Abstract

Combo nursery technique is a technique where seedlings/cuttings of Shorea leprosula, Gliricidia sepium, and Brachiaria decumbens grass were planted in one polybag to support mining reclamation. To reduce competition effects among the three species, optimum media and size of polybag need to be investigated. The objective of this experiment is to analyse the effect of size of polybag and media composition on the growth of S. leprosula, G. sepium, and B. decumbens grass in the combo nursery technique. The experiment used Randomised Complete Design in Factorial with two factors, i.e. media compositions (soil : compost (2 : 1, v/v), (1 : 1, v/v), (1 : 2, v/v), and soil : compost : rice husk (7:3:1, v/v/v); and size of polybag (15 x 20 cm, 20 x 20 cm, dan 25 x 25 cm). Each treatment had four replications, and each replication consisted of four polybags. The results showed no significant interaction effects between the composition of media and the size of polybag; however, media compositions of soil: compost (1:1) and (1:2), and the sizes of polybag 20 x 20 cm and 25 x 25 cm significantly eliminated competition and significantly increased the growth of S. leprosula and the number of tiller of B. decumbens grass.Keywords: Brachiaria decumbens, Gliricidia sepium, mining reclamation, nursery, Shorea leprosula

Abstract

Vegetative propagation by grafting is an alternative method for merbau [Instia bijuga (Colebr.) O.K] propagation. One of the advantages of grafting that is  mostly used in seed production  that will be planted in seed orchard and it is useful for saving the merbau genetics. The research used Top Cleft Grafting method and completely randomized design with two factors. The first  factor is rootstock treatment which has diameter between 4-6 mm and 6.1-8 mm. The second factor is a scion phase type treatment which has dormant type and active type. Based on ANOVA, it is known that the rootstock and scion phase type treatments do not have significant influence on survival percentage and disease resistance percentage. But, interaction between them have a significant influence on a disease resistance percentage. According to the result of research, it is  known that the average of survival percentage of  Merbau grafting is 21.67%.

Abstract

Nontimber forest products (NTFPs) represent sources of income from tropical forest, but some NTFP species have decreased in population and become endangered due to overexploitation. There is increasing concern that the planting stock of Dyera polyphylla is not sufficient to sustain the yield of NFTPs. The beneficial root colonizing rhizosphere bacteria, the so-called plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have been known to carry out many important ecosystem processes, such as those involved in the nutrient cycling and/or seedling establishment. The roots of most plant species associate with certain soil fungi and establish what are known as mycorrhiza. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of two arbuscular miycorrhizal (AMF) fungi, Glomus sp., Gigaspora sp. and thirteen strains of hizoplane bacteria (CK32, FL.13.2.1, JW1, JW6, JW9, JW13, JW14, CK26, CK4, JW3a, SB, NT, CR.R1), on the early growth of D. polyphylla, under greenhouse condition. Percentage of AMF colonization, plant growth, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentration were measured after 150 days of planting. The results showed that the percentage of AM colonization of D. polyphylla was 100%. Colonization by Glomus sp. significanly increased plant height by 18,95% and diameter by 16,16% compared to those non AMF. Combination of bacterial and AMF inoculant between JW13 and Glomus sp. increased shoot weight by as much as 36,28% from control and increased N concentration by 69,59% compared to those of non inoculate a seedlings. Combination of JW1 and Gigaspora sp. increased P concentration by as much as 42,05% compared to those of non inoculate seedlings. Despite the difficulty of selecting a multifunctional microbial consortia, appropriate microbial combinations can be recommended for a biotechnological input related to improvement of plant performance.

Abstract

Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Roxb. Miq.) is one kind of industrial tree that grows fast (fast growing species), as a producers of wood to meet the demands of Indonesian timber which continues to increase. In the 70's 100% wood industry in Indonesia only rely on natural forests as a source of supply. The rate of degradation natural forests continues to increase causing sharply reduced timber supply. Jabon is one kind of superior wood that can be developed through Industrial Plantation Forest and the Community Forest. However, the silviculture information in its development is still limited, especially the profit of advanced fertilization and selection area. The aim of this study was to determine the growth of jabon in less optimum environment (poor drainage and under shade conditions), to determine the influence of fertilizer application on the growth of jabon and to get the optimum dose of fertilizer application.

Abstract

Addition of compost could increase plant growth. Compost derived from banana stem could be added as admixture in nursery medium for growing jabon seedlings.  This research studied the effect of addition of various composts on the growth of jabon  (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) seedlings. The objectives of this study were: (1) to test the quality of compost produced from banana stem in improving the growth of jabon seedlings, and  (2) to learn the effect of composts from banana stem and other composts existing in the market (Ofer, Cocopeat, Guano and  Andam) on the growth of jabon seedlings.

Abstract

Coal   mining   in   Indonesia  mostly   are   conducted  using  open   pit   mining   system.   The   method   causing exposure  of mineral sulphide and triggered the production  of acid mine drainage (AMD) when oxidized by O2  and met with water. The problem is encountered by most companies  engaged in the coal mining, including PT. Mandiri Intiperkasa. An effort for handling  the   AMD    has   been   done  by establishment  of settling pond   that   was   planted   with   tifa   grass (Typha angustifolia).  The   grass   has   been   khown   for   its ability   to   neutralize   pH   and   at   the   same   time   absorb heavy   metals. However, in term of a long term use of the so called wetland area, it is regarded as non-productive  approach. Therefore, it need to sought types of commercial trees species that could survive and grow productively in wetland area to treat the AMD.          Treatments were asfollows: a. a combinat ion of species of tifa grass and cajuput (Melaleuca leucadendron Linn.); b. tifa  and  longkida   (Nauclea   orientalis   Linn.),   and  c. tifa  only.   Seedlings  were  observed  for  four  weeks.  Variables observed were: diameter growth, high growth, pH of the AMD, the weight of dried plants, the ratio (apa?), the roots and shoot nutrient analyses, and analysis of mud. The increase in the pH of AMD occurs every week on each unit test. Both types either cajuput and longkida able to survive and grow well for four weeks in the wet land flooded with AMD.

Abstract

Mining exploitation activities include opening land activities, topsoil removal, dredging and stockpiling could pose a negative impact to the environment. The impact of mining activities may include the opening of forest canopies and soil layer, soil erosion, sedimentation, decreased fertility  and land stability, destruction of wildlife habitat, and the environment contamination for human beings, the loss of plant species diversity, pollution of waterways, and drastic changes as a result of the loss of function of the forest microclimate. By the Indonesian law, mining companies are responsible for the reclamation of their ex-mine sites. Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) is a local tree species which can be planted as  pioneer tree species on ex-mine sites. It is a fast growing species from the family of Rubiaceae having many uses. Objectives of the research were to observe the effects of different seed source  and fertilizer application on the growth of jabon on an ex-mine sites of PT Kaltim Prima Coal at Sangatta, East Kalimantan Province.  The results of the research show that jabon seedlings with seed source from Malang are more superior than from Sangatta, and 50 g NPK fertilizer per seedlings increased growth of jabon seedlings significantly.

Abstract

Open area due to mining activities could cause erosion and sedimentation. Planting cover crops has been a standard practice to reduce erosion and it is part of mine reclamation steps. Cover crops commonly used, such as Pueraria javanica, Calopogonium muconoides, and Centrosema pubescens could not grow well on acidic soil and they strangle tree seedlings co-planted with crops. Therefore, they need high input, such as liming, compost and fertilizer application, and high cost for maintenance. Alternative cover crop non-strangling species that could survive on acid soil is needed. Arachis pintoi, Desmodium heterophyllum and Paspalum conjugatum species could be alternative species for cover crop, but they do not produce sufficient seeds for a large scale planting. They could only be propagated using cutting of stems of stolone. Co-planting of the plants with tree seedling in the same polybag would be one alternative to transplant the plants to the field without additional cost. However, a study should be conducted to observe the effect of co-planting on the growth of the tree seedlings. The aim of the study was to obtain information on effect of cover crops species on the growth of samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus), and the growth rates of different cover crop species that was co-planted with the samama seedlings. The results showed that all cover crops species did not significantly reduce the growth of samama seedlings. All cover crop species has a potential for cover crops, but Desmodium heterophyllum has the highest survival, growth, and branch production compared to other species.Keywords: Anthocephalus, Arachis pintoi, cover crops, Desmodium heterophyllum, Paspalum conjugatum

Abstract

Mined land reclamation is important in restoring environmental conditions back to conditions prior to mining activites. The purpose of this research is to observe the effect manure on samama (Anthocepalus macrophyllus), jabon (Anthocepalus cadamba) and sengon buto (Enterelobium cylocarpum) seedling growth on coal ex-mine site.. The research was conducted on mined site of PT. Tunas Inti Abadi, South Kalimantan. Experimental design used in this research was factorial in completely randomized design (CRD), with factors are spesies and dose of manure. Growth parameters measured were height and diameter growth of the seedlings. The results showed that the dose of manure significantly affected diameter growth, but did not significantly affect height growth of seedlings. Highest diameter growth was made by sengon buto. Spesies did not significantly affect diameter, but they showed significant differences on height growth rate. Sengon buto is the fastest growing species in term of height. Interaction between the dose of manure and species of plant affect only on diameter. The best species among the three spesies tested was sengon buto given 3 kg of manure per seedling.Keywords: Anthocepalus cadamba, Anthocepalus macrophyllus, Enterelobium cyclocarpum, mining, reclamation

Abstract

The main problem of reclamation activities in the postmining land was marginal land that could not support the growth of plants, due to pH and the low level of nutrient. So that, the selection of local species which adaptable and the appropriate silviculture treatment was needed. Jabon (A. cadamba) is one of local tree species that had high prospect, because jabon classified into fast growing species, able to adapted various site conditions, and the silviculture treatment was relatively easy. Dolomit and gypsum were materials that contained of Ca (Calcium), which able being applied to increase the soil pH. This objectives research was to determine the effect of dolomit, crude gypsum and manure fertilizer on the growth of Jabon in postmining land at PT. Tunas Inti Abadi. The fertilizers treatment consisted of three treatments. There were 2 kg of manure fertilizer (N), 2 kg of manure fertilizer + 200 g of dolomit (KN), and 2 kg of manure fertilizer + gipsum 200 g (GN). The parameters that be measured were diameter, height, number of leaves, crown diameter and percentage of living. The combination of dolomit and manure fertilizear had significant effect on the 95% confidence interval the diameter of Jabon.Keywords: calcification, fertilizer, jabon, reclamation
