Abstract

Abstract

Purpose This study aims to analyze the effect of sharia financial inclusion on poverty in Aceh, the only province in Indonesia that mandates all financial institutions to operate based on Islamic principles yet has the highest poverty rate in Sumatra. Design/methodology/approach The study employs microdata from the 2023 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas), using a sample of 13,398 households across Aceh Province. A binary logistic regression model is applied to examine the relationship between access to sharia financial products and services including bank accounts, sharia financing, and digital financial services on household poverty status. Findings The findings reveal that households utilizing sharia financial products and services have lower odds of experiencing poverty than those without such access. However, the usage rate remains relatively low, particularly among rural households and those engaged in the agricultural sector, which serves as the primary livelihood for the majority of households in Aceh. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to formal financial inclusion indicators available in the Susenas dataset. Consequently, other dimensions of Islamic financial inclusion, including ZISWAF, are not captured. Future studies should incorporate these dimensions to provide a more comprehensive analysis. Originality/value This study contributes to the limited literature on the relationship between sharia financial inclusion and poverty, particularly studies employing household-level microdata.

Abstract

ASEAN is one of the actors in the world economy. With the launch of Forging Ahead Together, it is hoped that ASEAN can strengthen its economy and attract foreign investors to invest. The entry of large foreign investment into ASEAN is an opportunity for global investors. On the other hand, the factors that affect investment are from economic as well as non-economic. One important economic factor is banking costs because investment activities are inseparable from the presence of the financial sector which can cause costs and prices. Meanwhile, non-economic factors include institutional costs arising from the quality of a country's governance. This study uses a quantitative approach with panel regression analysis method to determine whether economic factors, namely bank costs or non-economic factors, affect the level of investment in ASEAN countries.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia play an essential role in religious education and community welfare, yet many face financial limitations that hinder their ability to provide basic facilities. Sustainable funding models are therefore needed to strengthen their operational resilience. Productive waqf offers a strategic mechanism to support essential services, including access to clean drinking water. This study analyzes the management of a waqf-funded drinking water filtration facility in an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design, data were gathered through observations, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the waqf asset is managed through clear planning, structured utilization, and regular monitoring, which improves operational efficiency and reduces costs. The filtration facility enhances students’ access to safe drinking water while demonstrating how productive waqf can support sustainable service provision. The study highlights the economic and managerial relevance of waqf-based initiatives for strengthening institutional sustainability in Islamic education.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia's demographic bonus provides an opportunity to expand digital waqf participation among Millennials and Generation Z through the Satuwakaf Indonesia application. Therefore, there are urgencies to analyse the behavior and preferences of Digital Waqf among Indonesian Youth. Method: This study employed a quantitative approach within a sequential explanatory mixed-method design. Data from 428 respondents were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), Multi-Group Analysis (PLS-SEM MGA), and robustness testing. Results: Attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, outcome satisfaction, expectation, and altruism significantly influenced digital waqf intention, whereas process satisfaction did not significantly affect expectation. Altruism also strengthened the relationships between TPB constructs and behavioral intention. Multi-group analysis indicated that the structural model was generally consistent across Millennials and Generation Z, with a significant difference only in the relationship between outcome satisfaction and expectation. Conclusion: Integrating TPB, ETAM, and altruism provides a comprehensive framework for explaining digital waqf adoption and offers practical guidance for improving digital waqf platforms and increasing youth participation.

Abstract

Productive waqf has emerged as a strategic instrument of Islamic philanthropy with significant potential for social and economic empowerment, yet its governance and management vary considerably across institutional and regulatory contexts. Based on the body of published academic literature, this study aims to analyze and compare the governance and implementation of productive waqf across ASEAN countries that are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and those that are not, in order to identify the institutional factors shaping its development. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with a meta-synthesis approach following the PRISMA protocol, analyzing 38 English- and Indonesian-language articles published between 2016 and 2025, retrieved from Scopus, ScienceDirect, and DOAJ, drawn from ASEAN OIC member states (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam) and non-OIC countries (Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia). OIC member states generally demonstrate more developed regulatory and institutional frameworks for waqf, though management quality varies considerably within this group. Non-OIC countries largely lack nationally standardized waqf institutionalization and remain predominantly consumptive in practice, with Singapore as a notable exception demonstrating professional, commercially integrated waqf management. These patterns suggest that OIC membership alone is not a sufficient predictor of waqf governance quality; country-specific institutional design remains the more decisive factor, as reflected in the substantial variation observed within both groups. As this study relies on secondary literature, its findings are constrained by the scope, depth, and availability of published sources, and do not capture primary field-level institutional practices. The density of publications is also uneven across some non-OIC countries; limited academic documentation in these contexts may understate the actual state of waqf practice rather than reflect its genuine absence. This study offers a cross-ASEAN comparative perspective rarely addressed in the waqf literature, distinguishing OIC from non-OIC institutional contexts and proposing a three-stage developmental framework, moving from policy legitimation to regulatory operationalization to governance optimization, for productive waqf development. Future research integrating empirical methods such as case studies to validate and extend these findings.
