Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research aims at finding out how effective the use of comic strips in the process of learning English. Writing is a productive skill that is important to be learned at school. Yet, in the process of teaching writing the teacher rarely use appropriate, joyful, and effective media which make the students feel bored. The teacher should use interesting media to motivate the students. Hence, using comic strips as media of teaching can help the students to generate ideas and explore language in a creative way, especially in narrative texts. This research would answer the research question which has been stated : ‘Can the use of comic strips improve the ninth grade students’ ability in writing narrative texts?’. The sample of this research was the ninth grade students of SMP YLPI Marpoyan Program Plus Pekanbaru. The participants were 25 students (IX-2). This research was conducted in two cycles which consisted of eight meetings. The data were obtained through pre-test, post-test cycle 1, post-test cycle 2, and observation sheet for the students and the teacher. The results of this research showed good improvements in terms of students’ participation in teaching and learning process and the students’ writing ability. The Pre-Test score was 47,86 increased to 57,95 in Post-Test Cycle 1 and increased to 78,39 in Post-Test Cycle 2. The students’ activities were also increased from 52,8% in cycle 1 to 85,2% in Cycle 2. In conclusion, comic strips could be used as media of teaching writing narrative texts to increased the students’ writing ability. Comic strips could help the students to generate ideas and also could motivate the students to follow the lesson.   Keywords: Comic Strips, Media, Writing, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aims to discuss to what extent the teachers of MTs Darul Hikmah Boarding School Pekanbaru use ICT in their teaching and learning activities. The researcher used purposive technique sampling to determine the sample. The samples were 50 teachers. The data were gathered by distributing a set of questionnaire which design in the form of five points of the Likert scale. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2010. After analyzed the data, it can be revealed that the use of ICT by the teachers of MTs Darul Hikmah Boarding School Pekanbaru in their teaching and learning activities in general was in mediocre level category, with mean of 2.99. Specifically, the use of ICT by the teachers for class preparation was in mediocre level category, with the mean score of 3.14. Furthermore, the use of ICT by the teachers during teaching and learning process was in low level category, with the mean score of 2.60. Then, the use of ICT by the teachers as assessment was in high level category, with the mean score of 3.42.Keywords: A Study, ICT, teaching and learning activities

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to investigate the effect of Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Assyakirin Bangko Pusako in comprehending folklore. In conducting the research, pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design was used. The sample of this research was the students of class VIII E which consisted of 25 students. The pre-test was administered before the treatment. After the treatment was applied for four meetings using KWL Plus strategy, a post-test was administered. The data were analyzed using t-test formula. From the calculation, the writer found that the value of t-test was 9.005 while t-table was 2.063. Since the t-test value was larger than that of t-table, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there was a significant effect of Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Assyakirin Bangko Pusako in comprehending folklore.Key Words: Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy, reading comprehension, folklore

Abstract

Abstract: This research is a descriptive-quantitative research design which is aimed at investigating the difficulties of second semester students’ English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau in pronouncing English vowel. The subjects of this study were the second semester students’ English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau. 32 students employed in this study were given the Pronounciation Test. The findings of this study revealed that the student knew about their difficulties in pronouncing English vowel. This result showed that the participants had good pronounciation skill. Based on this research the mean score of second semester students of English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau were good.Key Words: Pronounciation, English Vowel, English Education Sudy Program.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is a descriptive-quantitative research design which aimed to investigate the vocabulary size of English study program students of Universitas Riau. The subjects of the study were the sixth-semester students majoring in English study program of Universitas Riau. Forty sample students were chosen using proportionate stratified random sampling. Students vocabulary size was measured Using Vocabulary Size Test created by Nation P. in 2007. The findings of this study revealed that the students knew about 8,080 word families. This result showed that the participants had good vocabulary mastery. Based on nation 2006 the mean score of students of English study program of Universitas Riau in sixth-semester were able to read complicated English text. In other words, sixth-semester students of English study program of Universitas Riau already capable to read scientific paper and can start to write thesis for their final task.Key Words: Vocabulary, Vocabulary Size Test, English Study Program.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at investigating the strategies in teaching reading comprehension used by English teachers of junior high schools in Rayon 2 Pelalawan Regency. Using total sampling, 63 teachers employed in this study were taken as the sample of this research. This study employed mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The quantitative data were collected from a questionnaire while the qualitative ones were obtained through semistructured interviews. The questionnaire consists of three categories; Matacognitive strategy instruction (planning, monitoring, and evaluating), Cognitive strategy instruction (visualization, and summarizing) and Social strategy instruction (Cooperative learning and asking questions). The interview was deliberately chosen for the researcher intended to understand the depth of the data. The findings of this study revealed that the teacher tent to use Metacognitive strategy instruction, Cognitive strategy instruction, and Social strategy instruction in teaching reading comprehension. This result showed that the most strategies used by 60 (95%) of teachers in Metacognitive strategy instruction is monitoring (96,3%), summarizing as Cognitive strategy instruction (84,7%) and asking questions as Social strategy instruction (86%). The lowest point of the strategy is evaluating (54%). There were also additional respondents through an interview that mostly used Metacognitive Strategy Instruction and Social Strategy Instruction. Meanwhile, since COVID-19, between teachers and students need to take online learning, using media online platforms such as google classroom, whatsapp, and youtube. Furthermore, an occurrence of some problems during the teaching-learning process was inevitable. Among some other problems, students’ extreme diversity, lack of facilities, lack of students’ motivation, and bad networks for online learning in reading activity.Key Words: Reading Comprehension, Teaching Strategy, Pelalawan Regency

Abstract

Abstract: This was a Classroom Action Research. This research was about the application of DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) to improve reading comprehension. The objective was to improve the ability of the second grade students of SMK Muhammdiyah 2 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension by using DRTA strategy. It was conducted to the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 pekanbaru especially XI AK 2 as the subject of research. Reading comprehension test and observation sheet were used as the tools of collecting the data. The result of this research showed that DRTA strategy could improve the students’ ability in comprehending reading texts. Students’ mean score improved from 46.62 in pre-test to 63.39 in post-test 1, and to 79.19 in post test 2. It is in line with the activeness of students that improved from post test 1 to post test 2. The students were able to identify the main idea, references, and supporting idea of the text. DRTA strategy could improve the students’ prior knowledge by predicting the text and confirm or revise their prediction. This research recommended that teacher could use DRTA strategy to improve students’ ability in reading comprehension since it was an effective strategy by predicting the text and then confirm or reject their prediction.Key words: DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) strategy, reading comprehension

Abstract

As one of activities in Extensive Reading classroom, Exploring Personal Reading Histories provides learners in exploring their reading experiences.   This study aimed to explore:  (1) What are the reading experiences of English study program learners of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Riau based in Exploring Personal Reading Histories?” (2) How are the reading experiences of English study program learners of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Riau based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories developing reading interest?”It was a case study and the data were collected through the document of learners ‘reading histories.  The result of this study found that:  (1) the reading experiences of English study program learners of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Riau based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories is individual contexts and processes in becoming competent for each level. (2) The reading experiences of English study program learners of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Riau based on Exploring Personal Reading Histories developing reading interest are through reading experiences developing processes (parent’s and teachers’ role, learners’ positive attitude, reading materials for each level, reading activities, building critical thinking). This study suggests implementing Exploring Personal Reading Histories in Extensive Reading course. It is also recommended conducting deep study on Exploring Personal Reading Histories in developing reading interest by using socio-cultural theory and interviews as additional theory and interview.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out students’ difficulties of on understanding analytical exposition texts. This was descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was the second-year students at SMA Negeri 9 Pekanbaru and one class at the second grade was chosen as the sample by using clustering-random-sampling. This research utilized a reading test and a  questionnaire as the instruments. The results of this research revealed that students faced several difficulties to understand analytical exposition texts based on 8 indicators, namely finding the main idea, finding factual information, finding references and inferences, finding vocabulary, identifying the social function, identifying the generic structure, and identifying language features of the analytical exposition text. Moreover, it was found that students had difficulties in identifying the social function (56%) which was categorized as high, in identifying the generic structure (54%) which was categorized as medium, and  in the language features of the text (54%) which was categorized as medium. Then, data from the questionnaire showed that students had problems in understanding the text, in reading interest, and the lack of material review. Thus, it was concluded that the second-year students at SMA Negeri 9 Pekanbaru had difficulties on reading analytical exposition text. It was recommended for the students to learn and practice more about analytical exposition text. Then, it was suggested for English teachers to give more detailed explanation and exercises about analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the significant effect of Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students at SMK Dar El Hikmah Pekanbaru. This research was Pre-experimental with one group Pre-test Post-test design. The population of this research was the second year students of SMK Dar El Hikmah Pekanbaru. All of the population were taken as the samples selected by using total sampling technique. This research administered a reading test consisting of 40 multiple-choice items in the pre-test and post-test. The mean score in pre-test was 60.15  while the mean score in post-test was 74.97. To determine the difference between pre-test and post-test, this research used t-test formula. After analyzing the data, it was found that the t-test score was 8.782 meaning that it was higher than t-table (2034). From the result of data analysis, it was concluded that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted. Thus, Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy significantly improved the reading comprehension of the second year students at SMK Dar El Hikmah Pekanbaru. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy was effective on improving the students’ reading comprehension, particularly in narrative text.
