Abstract

This study investigates the use of metaphorical euphemisms in Instagram comments related to Anies Baswedan, a prominent figure in Indonesian politics. The aim is to analyze how netizens use euphemisms to navigate sensitive political discourse in a digital context. Metaphorical euphemisms, defined as expressions that soften or reframe controversial or harsh topics, play a significant role in managing political expression. The research uses a qualitative content analysis approach to examine 15 Instagram comments, categorizing euphemisms into three types: analogy, distortion, and borrowing (Allan & Burridge, 2020). The findings reveal that distortion euphemisms were most common (46.67%), followed by analogy euphemisms (40%) and borrowing euphemisms (13.33%). Distortion euphemisms often reframed negative political situations in a more acceptable or humorous light, while analogy euphemisms employed vivid comparisons to communicate complex ideas in a relatable manner. Borrowing euphemisms utilized terms from other contexts to soften their meaning. The study emphasizes the importance of these linguistic strategies in fostering constructive dialogue while mitigating conflict in politically polarized environments. The findings contribute to understanding how euphemisms function in digital political communication, revealing the creativity of netizens in expressing their views. This research offers insights into the role of language in shaping public opinion and engagement in the digital age.

The integration of digital media in language learning has become increasingly important in modern education. This study explores the use of TikTok as a tool to assess and improve students' descriptive text writing skills in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The research was conducted with Class X students at SMA Sultan Iskandar Muda Medan, North Sumatra, using a Classroom Action Research approach. The study involved two cycles: the first without TikTok and the second incorporating TikTok as a learning medium. Data was collected through observations, tests, and assessments of students' written and oral presentations. Results showed a significant improvement in students' descriptive writing skills when using TikTok, with higher scores in content relevance, clarity of description, and overall engagement. The study found that TikTok provided an interactive and engaging platform for students to practice their descriptive writing skills in a real-world context. This research concludes that incorporating TikTok in EFL classrooms can effectively enhance students' descriptive writing abilities and increase their motivation to learn English. The findings suggest that integrating social media platforms like TikTok can be a valuable strategy for language educators seeking to improve students' writing skills in a digital age.

The research method employed was quasi-experimental with a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. This research involved three schools, with each school having an experimental class and a control class. The independent sample t-test was performed to determine the differences in the average HOTS results of students in each class at each school. The results of the data analysis showed that there was a difference in the average HOTS of students between those who used the integrated physics worksheets in bilingual classes and the worksheets found in schools. The differences in the increased HOTS indicated that the physics worksheets in bilingual classes were effectively used.

Abstract

Self-Translated Academic Writing Practice is a bridge or instrument for improved classroom communication. However, only some studies have examined how students incorporate translation into their foreign language writing. The purpose of the present study was to investigate how students engage in translation practice while writing in the classroom. To determine if there were any issues with the writing and translation practices, a brief exploration of experiences was conducted in class. Additionally, the correlation between translation activity and writing was investigated. The participant reported that these issues resulted from her limited vocabulary match due to the English text's readability. The translation procedure improves their English composition skills. According to the study results, more information is required about how self-translation operates in academic contexts; we need to learn more about the situations in which students self-translate when writing academic papers.
