Abstract

Repetition is a learning strategy that teachers have known many times and still use as it helps them teach the learning process in the classroom. This study investigated how student teachers use repetition in their first teaching practice experience. The researcher tried to find out the class of words that are most repeated by student teachers and also determined the function of repetition spoken by them in EFL classes. The data of this study came from the teaching practice videos from student teachers of English study program, Universitas Riau. This research used the framework Pragmatic analysis to analyze the function of repetition. From the study result, there were 144 repetitions spoken by six student teachers during teaching practice. Abstract

Most Indonesian educators are insufficient to address the importance of educating students about other cultures. This problem emerges as a result of foreign language teachers' lack of understanding of how to incorporate culture into language acquisition, particularly in English. This research aims to investigate culture's representation and examine the culture introduced in Indonesian textbooks for senior high school students who learn English as a foreign language. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with an intercultural perspective, the study systematically analyzes the cultural content and themes present in three Electronic English teaching textbooks: Bahasa Inggris X, Bahasa Inggris IX, and Bahasa Inggris XI revised edition (2017) by Kemdikbud RI. The analysis of the textbooks' contents is conducted using the framework developed by Cortazzi and Jin (1999), specifically focusing on Source Culture, Target Culture, and International Culture. These textbooks were selected as they are widely used in Indonesian senior high schools and are published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The findings of the study reveal that the dominance of source culture content is significant, while the representation of target culture and international culture is considerably low. Furthermore, among the 19 cultural motifs categorized as Big Culture and Little Culture, the prevalence of Little Culture themes is most notable. The findings of this research shed light on the existing disparity and call for a more comprehensive approach to cultural education in English language learning. By acknowledging the imbalance and addressing the representation of different cultures, educators can better equip students with intercultural competence and foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultural perspectives.

The results of this study show that the validity results obtained from the media expert is 85.71% which categorized as Valid, and the validity results from the material expert is 98.80% which categorized as Highly Valid. The results of the teacher response questionnaire showed 98.52% which was categorized as Very Practical, while the results of the student response questionnaire received 76.21% which was categorized as Practical. Therefore, the e-module was declared valid and feasible for seventh grade students at SMPN 17 Pekanbaru. The use of the e-module can serve an alternative teaching material and help improve students’ understanding of descriptive text, as well as broaden their understanding and appreciation of local culture, especially Malay buildings. Keywords: E-module, Riau Malay Culture, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Code-switching, the alternation between two or more languages, is a prevalent yet underexplored phenomenon in multilingual EFL classrooms in Indonesia. This study investigates the functional roles of code-switching employed by English teachers at SMAN 1 Rambah, emphasizing its pedagogical and managerial contributions. Addressing gaps in prior research, which primarily focus on English and Bahasa Indonesia, this study uniquely incorporates the role of local languages such as Mandailing and Malay. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, video recordings, and semi-structured interviews with two experienced English teachers. The analysis revealed five key functions of code-switching: explaining complex concepts, translating vocabulary, repeating for reinforcement, checking comprehension, and managing classroom interactions. These functions significantly enhance students' understanding, engagement, and overall learning experiences. However, excessive reliance on code-switching may impede immersive English language practice, presenting a pedagogical challenge. The findings underscore the importance of balancing code-switching with English immersion to optimize learning outcomes. This study extends the theoretical discourse on multilingual pedagogy by highlighting the strategic integration of local languages into EFL teaching. Implications include fostering a more inclusive and culturally responsive language education framework, which accommodates linguistic diversity while promoting English proficiency. These insights contribute to the global discourse on multilingual education, particularly in settings where linguistic and cultural diversity intersects with educational objectives.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of figurative language in beauty advertisements found in English magazines. The primary objective is to identify and interpret the types of figurative expressions employed in these advertisements and explore their effect on consumer perception and behavior. The research focuses on examining various figurative devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, and symbolism, and how these devices are used to enhance the appeal and persuasive power of beauty products. By analyzing a selection of advertisements from popular English magazines, the study demonstrates how figurative language is strategically utilized to create emotional appeal, shape brand identity, and influence purchasing decisions. The findings indicate that figurative language plays a crucial role in enhancing the emotional connection between consumers and beauty products, thereby contributing significantly to the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. This analysis highlights the importance of linguistic creativity in advertising, particularly in the beauty industry, where image and perception are central to marketing strategies.
