroaches, mice and termites. This research is a descriptive research that aims to explain, detail and make a description of a phenomenon or object under study. The target population in this study is households residing in Pekanbaru City, namely in the Districts of Tenayan Raya, Sail and Pekanbaru City with three clean, medium and dirty categories. Determination of the sample is done purposively with multistage sampling technique. The sample was determined purposively with multistage sampling technique and the total sample was 101 households. The data obtained were nominal, ordinal and ratio, analyzed the relationship between these data using chi-square. The results showed that the physical environmental factors of housing settlements that affect the presence of residential pests are dirty environments caused by garbage and dirty drainage / ditches. Meanwhile, biotic environmental factors in residential housing that affect the presence of pests are plants grown in residential areas in the form of ornamental plants and unkempt shade plants. The dirty condition of the residential environment is due to the lack of environmental cleaning activities and the not yet routine transportation of waste from residential homes to landfills. In addition, there is less care for ornamental plants and shade in the yard, such as pruning.

Abstract

The decline in mangrove vegetation density and the area of mangrove forests in the coastal province of Riau occurred due to the logging of mangrove forests and the conversion of mangrove forests into other uses such as industrial estates. This study aims to collect a database of mangrove ecosystems which includes the ecological structure of R. apiculata in Riau Province. Collecting data of mangrove vegetation condition was done by transect line and plot. The line transect was drawn from the reference point (the outer mangrove stand) with the direction perpendicular to the coastline to the mainland and made plots according to the category. The results showed that the population of R. apiculata was found in large numbers at Station 3 (350 ind) and a small/small amount was found at Station 1 (137 ind). In addition, Stations 1, 2 and 4 have only one grouping population of R. apiculata based on the Bhattacharya method, while Station 3 has two groupings. Furthermore, the highest R. apiculata density for tree category was obtained at Station 4 (1433.33 ind/m2), saplings category at Station 3 (10488.89 ind/m2) and seedlings category at Station 4 (3666667 ind/m2). Furthermore the water temperature ranged from 28.3 – 30.7°C, salinity 27.3 – 31.3, pH 7.3 – 7.9, DO 5.2 – 6.4 and redox potential ranged from 102 – 124 mV. Based on the standard criteria and guidelines for determining mangrove damage according to the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 201 of 2004, the population density of R. apiculata at the research location is still classified as medium and refers to the Decree of the State Minister of Environment No. 51 of 2004 concerning Sea Water Quality Standards for Marine Biota, as a whole the range of measured water quality parameters is still within tolerance limits for life mangroves.

Abstract

Determination of heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in  different parts (muscle, bone, scale, intestine, gills and fin) of a croacker fish (S. russelli) collected from Dumai coastal waters were carried out during May to July 2009. The concentration of each metal was determined by AtomicAbsorption Spectrophotometer Perkin Elmer 3110 in the Marine Chemistry Laboratory, Marine Science Department University of Riau Pekanbaru. The results showed that Zn was found to be the highest concentrations in most of the fish body parts analyzed followed by Pb, Cu and Cd in both samples from the western and eastern regions of Dumai coastal waters. In general, the concentrations of all metals analyzed in the present study were higher in fish collected from the eastern region of Dumai coastal waters where more anthropogenic activities such as industries and human habitations along the coastal area were found. The concentration of heavy metals observed were Cd:  0.098 – 0.103, 0.189 – 0.283, 0.099 – 0.289, 0.107 – 0.302, 0.182 – 0.377 and 0.118 – 0.397; Cu: 0.130 – 0.198, 0.189 – 0.341, 0.082 – 0.073, 0.132 – 0.285, 0.520 – 0.746 and 0.175 – 0.337; Pb:  3.979 – 4.109, 4.144 – 4.601, 0.970 – 2.527, 2.853 – 4.367, 5.053 – 7.074 and 4.637 – 6.262 and Zn:  5.713 – 5.755, 7.956 – 8.558, 4.649 – 6.232, 5.730 – 7.745, 8.988 – 11.115 and 8.777 – 10.686 µg/g for muscle, bone, scale, intestine, gills and fins respectively. Concentrations of heavy metals in each body part of the fish were as follow: fin > gills > intestine > scale > bone > muscle for Cd; gills >  bone > fin > intestine > muscle > scale for Cu; gills > Fin > bone > intestine > muscle > scale for Pb and gills > fin > bone > intestine > scale > muscle for Zn. The concentrations of heavy metals in muscle were lower than other analyszed organs in the present study and this was considered to be an advantageous from the human health points of view as because muscle constitute the greatest mass of the fish that is consumed.
