Abstract

Abstract: The braking system is a critical component in vehicles, ensuring effective and safe deceleration. Disc brakes, commonly used in automotive applications, generate significant heat during operation, which if not managed properly, can lead to serious problems such as brake fading and component failure. This study reviews various methodologies and findings from previous research on thermal management in disc brakes using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other experimental methods. Key findings include the effectiveness of improved ventilation designs, the impact of cooling fins, and the role of composite materials in enhancing heat dissipation. The study also examines the influence of geometric design variations and operating conditions on thermal performance. The results highlight that advanced materials like ceramics, cross-ventilated rotors, and active cooling fins significantly improve thermal efficiency and reduce overheating risks. Furthermore, mathematical modeling techniques such as Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Distance Weighted Least Squares (DWLS) fitting models provide valuable insights for optimizing disc brake systems. The review underscores the importance of comprehensive thermal management strategies to ensure the safety and reliability of braking systems under various operational conditions. Future research should focus on addressing the limitations of current FEA models and developing more efficient materials and rotor designs.   Keywords: Braking System, Thermal Management, Finite Element Analysis

Abstract

Abstract. Pramana A, Nurhasanah, Sunaryo W, Rusdiansyah, Pranoto, H. 2026. Projecting climate change impacts on chalky grain rice in East Kalimantan, Indonesia and implications for heat-tolerant rice variety breeding. Asian J Agric 10 (1): g100147. https://doi.org/10.13057/asianjagric/g100147. Rising temperatures associated with climate change are increasing the incidence of Chalky Grain Rice (CGR), reducing grain quality. This study projects future CGR risk and identifies the level of heat-tolerance required for rice varieties to maintain acceptable grain quality under climate change in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Future CGR incidence was simulated using a temperature-based CGR model combined with bias-corrected climate projections under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP)2.6 and RCP 8.5 scenarios, along with simulations of rice varietal heat-tolerance under optimistic, median, and pessimistic conditions. Results indicate that even under the low-emission RCP2.6 scenario, most rice-growing areas are projected to exceed the 15% CGR threshold by the 2040s under the optimistic case. Under median conditions, substantially higher CGR levels are projected, particularly under RCP 8.5. To maintain CGR below acceptable limits, rice varieties capable of tolerating temperature increases of approximately 2-3.5°C above current conditions are required by the 2040s, while pessimistic scenarios under both RCPs demand heat-tolerance of up to 4°C. These findings highlight the urgent need to accelerate targeted breeding programs to develop heat-tolerant rice varieties capable of sustaining grain quality, meeting national standards, and remaining resilient under continued climate warming.

Abstract

Research related to rubber seed conversion to oil and activated carbon as filter media requires further exploration. Therefore, the main objective of this study to investigate the rubber seed oil as alternative energy and rubber seed Shell Activated Carbon (RSSAC). Thermo-chemical method conducted with separation process between the kernel and the shell. The process used temperatures of 550 and 600°C. Biodiesel was produced by a blending process using a frequency of 20kHz, temperature of 60oC and 2h holding time. In addition, the side product was converted into activated carbon through carbonization and activation using KOH. Air filter fabricated using three layers, where the top and bottom layers being non-woven and RSSAC in the middle. It compacted using hot-press method at temperature of 150°C for 60 s to produce an air filter media thickness of 3–5mm. The results show that there are several high compound concentrations i.e. CH4, aldehydes, and ketonestone. Several gases evolve, such as CO2, CO, CH4, H2O, ketone aldehyde, and HC. Microstructure analysis using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) of RSSAC shows that element C significantly increase up to 80%, while O, K, and Ca decreased up to 72%, 66% and 90%, respectively. RSSAC has a large surface area of 175.95m2/g, and it will have high effectiveness in improving indoor air quality (IAQ). This is indicated by the result of IAQ analysis where the humidity, temperature, CO, CO2, TVOC, and PM10 were lower than the acceptable limit of 70%, 27oC, 1000ppm, 10ppm, 3 ppm, and 0.15 mg/m3, respectively.
