Abstract

This paper describes the use of remotely sensed data to measure vegetation variables such as basal area, biomass and stand volume. The objective of this research was developed regression models to estimate basal area (BA), aboveground biomass (AGB), and stand volume (SV) using Landsat-based vegetation indices. The examined vegetation indices were SAVI, MSAVI, EVI, NBR, NBR2 and NDMI. Regression models were developed based on least-squared method using several forms of equation, i.e., linear, exponential, power, logarithm and polynomial. Among those models, it was recognized that the best fit of model was obtained from the exponential model, log (y) = ax + b for estimating BA, AGB & SV. The MSAVI had been identified as the most accurate independent variable to estimates basal area with R² of 0.70 and average verification values of 16.39% (4%-32.66%); while the EVI become the best independent variable for estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) with R2 of 0.72 and average of verification values of 18,10% (9%-28.01%); and the NDMI was recognized to be the best independent variable to estimate stand volume with R2 of 0.69 and average of verification values of 24.37% (-15%-38.11%).

Abstract

Abiotic stress is a limiting factor for plant growth and development. The use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can reduce the negative effects of abiotic stress. This study aimed to determine the tolerance of Nauclea orientalis inoculated with mycorrhizae to drought and waterlogging stresses. This research was carried out at the Indonesian Mycorrhizal Association’s greenhouse and Forestry laboratory University of Halu Oleo in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, from March to June 2019. The study used a factorial completely randomized design consisting of two factors. The first factor was Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) inoculations (A) consisting of a control, AMF types of Acaulospora sp.-1, and Claroideoglomus etunicatum.  The secod factor was environmental stress treatments (B) consisting of a control, soil moisture 25% of field capacity, 50% of field capacity, inundated as high the polybag (9 cm high) and inundated over the polybag. The results showed that local AMF was effective in improving plant growth. Interaction between inoculation of Acaulospora sp.-1 and environmental stress significantly increased AMF colonization on the N. orientalis roots. Inoculation of C.etunicatum significantly improved the N. orientalis growth. The treatment of drought stress with a field of 50% field capacity negatively influenced plant dry weight and the relative growth of the N. orientalis.

Abstract

Aren is one type of plant that has the potential to be developed because all parts of the plant can be used. Currently, the cultivation of sugar palm is still traditional and far less than other types of Arecaceae family. The research was conducted from August to October 2016 at the nursery site, and analysis of spore types and AMF colonization in the SEAMEO BIOTROP Bogor Silviculture Laboratory. This research was conducted on palm seedlings that were 19 months old. This study used a completely randomized design with 2 factors, namely P fertilization and AMF inoculation. The P fertilization factor has 2 levels, namely without P fertilization and given P fertilization. The inoculation factor for AMF consisted of 3 levels, namely without AMF inoculation, indigenous AMF, and my cover AMF. The results showed that P fertilization treatment and AMF inoculation did not significantly affect all observed variables, namely plants, number of leaf midribs, length of rachis, plant diameter, SPAD value, number of spores, and root colonization. There was 3 genus of spores, namely Acaulospora sp., Gigaspora sp., and Glomus sp., as well as 2 types of root infections in the form of hyphae and vesicles.

Abstract

Combo nursery technique is a technique where seedlings/cuttings of Shorea leprosula, Gliricidia sepium, and Brachiaria decumbens grass were planted in one polybag to support mining reclamation. To reduce competition effects among the three species, optimum media and size of polybag need to be investigated. The objective of this experiment is to analyse the effect of size of polybag and media composition on the growth of S. leprosula, G. sepium, and B. decumbens grass in the combo nursery technique. The experiment used Randomised Complete Design in Factorial with two factors, i.e. media compositions (soil : compost (2 : 1, v/v), (1 : 1, v/v), (1 : 2, v/v), and soil : compost : rice husk (7:3:1, v/v/v); and size of polybag (15 x 20 cm, 20 x 20 cm, dan 25 x 25 cm). Each treatment had four replications, and each replication consisted of four polybags. The results showed no significant interaction effects between the composition of media and the size of polybag; however, media compositions of soil: compost (1:1) and (1:2), and the sizes of polybag 20 x 20 cm and 25 x 25 cm significantly eliminated competition and significantly increased the growth of S. leprosula and the number of tiller of B. decumbens grass. Keywords: Brachiaria decumbens, Gliricidia sepium, mining reclamation, nursery, Shorea leprosula

Abstract

Essential oil which is contained on most trees is one of the promising Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) that need to be explored and developed further, for the oil is relatively safe and stores major benefits for local people. There are around 9 -12 types of essential oil that is being developed and one of them is cananga oil, which is available through distillation process of the flowers. The research aims to investigate the ability of cananga to be propagated trough shoot cuttings method, to discover the effects of growing media and plant growth regulators toward the shoot cuttings’ growth and to determine the suitable growth media and plant growth regulators for the cuttings’ development. The collected data were survival rate in percentage, root growth in percentage, height growth, numbers of developed leaf, numbers of developed primary and secondary roots, and also the length of primary roots. The addition of plant growth regulators gave a significant effect toward survival rate (in percentage), height growth and the numbers of developed leaf of the species whereas the addition of growing media and the interaction between the treatments did not give significant effect on the observed traits. All type of media options could be used for cananga shoot cuttings method and the best growth regulator identified in live percentage parameters, high growth and number of leaves on cananga shoot cutting is Rotoone-F. However, in case of rooting, the best growth regulator is found in addition of Rapid root. Keywords: Cuttings, Cananga, Media, Plant Gowth Regulator

Abstract

The application of silvopasture between the ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata forma enuine) plant and the signal grass (Brachiaria decumbens) has the potential to produce large economic value. The purpose of this study was to determine the response of ylang-ylang seedling growth to competition with grass signals without or with the addition of NPK, and to find out the optimal dose of NPK fertilizer that could help the growth of ylang-ylang seeds planted with grass signals. This study was conducted using a factorial pattern in a complete randomized design with the first factor being planting signal grass and the second factor was adding NPK fertilizer. The results of this study indicate that planting signal grass and adding NPK as much as 0,75 g significantly affected to the growth of ylang-ylang seedlings. The presence of signal grass in the same media showed no inhibition of the growth of ylang-ylang seedlings. The addition of NPK with the dose used did not significantly affect the growth of ylang-ylang seeds. Keywords: Brachiaria decumbens, Cananga odorata, NPK fertilizer dosage, silvopasture

Abstract

Drought and water logging stress are the most critical environmental factors that affect tree seedling survival and growth in the field. In this study, 12 populations of white jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb.) Bosser) were evaluated to determine the genetic variability among populations and correlation among morphophysiological seedling characters under drought and water logging stresses. Two research units were carried out by the randomized complete design with 2 x 12 factorial arrangements, i.e. (1) drought stress (2 treatments) and population (12 populations), and (2) water logging stress (2 treatments) and population (12 populations). Results showed that the responses of seedling traits were varied among populations under drought and waterlogging stresses. White Jabon seedling has higher adaptation to water logging stress than to drought stress. Kampar and Gowa populations have better adaptation to water logging stress. In drought stress, Gowa population had better adaptation followed by Nusa Kambangan population. Seedling height, total biomass and proline content characters based on value of broad sense heritability and correlation among characters, could be considered as important indicators for improvement programs for drought tolerance, while in the water logging stress, height, total biomass, root length and leaf area could be considered as important indicators for improvement program of white Jabon for tolerance on waterlogged sites.
