Abstract

Buchori D, Rizali A, Rahayu GA, Mansur I. 2018. Insect diversity in post-mining areas: Investigating their potential role as bioindicator of reclamation success. Biodiversitas 19: 1696-1702. Reclamation can be a pivotal process to return an ecosystem to its condition prior to human disturbance, by recreating a landscape so that its structure and function closely resemble a natural community. Unfortunately, there is a lack of empirical data as to whether reclamation efforts successfully establish sustainable of the ecosystem or not. The objective of this research was to study insect diversity in post-mining areas and investigate their potential role as bioindicators of reclamation success. An ecological research was conducted in post-mining reclamation areas managed by PT. Berau Coal in Binungan, East Kalimantan. We selected sub-areas that had been subject to reclamation efforts for varying periods, ranging from 2 to 10 years, for observation. We also used an area of undisturbed natural forest as a comparison. Inside each of these subareas of different reclamation age, insects were sampled using pitfall traps and malaise traps along a 100-meter transect. Our results showed that insect diversity differed in areas of different reclamation age. Based on CCA revealed that environmental factors i.e. pioneer tree age, vegetation diversity and soil chemistry (N total) affected the diversity of insects in the reclamation area. In particular, NMDS analysis showed different species composition in ant communities found in subareas of varying reclamation age. We conclude that ants are the most useful potential bioindicator to assess reclamation success in post-mining areas.

Abstract. Sefrila M, Ghulamahdi M, Purwono Melati M, Mansur I. 2021. Diversity and abundance of arbuscular fungi mycorrhizal (AMF) in rhizosphere Zea mays in tidal swamp. Biodiversitas 22: 5071-5076. This study aims to find out the diversity and dominance of AMF spores and look at the morphology of fungi mycorrhizal arbuscular fungi that exist in the rooting area of corn (Zea mays L.) crops in the tidal swamp. The study was conducted in September 2020. Soil sampling at the tidal swamp village of Mulyasari Tanjung Lago District, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, Indonesia randomly sampling the corn root zone method. The research stages are soil sampling, soil chemistry analysis, AMF isolation and trapping, and morphological identification of AMF spores. The results showed the number of spores found in soil samples in the corn crop rhizosphere before trapping was less when compared to after trapping. The spores' shape is round, oblong, and oval, with colors ranging from clear, yellow, to brown. AMF spores found come from 2 genera namely (Acaulospora scrobiculata, A. bireticulata, A. mellea, A. laevis) and Glomus (Glomus monosporum, G. constrictum, G. manihotis).

Abstract

Abstract. Juniarto A, Hardiwinoto S, Faridah E, Mansur I. 2025. Regeneration status and floristic composition at pioneer stands on reclaimed ex-coal mine sites in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 3446-3459. Understanding the role of pioneer species is crucial for optimizing post-mining reclamation and supporting biodiversity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate and compare the regeneration status and floristic composition of pioneer stands at different ages within a reclaimed coal mine site in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra. By using nested plot sampling, diversity was assessed through Important Value Index (IVI), species richness, Shannon-Wiener Index (H'), and Pielou Evenness Index (J'). The results showed regeneration patterns: Melaleuca cajuputi dominated seedling (IVI: 93.3-200.0%) and sapling stages (IVI: 141.3-200.0%) in all stands, while E. cyclocarpum dominated pole (IVI: 70.4-273.5%) and tree stages (IVI: 229.7-252.5%) in older stands. M. cajuputi supported 10 naturally regenerating species, slightly more than the 9 found in E. cyclocarpum stands. Across both stands, Acacia mangium and Pterospermum javanicum dominated sapling, pole, and tree stages, whereas Commersonia bartramia dominated exclusively in M. cajuputi stands. The community exhibits low to moderate diversity and moderate uniformity (H’: 0.57-1.34; J’: 0.46-0.69). The complementary roles of M. cajuputi in early recruitment and E. cyclocarpum in structural growth promoted ecosystem recovery. Regeneration is successful, but ecological recovery is limited by low diversity and dominance of a few species.

Abstract

Tidal lands have considerable potential for sugarcane expansion but are constrained by low phosphorus availability, soil acidity, and low productivity under conventional systems. Despite advances in water-saturated cultivation and the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), their combined effects with phosphate fertilization in sugarcane–soybean intercropping systems remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of AMF inoculation and phosphate fertilizer rates, as well as their interaction, on crop productivity and land use efficiency. A field experiment was conducted on tidal land in Banyuasin, South Sumatra, using a randomized complete block design with two factors and three replications. The treatments consisted of AMF inoculation (without and with local AMF derived from maize) and phosphate fertilizer rates (0, 36, 72, and 108 kg ha⁻¹ P₂O₅) under a 4-month water-saturated cultivation system. Productivity and land equivalent ratio (LER) were used as key indicators. The results showed that the interaction between AMF inoculation and phosphate fertilizer rates was not significant for sugarcane productivity. However, AMF inoculation significantly increased the productivity of both sugarcane and soybean in intercropping and monoculture systems. In contrast, phosphate fertilizer rates did not significantly affect land use efficiency. The intercropping system consistently produced LER values greater than 1 (1.55–1.73), indicating higher land-use efficiency than monoculture systems. These findings demonstrate that AMF inoculation plays a more important role than phosphate fertilization in improving crop productivity under water-saturated tidal conditions.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the effect of exopolysaccharide-producing (EPS) bacteria on rice growth and yield under mercury stress induced by applying 40 mg HgCl? to each bucket containing 10 kg of soil. The research was conducted on a plastic-house scale in Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, from December 2025 to March 2026. The experimental design used was a two-factor factorial completely randomized design. The first factor was rice variety (IR 64 and Sertani). The second factor was no bacterial treatment versus bacterial consortium treatment (Priestia megaterium, Priestia aryabhattai, Pseudarthrobacter defluvii, and Burkholderia vietnamiensis). Each treatment was replicated three times. The results showed that there was no interaction between bacterial treatment and the tested rice varieties. In the IPB 9G and Sertani cultivars, the bacterial consortium increased tillers per hill, total productive tillers per hill, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight. It also increased 1,000-grain weight, filled-grain weight per panicle and per hill, and the number of filled grains per panicle. Compared with the control, the bacterial consortium treatment increased filled grain weight per hill by 25.76% in the IPB 9G variety and by 60.77% in the Sertani variety. Based on PCA, the variables contributing to PC1 were panicle length (PL) (0.925), PW (0.869), and PH (0.859). Correlation analysis showed that panicle weight (PW) and number of filled grains per panicle (NFGPP) (r = 0.98).
