Abstract

Metarhizium anisopliae is a fungus that acts as an entomopathogen, commonly used to control pest insects (Biological Control Agent). This saprophytic mushroom requires sufficient organic nutrients in the growth medium. Typically, rice or corn is used as the media; however, this poses a challenge as these grains are also consumed by humans as staple foods. Additionally, the price of rice and corn has been increasing steadily. Alternatively, organic materials like maggot residue and pupa shells are byproducts from maggot cultivation that contain high nutritional value but are not utilized optimally. This research aims to identify effective alternative media for the multiplication of Metarhizium anisopliae. The research method involved controlled, homogeneous, and sterile experimental conditions, using a completely randomized design with four treatments and six repetitions. The fungus showed a high conidia density in the control media (rice corn), measuring 15.5 x 108. In chicken manure, a high density of 14.4 x 108 was observed, while the media made from maggot residue and pupa shells showed very low densities of 2.08 x 106 and 6.25 x 106, respectively. This suggests the presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMP), fatty acids, various bacteria, and lignocellulose compounds in the maggot residue and pupa shells. Overall, the organic materials from maggot residue and pupa shells are not effective as growth mediums for the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) productivity is frequently limited by pest and disease pressure linked to reduced plant resistance from poor soil conditions and micronutrient deficiencies. This study evaluated whether different mulches mitigate disease incidence and improve growth and yield. Objectives were to quantify mulch effects on disease intensity, soil properties, vegetative growth, and fruit yield. A field experiment used a randomized block design with five treatments (P0 = no mulch; P1 = plastic; P2 = baglog; P3 = leaf litter; P4 = rice straw) and five replications. Measured variables included soil pH and moisture, pest population, pest attack intensity (%), disease attack intensity (%), and plant growth and productivity. Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Duncen further test (α = 0.05). Results showed that organic mulches reduced disease incidence to 17.2–19.2% versus 28.6% in the no-mulch control. Rice straw and leaf litter significantly improved soil pH and moisture retention; baglog and straw mulches increased branch number and further lowered disease incidence; plastic mulch produced the highest fruit weight per plant. In conclusion, organic mulches particularly rice straw and leaf litter enhance soil conditions and plant resilience, reducing disease and supporting productivity, while plastic mulch maximizes individual-plant yield.

Abstract

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) are a vital biological agent in integrated pest management, yet maintaining their quality during storage remains a technical challenge . Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various storage media and temperature regimes in preserving the viability and virulence of EPN . Methods: A completely randomized factorial design was employed to test three storage media (active sodium alginate, passive polyurethane sponge, and water control) under two temperature conditions (15°C and 27°C) . Results: The study revealed that water media at 15°C (F0T1) maintained the highest viability, whereas sodium alginate at 15°C (F1T1) demonstrated superior retention of virulence by the fourth week . Conclusion: Low-temperature storage is critical for EPN survival, while active media formulations like sodium alginate offer significant advantages in preserving nematode pathogenicity for longer durations compared to passive media.

Abstract

The fruit fly Bactrocera spp. is the main pest other than Thrips in red chilies, which can reduce plant productivity by 30-60%, so that a specific method of handling this pest is needed. This study examines the application of conventional and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to fruit fly populations in red chili cultivation (Capsicum annuum). Observation of fruit fly population used the comparative method with methyl eugenol traps and incubation of infected fruit. Determination of the research sample based on purposive sampling method and analyzed using descriptive analysis. The test parameters were the fruit fly population indicated by the host's density and hosts' availability in the applied IPM and conventional treatments. The results showed that the fruit fly species encountered were dominated by B. dorsalis with a percentage of 98.18% and B. carambola 1.82%. The fruit fly population's fluctuation in IPM and conventional treatments were significantly different, as evidenced by a one-way variance test at a significance level of 99%. The population of fruit flies in the IPM concept was 547 flies, while the conventional concept was 1546 flies. The percentage of fruit fly population in red chili plants with IPM treatment was 48% smaller than conventional treatments. Keywords: Bactrocera spp., IPM, Population, Red chilies.

Abstract

The fig plant is cultivated for its fruit due to its high economic value. Vegetative propagation can serve as an alternative for mass propagation of fig plants, such as grafting. Vegetative propagation of figs is conducted in several ways, including grafting and cuttings. The problems encountered in grafting are mainly caused by unsuitable media conditions. This research aims to determine the best composition of grafting media for fig plants. The study was conducted in Dwiwangsa Tin Garden Park, Sidomulyo Village, Krian District, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. Rainfall at the research site was classified as dry season, with 0 mm in October 2023, 7 mm in November 2023, 150 mm in December 2023, 211 mm in January 2024, and 485 mm in February 2024. The research employed a randomized block design (RBD) consisting of nine media combination treatments. The treatments included soil medium, husk medium, husk charcoal medium, cocopeat medium, sawdust sewing powder medium, a combination of soil and husk medium (1:1), a combination of soil and charcoal husk medium (1:1), a combination of  soil and cocopeat medium (1:1), and a combination of soil and sawdust medium (1:1). Each grafting medium showed a different growth response in terms of root number. Based on the results, the husk charcoal medium produced the highest values, with 89.8 roots, root length of 7.24 cm, root diameter of 1.38 cm, root fresh weight of 5.22 g, root volume of 7.7 ml, and root dry weight of 0.37 g.
